Abstract
We assessed lifespan development of multitasking in a sample of 187 individuals aged 8-82 years. Participants performed a visuo-spatial working memory (VSWM) task together with either postural control or reaction time (RT) tasks. Using criterion-referenced testing we individually adjusted difficulty levels for the VSWM task to control for single-task differences. Age-differences in single-task performances followed U-shaped patterns with young adults outperforming children and older adults. Multitasking manipulations yielded robust performance decrements in VSWM, postural control and RT tasks. Presumably due to our adjustment of VSWM challenges, costs in this task were small and similar across age groups suggesting that age-differential costs found in earlier studies largely reflected differences already present during single-task performance. Age-differences in multitasking costs for concurrent tasks depended on specific combinations. For VSWM and RT task combinations increases in RT were the smallest for children but pronounced in adults highlighting the role of cognitive control processes. Stabilogram diffusion analysis of postural control demonstrated that long-term control mechanisms were affected by concurrent VSWM demands. This interference was pronounced in older adults supporting concepts of compensation or increased cognitive involvement in sensorimotor processes at older age. Our study demonstrates how a lifespan approach can delineate the explanatory scope of models of human multitasking.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aims of this scoping review are to examine the available literature regarding dual tasking in children with cerebral palsy (CP) and to identify and categorize both the motor and cognitive tasks and outcome measures used primarily through the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health model. METHODS Five electronic databases were searched. Studies were included if they: (1) were published in English; (2) included at least 1 group of children or adolescents with a diagnosis of CP; (3) assessed dual tasking as part of the study; (4) reported the method for performing the dual task; and (5) reported the outcome measures utilized. RESULTS Twenty-three studies with 439 children with CP were included. All studies utilized motor activities as the primary task, including walking, balance, and a functional transition. Motor secondary tasks occurred in 10 studies, cognitive secondary tasks in 12 studies, and 1 study used both. Forty-one outcome measures over 23 studies assessed the body structure and function domain, 7 measures over 6 studies assessed activity limitations, and 2 outcomes over 2 studies assessed participation. CONCLUSION The 23 included studies demonstrated heterogeneity in the age and function of participants, secondary tasks, and outcome measures. Future studies on dual tasking in children with CP should consider the difficulty of the primary motor or cognitive task and compare secondary tasks to establish this contribution to motor performance. Studies should incorporate activity and participation measures to assess meaningful functional outcomes. IMPACT Children with CP experience challenges when exposed to dual task situations. This scoping review highlights the importance of considering multiple factors when designing dual tasking studies involving children with CP to facilitate results translation, improved participation, and enhanced function. Similarly, studies should utilize activity and participation outcomes to assess quality of life.

Abstract
Many techniques have attempted to provide physical support to ease the execution of a typing task by individuals with developmental disabilities (DD). These techniques have been controversial due to concerns that the support provider's touch can influence the typed content. The most common interpretation of assisted typing as an ideomotor phenomenon has been qualified recently by studies showing that users with DD make identifiable contributions to the process. This paper suggests a neurophysiological pathway by which touch could lower the cognitive load of seated typing by people with DD. The required sensorimotor processes (stabilizing posture and planning and executing manual reaching movements) and cognitive operations (generating and transcribing linguistic material) place concurrent demands on cognitive resources, particularly executive function (EF). A range of developmental disabilities are characterized by deficits in sensorimotor and EF capacity. As light touch has been shown to facilitate postural coordination, it is proposed that a facilitator's touch could assist the seated typist with sensorimotor and EF deficits by reducing their sensorimotor workload and thereby freeing up shared cognitive resources for the linguistic elements of the task. This is the first theoretical framework for understanding how a facilitator's touch may assist individuals with DD to contribute linguistic content during touch-assisted typing.

Abstract
Objective At present, there are controversies on the effectiveness of functional electrical stimulation devices in gait improvement in the clinic, and the results reported in limited literature are contradictory. This paper summarizes and analyzes the relationship between functional electrical stimulation treatment and gait parameter changes in children with cerebral palsy, thus exploring the above controversies' results. Methods Two researchers conducted a detailed search of the literature from the establishment of the database to June 2022. Literature retrieved from databases, including PubMed, Embase, Ovid, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science and the search process followed the principles of Cochrane. The search keywords were “cerebral palsy”, “functional electrical stimulation”, “gait”, or “walk”. Gait and balance parameters were extracted from the literature. Gait parameters, such as walking speed and step length, were included in the meta-analysis. The study used standard mean difference (STD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) to calculate the mean difference between the two groups. The statistic I2 was used to evaluate the heterogeneity between the evaluation studies. Begg's test detected publication bias and the funnel chart was used for visual analysis. Furthermore, Review Manager software was used to make a risk bias map for literature publication bias analysis. Results 9 literatures were included in the analysis, with a total of 282 children with cerebral palsy, including 142 patients in the functional electrical stimulation treatment group and 140 patients in the comfort treatment, general nursing, or other physical therapy. The randomization scheme and result report used in most studies were low risk, which was important for the credibility of this study. Most studies have limitations in the blinding method of participants and subjects, and most of them were single-blind studies, which might have a high risk. The results showed that functional electrical stimulation could increase the walking speed of children with cerebral palsy (SMD = 0.82, P < 0.0001) and increase the walking step length of children with cerebral palsy (SMD = 1.34, 95%CI = 1.07, 1.60, Z = 9.91, P < 0.0001). Funnel plot analysis showed that the literature distribution was uniform and symmetrical, and Begg's test showed no publication bias in included literature. Conclusion This study compared the effects of the functional nerve stimulation treatment group and control group on improving gait parameters of children with cerebral palsy. The results indicated that functional nerve stimulation treatment could increase the gait speed and step length of children with cerebral palsy, which could improve the walking of children with cerebral palsy. Furthermore, this study needs more research data to support our findings. The results of this study might better guide the clinical practice and better use of health as well as financial resources.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to compare the dual-task (DT) performance in blind children with sighted ones while concurrently performing a motor task (upright standing) with cognitive (Letter fluency (LF) or Category fluency (CF)) tasks. The Center of pressure mean velocity (CoPVm) and the cognitive performances were recorded during single (ST) and DT conditions. Results showed that, for both groups, CoPVm values increased significantly (p < 0.05) in the DT compared to ST condition. The CoPVm values were significantly (p < 0.001) higher in blind children, compared to controls only in the DT-CF condition. In conclusion, balance performance of blind and typically developed children is affected by dual tasking. Interference between motor and cognitive tasks has more pronounced effects on balance performance in blind children, compared to controls. This difference was observed only when performing the CF task concurrently with the postural balance task.

Abstract
The objective of this exploratory randomized controlled trial (RCT) was to provide evidence for the feasibility and therapeutic value of a novel game-based dual-task balance exercise program in children with cerebral palsy (CP). Twenty children with CP were recruited and randomized into two groups: (a) the conventional balance training group (CG) and (b) the experimental group (XG), which received a game-based dual-task (DT) balance exercise program. Both groups received their respective therapy programs for 12 weeks at a frequency of three sessions per week. Semi-structured interviews with the parents and children and qualitative analysis were conducted to evaluate the children's experiences with the game-based exercise program. The quantitative analysis included (a) the Pediatric Balance Scale (PBS), (b) Gross Motor Function Measure-88 (GMFM-88), and (c) computerized measures of standing balance performance during various dual-task conditions. Compliance was 100% for all 20 participants. Four themes captured the range of each participant's experiences and opinions: (a) reasons for participation, (b) likes and dislikes with the technologies, (c) positive effects of the program, and (d) future expectations. Children in the XG demonstrated greater improvements in PBS, GMFM, and DT balance measures as compared to children in the CG. The findings demonstrate feasible trial procedures and acceptable DT-oriented training with a high compliance rate and positive outcomes. These findings support further research and development and progression to the next phase of a full-scale RCT to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of the game-based DT balance exercise program for children with CP.

Abstract
Gait is generally considered an automated process with little or no cognitive input. In most individuals with Cerebral Palsy (CP), walking restrictions may accompany during childhood and adolescence. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of dual task on Gait Velocity (GV) and Cadence (C) in Cerebral Palsied Children with Spastic Hemiparesis or Diparesis (CPCSHD). Fourteen boys, seven girls' spastic hemiparesis children (mean age: 13.33 ± 3.79 years) and twelve girls, nine boys' diparesis children (mean age: 14.44 ± 3.24 years) were included in the study. Forty-two CPCSHD having level 1 or 2 according to the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) were included in this comparative study. GV was calculated using a chronometer for a 10-m walk on the ground with shoes. Cadence was calculated accounting the number of steps during 1-min walk. Both GV and C tests were performed by each participant with single task first. After the single task, all were asked to perform the dual task carrying a plastic water-filled bottle. There were no significant differences between the hemiparesis and diparesis in terms of demographics data. When children with hemiparesis and diparesis compare each other, no significant differences were found in terms of all the outcome parameters. The results obtained from this study indicate that walking speed and cadence decrease during a dual motor task in CPCSHD (p > 0.05). When hemiparesis and diparesis groups were compared, no difference was found between the groups.

Abstract
There is limited evidence about gait stability and its alteration by concurrent motor and cognitive tasks in children with cerebral palsy (CP). We examined gait stability and how it is altered by constrained cognitive or motor task in CP and their typically developed (TD) controls. Gait kinematics were recorded using inertial-measurement units (IMU) from 18 patients with hemiplegia (13.5 ± 2.4 years), 12 with diplegia (13.0 ± 2.1 years), and 31 TD controls (13.5 ± 2.2 years) during unconstrained gait, and motor (carrying a tray) and cognitive (word naming) task constrained gait at preferred speed (~400 steps/task). Step duration, its standard deviation and refined-compound-multiscale entropy (RCME) were computed independently for vertical and resultant horizontal accelerations. Gait complexity was higher for patients with CP than TD in all tasks and directions (p < 0.001-0.01), being pronounced in vertical direction, cognitive task and for diplegic patients (p < 0.05-0.001). The gait complexity increased more (i.e. higher dual-task cost) from the unconstrained to the constrained gait in CP compared to TD (p < 0.05). Step duration was similar in all groups (p > 0.586), but its variation was higher in CP than TD (p < 0.001-0.05), and during the constrained than unconstrained gait in all groups (p < 0.01-0.001). The gait in children with CP was more complex and the dual-task cost was higher primarily for children with diplegic CP than TD during cognitive task, indicating that attentional load hinders their gait more. This raises the hypothesis that more attention and cortical resources are needed to compensate for the impaired gait in children with CP.

Abstract
Dual-task conditions are commonly experienced in daily routines. The aim of the present systematic review is to investigate the effect of dual-task conditions on gait and balance performance in children with cerebral palsy (CP) and to perform meta-analyses where applicable. Five databases, "ProQuest", "PubMed", "OTSeeker", "Scopus", and "PEDro" from the incipient date of databases up to Aug 24, 2020 were searched for studies focusing on the effects of dual-task conditions on gait and balance performance in children with CP. After removing irrelevant articles and applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, nine articles were included in the present systematic review and meta-analysis. The results of the meta-analysis showed that walking speed was slower during dual-task conditions compared to single-task conditions in children with CP (WMD = -0.29 m/s, 95% CI = -0.34, -0.24, P ≤ 0.001) and walking speed decreased in children with CP during dual-task conditions in comparison with the typical development (TD) control group (WMD = -0.19 m/s, 95% CI = -0.23 to -0.15, P ≤ 0.001). The results of subgroup analysis based on the type of task indicated that adding concurrent tasks to walking degrades walking speed under varied dual-task conditions. Additionally, theoretical synthesis of the literature demonstrated that other gait and balance variables are changed by performing cognitive and motor secondary tasks differently. Although these changes may be compensatory strategies to retain their stability, there was not sufficient evidence to reach a firm conclusion. Research gaps and recommendations for future studies are discussed.

Abstract
AIM Youth with cerebral palsy generally participate in less physical activity than typically developing peers. In adults with physical disabilities, balance confidence is a strong predictor of participation and community re-integration. However, balance confidence has not been studied in youth with cerebral palsy. METHOD Qualitative descriptive methodology with interviews of eight youth with cerebral palsy (9-17 years old, three girls) in Gross Motor Function Classification System Levels I-III, and eight parents (five mothers) of youth with cerebral palsy (9-17 years old, two girls) in Levels I-III. RESULTS Three themes arose: (1) youth in Gross Motor Function Classification System Levels I-II are more concerned about losing their balance during physical activities than those in Level III; (2) when balance is lost, embarrassment and frustration are more common than fear, especially for those in Levels I-II; and (3) social factors can create a favorable participation environment when balance confidence is low, especially for youth in Levels I-II. CONCLUSION Balance confidence may have greater influence on physical activity participation for youth in Gross Motor Function Classification System Levels I-II than those in Level III. Youth in Levels I-II may draw greater benefit from interventions targeting balance confidence when addressing physical activity goals.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONBalance confidence may have a greater influence on activity avoidance for youth with cerebral palsy in Gross Motor Function Classification System Levels I and II (who are independently ambulatory without walkers or cane(s)) than for those in Level II (who use walkers or cane(s) to ambulate).Youth who are independently ambulatory without walkers or cane(s) may benefit more from interventions directed at balance confidence (e.g., enactive mastery and verbal persuasion) to address their physical activity participation goals.For youth who are independently ambulatory without walkers or cane(s), addressing factors that could reduce the influence of balance confidence on physical activity participation, such as providing a positive and supportive social environment in which to participate, may be beneficial.
