Abstract
In this study, we aimed to understand the effects of changes in temperature on biochemical and molecular responses associated with the antioxidant defense system in the bay scallop, Argopecten irradians. We measured the contents of H2O2 and malondialdehyde (MDA), as well as the activities of antioxidant enzymes (e.g., glutathione S-transferase [GST], superoxide dismutase [SOD], and catalase [CAT]), and the regulation of stress-related genes (e.g., GST, SOD, CAT, and heat shock protein 70 [HSP70]). In addition, total antioxidant capacity (TAC) was examined in scallops exposed to different temperatures. A. irradians showed high levels of H2O2 and MDA in response to acute thermal stress (48 and 72 h of exposure). Temperature changes also led to a significant increase in antioxidant enzyme activity and mRNA expression levels in A. irradians. Interestingly, the TAC increased in response to acute thermal stress (28 °C) for up to 12 h and decreased thereafter. The oxidative stress induced by high temperatures could not be alleviated by an increase in levels of antioxidant enzymes, such as GST, SOD, and CAT, resulting in high levels of H2O2 and MDA and low levels of TAC. In addition, significant changes (P < 0.05) in HSP70 levels were observed in response to changes in temperature, suggesting that HSP70 played an important role in the heat tolerance of A. irradians. In conclusion, A. irradians exhibits a greater degree of oxidative stress responses in high-temperature environments than that in low-temperature environments. Overall, these findings indicate that temperature changes lead to oxidative stress, resulting in cellular damage and activation of the antioxidant defense system in bay scallops. Further experiments are required to elucidate other antioxidants and fully understand the redox system in A. irradians.

Abstract
Liver fluke infections are recognised as diseases with worldwide distribution and considerable veterinary and public health importance. The giant liver fluke, Fascioloides magna, is an important non-native parasite which has been introduced to Europe, posing a threat to the survival of local wildlife populations such as red deer (Cervus elaphus). The aim of the study was to analyse differences in liver proteomes between F. magna-infected and control red deer groups using a label-based high-throughput quantitative proteomics approach. The proteomics analysis identified 234 proteins with differential abundance between the control and infected groups. Our findings showed that F. magna infection in this definitive host is associated with changes in the metabolism of proteins and fatty acids, oxidative stress, fibrosis, and signaling pathways. The identified proteins and associated biological pathways represent a valuable contribution to the understanding of host-parasite interactions and the pathogenesis of liver fluke infection.

Abstract
Dyslipidemia is one of the risk factors of cardiovascular disease, which is the main cause of mortality worldwide. Meanwhile, lipid-lowering drug side-effects may also occur. Thus, consumption of vegetables and fruits containing probiotics is a good alternative to influence the lipid profile in plasma. This study investigated the effect of consuming vegetable and fruit juice (VFJ) with (probiotic group) and without probiotic Lactobacillus paracasei (placebo group), on the body weight, body mass index, waist circumference, lipid profile, lipid peroxidation, oxidative stress enzymes, and bile acid level in dyslipidemic patients (n = 20) at Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital for 30 days. The levels of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglyceride (TG), and TG/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio in the probiotic group were significantly lower than those in the placebo group. The HDL-C concentration in the probiotic group was higher than that in the placebo group. The probiotic group showed significantly decreased malondialdehyde levels; increased oxidative stress enzymes, catalase and glutathione peroxidase in the plasma; and increased bile acid (BA) levels in the feces. Therefore, the findings of this study demonstrate that VFJ enriched with probiotic L. paracasei may represent an alternative method for the prevention of dyslipidemia during the primary intervention stage for patients who are not yet taking other medication.

Abstract
Fasciolosis caused by the liver flukes Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica is one of the most important neglected parasitic diseases of humans and animals. The ability of the parasites to infect and multiply in their intermediate snail hosts, and their adaptation to a wide variety of mammalian definitive hosts contribute to their high transmissibility and distribution. Within the mammalian host, the trauma caused by the immature flukes burrowing through the liver parenchyma is associated with most of the pathogenesis. Similarly, the feeding activity and the physical presence of large flukes in the bile ducts can lead to anemia, inflammation, obstruction and cholangitis. The high frequency of non-synonymous polymorphisms found in Fasciola spp. genes allows for adaptation and invasion of a broad range of hosts. This is also facilitated by parasite’s excretory-secretory (ES) molecules that mediate physiological changes that allows their establishment within the host. ES contains cathepsin peptidases that aid parasite invasion by degrading collagen and fibronectin. In the bile ducts, cathepsin-L is critical to hemoglobin digestion during feeding activities. Other molecules (peroxiredoxin, cathepsin-L and Kunitz-type inhibitor) stimulate a strong immune response polarized toward a Treg/Th2 phenotype that favors fluke’s survival. Helminth defense molecule, fatty acid binding proteins, Fasciola-specific glycans and miRNAs modulate host pro-inflammatory responses, while antioxidant scavenger enzymes work in an orchestrated way to deter host oxidant-mediated damage. Combining these strategies Fasciola spp. survive for decades within their mammalian host, where they reproduce and spread to become one of the most widespread zoonotic worm parasites in the world.

Abstract
Liver fluke, Fascioloides magna, is an important non-native parasite introduced to Europe, posing a threat to survival of local wildlife populations. The aim of this study was to assess the serum and liver protein profile of control and F. magna infected wild boars, by means of shotgun tandem mass tag - based quantitative high resolution proteomics approach. In serum, 4 differentially abundant proteins were found out of total 1073 identified, while in liver from 3520 identified proteins, 116 were differentially abundant between healthy and F. magna infected wild boars. Pathway analysis revealed that most of the proteins differing in abundance are involved in metabolism, biological oxidations, cellular responses to stimuli, fatty acid metabolism, and others. Validation of proteomic results was performed for paraoxonase-1, ceruloplasmin, glutathione S-transferase and liver enzymes by ELISA and automated assays. Complementary analysis of liver and serum in F. magna infection enabled insight into changes of proteome profile of the host at local and sistemic level. Our findings showed that chronic infection with F. magna is associated with immune response in host, oxidative stress and metabolomic changes in liver. SIGNIFICANCE: Liver fluke infections are recognised as worldwide neglected diseases with considerable veterinary and public health importance. Pathological changes, clinical signs and outcome of F. magna infection are strongly related to the type of final hosts and their different tolerance to infection. In order to gain insight into host-parasite interactions in wild boars, dead-end host for F. magna, we assessed proteomics profile of serum and liver of control animals and those infected with F. magna. Proteomics analysis of serum and liver in parallel showed as advantageous and beneficial, demonstrating protein alterations mainly at local level. Bioinformatics analysis enabled elucidation of molecular pathways associated with F. magna infection. Identification and validation of proteins associated with infection may have added value to current tools for efficient liver fluke control.

Abstract
Background The major pathogenesis associated with Fasciola hepatica infection results from the extensive tissue damage caused by the tunnelling and feeding activity of immature flukes during their migration, growth and development in the liver. This is compounded by the pathology caused by host innate and adaptive immune responses that struggle to simultaneously counter infection and repair tissue damage. Results Complementary transcriptomic and proteomic approaches defined the F. hepatica factors associated with their migration in the liver, and the resulting immune-pathogenesis. Immature liver-stage flukes express ~ 8000 transcripts that are enriched for transcription and translation processes reflective of intensive protein production and signal transduction pathways. Key pathways that regulate neoblast/pluripotent cells, including the PI3K-Akt signalling pathway, are particularly dominant and emphasise the importance of neoblast-like cells for the parasite’s rapid development. The liver-stage parasites display different secretome profiles, reflecting their distinct niche within the host, and supports the view that cathepsin peptidases, cathepsin peptidase inhibitors, saposins and leucine aminopeptidases play a central role in the parasite’s destructive migration, and digestion of host tissue and blood. Immature flukes are also primed for countering immune attack by secreting immunomodulating fatty acid binding proteins (FABP) and helminth defence molecules (FhHDM). Combined with published host microarray data, our results suggest that considerable immune cell infiltration and subsequent fibrosis of the liver tissue exacerbates oxidative stress within parenchyma that compels the expression of a range of antioxidant molecules within both host and parasite. Conclusions The migration of immature F. hepatica parasites within the liver is associated with an increase in protein production, expression of signalling pathways and neoblast proliferation that drive their rapid growth and development. The secretion of a defined set of molecules, particularly cathepsin L peptidases, peptidase-inhibitors, saponins, immune-regulators and antioxidants allow the parasite to negotiate the liver micro-environment, immune attack and increasing levels of oxidative stress. This data contributes to the growing F. hepatica -omics information that can be exploited to understand parasite development more fully and for the design of novel control strategies to prevent host liver tissue destruction and pathology.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica are two commonly reported liver flukes that cause fascioliasis in ruminants. Among the members of the genus Fasciola, F. hepatica was identified in the study area. Fascioliasis is a major disease that affects the production of livestock by causing liver damage. F. hepatica has developed advanced mechanisms to trick, elude, and alter the host immune response, similar to an extrinsic stressor. These mechanisms consequently affect the animals' physiological and metabolic functions in vivo and postmortem changes, which have significant influences on animal welfare and meat quality development. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the current prevalence of cattle fascioliasis at abattoirs in El-Kharga city, New Valley Governorate, Egypt, and to investigate the changes in serum biochemical and immunological parameters and oxidative stress factors due to Fasciola spp. infection in terms of meat quality and immune response. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 226 cattle were inspected for the presence of Fasciola spp. The liver of each cattle was examined by making several incisions for detecting adult Fasciola spp. in El- Kharga. The blood samples were collected to analyze the changes in serum biochemical and immunological parameters and oxidative stress factors. RESULTS Of the 226 cattle, 38 (16.81%) were positive for F. hepatica at the postmortem examination. Cattle infected with F. hepatica had highly elevated serum alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, glutamate dehydrogenase, γ-glutamyl transferase, urea, and creatinine levels. Immunological cytokine profiles showed significantly increased serum interleukin (IL)-4, IL-10, and transforming growth factor-beta levels and a significantly decreased interferon-γ level. Furthermore, oxidative stress profiles showed significantly increased serum malondialdehyde and nitric oxide levels and significantly decreased total antioxidant capacity and reduced glutathione level. CONCLUSION This study demonstrated that F. hepatica infection alone is an oxidative stress factor that affects slaughtered animals, leading to biochemical and metabolic alterations in the early postmortem period.

Abstract
The aim of our study was to investigate parameters of oxidative/antioxidative status in rats experimentally infected with Fasciola hepatica and treated with a copper salt. The experiment was carried out on 24 male Wistar albino rats, divided into 4 groups with 6 animals in each: group 1 – healthy untreated animals, group 2 – rats orally infected with F. hepatica; group 3 – rats treated with CuSO4. 5H2O and group 4 – rats experimentally infected with F. hepatica and treated with CuSO4.5H2O. Rats from group 2 and 4 were orally infected with 15 viable F. hepatica metacercariae per animal. Rats from group 3 and 4 received CuSO4.5H2O dissolved in drinking water at a dose of 150 mg/kg body weight after post infestation week 2. Copper administration lasted 2 weeks. The rats were euthanised on the 35th day post infestation. The levels of malondialdehyde, glutathione, and the activity of Cu, Zn-superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase in the liver of all rats were established. Increased liver MDA level was observed in groups infected and untreated with copper compared to control level. Reduced Cu,Zn-SOD activity was found in all infected rats as well as insignificant increase of the enzyme in group 3 compared to control group value. GPx activity was reduced in similar manner in the treated and infected groups compared to the control group. GSH level was lower in all treated rats than in controls (P<0.01). Copper liver content was increased in groups receiving CuSO4.5H2O compared both to control and infected only group. Substantial imbalance in oxidative/antioxidative status in groups 2, 3 and 4 was demonstrated compared to the control group. Combined effect of chronic copper administration and experimental F. hepatica infection increased significantly MDA level, reduced the activity of Cu,Zn-SOD and the GSH content in host livers. Elevated copper level influenced defense system in F. hepatica infected rats at a high extent. Parasites and copper acted together to increase the oxidative stress. Parasitism in the presence of copper pollution compromises the health of the host, even at low intensities.

Abstract
The current study investigated the antidiabetic property of Lactobacillus fermentum HP3–mediated fermented Hericium erinaceus juice (FHJ) using male Wistar rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus (DM). FHJ was prepared using boiled mushroom juice and L. fermentum HP3. Amino acid and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) content of FHJ was analyzed. Streptozotocin-induced DM rats were supplemented with FHJ in a pre- and posttreatment method. The changes in plasma insulin, plasma glucose level, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), representative cytokines, and the antioxidant system were assessed in experimental rats using spectrophotometric methods and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The supplementation of FHJ improved the body mass, insulin level, and recovery progress of hyperglycemia. HbA1c level was altered by the FHJ intervention. The inflammatory cytokines level was suppressed in FHJ supplemented group compared with control. Intervention of FHJ and insulin improved the production of interleukin-10 and transforming growth factor-–β1 in DM rat. The study suggested that fermented H erinaceus juice may be used as one of the food-based health-promoting supplement to manage DM along with medication.

Abstract
Insulin is able to form amyloid-like fibrils, a misfolding process by which insulin molecules interact with each other to form aggregates and pathological amyloid deposition. Inhibition of amyloid aggregation using natural products is proposed as a new strategy to prohibit the development of amyloid diseases. Herein, we demonstrated the inhibitory effect of cyanidin-3-rutinoside (C3R), a natural anthocyanin with multiple biological activities, against insulin amyloid fibrillation. The results showed that increased insulin concentration resulted in faster growth and higher amounts of insulin fibrils. C3R (10.6-170μM) concentration dependently decreased insulin fibril growth and increased the duration of lag time of insulin fibril formation. Moreover, C3R directly decreased the secondary structure transition from α-helix to β-sheet structure. C3R (0.31-5μM) attenuated insulin fibrils-induced oxidative hemolysis of human erythrocytes in a concentration-dependent manner. Moreover, C3R reduced insulin fibrils-induced erythrocyte membrane disruption through the inhibition of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. The findings also suggest that C3R reduced fibrils-induced membrane lipid peroxidation by maintaining the catalase activity and oxidized/reduced glutathione content (GSH/GSSH) in erythrocytes. These findings suggest that C3R may serve as a potential inhibitory agent against amyloid fibril formation and insulin fibrils-induced oxidative hemolysis.

Abstract
Oxidative stress occurs in diabetes, various cancers, liver diseases, stroke, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic inflammation, and other degenerative diseases related to the nervous system. The free radicals have deleterious effect on various organs of the body. This is due to lipid peroxidation and irreversible protein modification that leads to cellular apoptosis or programmed cell death. During recent years, there is a rise in the oral diseases related to oxidative stress. Oxidative stress in oral disease is related to other systemic diseases in the body such as periodontitis, cardiovascular, pancreatic, gastric, and liver diseases. In the present review, we discuss the various pathways that mediate oxidative cellular damage. Numerous pathways mediate oxidative cellular damage and these include caspase pathway, PERK/NRF2 pathway, NADPH oxidase 4 pathways and JNK/mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase pathway. We also discuss the role of inflammatory markers, lipid peroxidation, and role of oxygen species linked to oxidative stress. Knowledge of different pathways, role of inflammatory markers, and importance of low-density lipoprotein, fibrinogen, creatinine, nitric oxide, nitrates, and highly sensitive C-reactive proteins may be helpful in understanding the pathogenesis and plan better treatment for oral diseases which involve oxidative stress.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the oxidative status in Egyptian patients suffering chronic fascioliasis. The relationship between serum malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) activities was investigated in relation to the level of liver enzymes; ALT and AST compared to healthy controls. Twenty patients versus ten controls were included in the study. Among cases the MDA, CAT, AST and ALT were higher than controls, while SOD and GPX higher values were present among controls. There was a highly significant difference between cases and controls as regard MDA, CAT, SOD, GPX, and AST, and a significant difference regarding ALT. The findings of increased serum lipid peroxidation and decreased antioxidant enzymes in erythrocytes of chronic fascioliasis patients indicated the presence of persistent inflammation and oxidative stress which confirms the underlying pathogenesis and reflected the stage of infection providing a baseline data for comparison between normal and infected patients guided by the level of liver enzymes in relation to oxidative status.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to analyze the antioxidant status and oxidative profile in serum and liver of rats experimentally infected with Fasciola hepatica and its relationship with pathological findings. Twenty-four rats were divided into two groups: group A consisted of 12 healthy rats and group B of 12 rats infected orally with 20 metacercaria of F. hepatica. At days 20 and 150 post-infection (PI), blood and liver samples of six animals from each group were collected. The protein oxidation (AOPP technique: advanced oxidation protein products) and antioxidants (FRAP technique: ferric reducing antioxidant power) levels were measured in serum and liver. Furthermore, nitrite/nitrate (NOx) levels and lipid peroxidation (TBARS technique: thiobarbituric acid reactive substances) were measured in liver. AOPP and FRAP levels were increased (P < 0.05) in serum and liver of infected animals in acute and chronic infection when compared with healthy animals. The same occurred with TBARS and NOx levels in the liver (P < 0.05). Histopathology revealed periportal fibrous hepatitis, composed of an abundant inflammatory infiltrate in portal spaces on infected animals, as well as bile duct hyperplasia. The results found seem to be related to the host free radical production demonstrated in serum samples and liver due to the parasite infection.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total oxidant status (TOS), and oxidative stress index (OSI) in sheep and lambs with cyctic eccinocoocosis (CE) diagnosed by ultrasonography and necropsy findings. A total of 9 sheep and 17 lambs with CE were used in this study and the findings were compared to those of 6 healthy control sheep. Ultrasonography were used for the diagnosis of CE in sheep and lambs, and necropsy was performed to check the presence of cysts in liver and lungs. Serum TOS and TAC were measured by a novel colorimetric method. The TOS-to-TAC ratios were also calculated as OSI values. Serum biochemical profiles were determined by conventional measurement methods as well. The mean values for TOS, TAC and OSI were significantly (p<0.001) lower in sheep and lambs with CE when compared with those of the control sheep, and they were also significantly lower in lambs with CE in comparison to the mean values obtained in sheep with CE. The levels of serum albumin, total cholesterol, creatinine, and triglycerides in lambs with CE were found out to decrease significantly (p<0.001) when compared with those of both sheep with EC and the control group. There were no significant differences between the groups in terms of other serum parameters. In addition, when clinically and some biochemical values were evaluated, CE was found to be more severe in lambs than in sheep. It was concluded that although common diagnostic cyst detection is performed by postmortem examination, ultrasonography could successfully be used in conjunction with serum biochemical profile detection and serum TOS, TAC and OSI measurements for diagnosis of cysts in liver and lungs of severely infected living sheep and lambs. Serum albumin, total cholesterol, creatinine, total protein and triglycerides might be used as indicators in sheep and particularly in lambs for the diagnosis of CE.

Abstract
Nuclear medicine has been using radiopharmaceuticals for the diagnostic and therapeutic purposes of many diseases. Technetium-(99m) methoxyisobutylisonitrile ((99m)Tc sestamibi) is a lypophilic complex that has a positive-loaded isonitril group. Aim of the study is to investigate whether (99m)Tc sestamibi, which is one of the mostly used radiopharmaceuticals in nuclear medicine field, causes oxidative damage or not in rats' heart after an injection. A total of 16 male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into two groups: group I: (99m)Tc sestamibi group, (99m)Tc sestamibi administered intravenously with the dose of 25MBq; group II: control group, one dose of isotonic sodium chloride was administered intravenous with the same volume as (99m)Tc sestamibi group. Malondialdehyde (MDA) and total oxidant status (TOS) were used as markers of oxidative stress-induced heart impairment. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and total antioxidant status (TAS) activities were studied to evaluate the changes in the antioxidant status. In the (99m)Tc sestamibi group (group I), animals treated with (99m)Tc sestamibi produced a significant decrease in the activities of antioxidant enzymes (SOD and CAT), while MDA level increased when compared with control group (group II) in myocardial tissue (p < 0.05). On the other hand, the GSH-Px activities were significantly increased in the (99m)Tc sestamibi-treated rats compared with the untreated rats (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in the TAS and TOS levels of plasma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND F. hepatica infection is rare and mostly subclinical. Migration of juvenile forms of F. hepatica into the host's liver is accompanied by an inflammatory reaction followed by fibrosis and cirrhosis. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate oxidative status by using a novel automated method in patients with Fasciola hepatica. METHODS Twenty two patients with a diagnosis of F. hepatica and 26 healthy volunteers were enrolled in the study. Their Total antioxidant capacity status (TAC), total oxidant status (TOS) and catalase were measured in them and oxidative stress index (OSI) was calculated. These measurements were also taken for the control group and the values were compared. RESULTS Plasma levels of total TOS and OSI were significantly increased in patients as compared with healthy controls (P<0.001, P<0.001, P=0.001, P=0.008) respectively. In contrast, TAC level was significantly lower in patients as compared with controls (p<0.05). There was no significant difference between the catalase results of the two groups (p>0.05). CONCLUSION Total oxidative status and OSI were increased and total antioxidative status capacity was decreased in patients with F. hepatica infection. A high oxidative stress occurs during F. hepatica infection, which may cause severe damage in both the liver.

Abstract
Fasciolosis is a hepatic parasitic infection that affects many mammal species and creates a great economic and veterinary problem. Molecular mechanisms of parasite–hepatocyte interactions have not been precisely characterized yet. Therefore, the aim of the study was to investigate alterations in the metabolic activity of rat liver cells exposed to Fasciola hepatica somatic proteins. Hepatocytes were incubated with 0–1 mg/ml of fluke's somatic proteins for various periods of time. Afterward, changes in hepatocytes metabolic activity were determined with MTT and enzyme leakage tests. Hepatocytes' capacity to synthesize albumin was also investigated. It was observed that protein concentration, as well as longevity of their action, influenced metabolic activity of rat liver cells. Diminution of hepatocytes survival rate, an increase in enzyme leakage and altered synthetic capacity after treatment with parasite's proteins were reported. It is concluded that somatic proteins of F. hepatica may play an important role in liver cell damaging.

Abstract
Oestrus ovis (Diptera: Oestridae) causes an important cosmopolitan parasitosis of the nasal and sinusal cavities of sheep and goats called oestrosis. Our objective was to analyze the participation of erythrocytes in the antioxidant system in goats seropositive to O. ovis infection under field conditions. Fifty female goats naturally exposed to O. ovis infection from Baja California Sur, México, were blood-sampled. Erythrocytic intracellular content was obtained from blood plasma. Oestrosis serodiagnosis was determined by ELISA. Protein, hemoglobin (Hb), superoxide dismutase (SOD), mieloperoxidase (MPO), catalase (CAT), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), and lipid peroxidation in erythrocytes were determined in both seropositive and seronegative goats. Overall seroprevalence of O. ovis infection in goats was 56%. Positive significant (P<0.05) associations were observed among systemic IgG level and protein (0.34), hemoglobin (0.43), SOD (0.32), and MPO (0.41) in erythrocytes. Protein and hemoglobin concentrations, as well as SOD and MPO activities in erythrocytes were found significantly higher (P<0.05) in seropositive than in seronegative goats. By contrast, enzymatic activities of CAT and GST and lipid peroxidation values were similar in seropositive and seronegative groups. In conclusion, there was a systemic stimulation of Reactive Oxygen Species which was efficiently scavenged by erythrocytic antioxidant enzymes in goats seropositive to O. ovis infection.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Balanites aegyptiaca (Balantiaceae), mainly the fruit, is used by traditional healers and herbalists for treating many diseases in Africa and Asia. AIM OF THE STUDY Investigation of fixed oil composition of fruits and evaluation of its biological activity. MATERIALS AND METHODS Oil content was identified using GC and GC/MS. In vitro examination of the oil biological activity (including cytotoxicity, antimutagenicity, antiparasitic, antiviral and antimicrobial activities) was performed. RESULTS The oil contained 54.53% unsaturated fatty acids and 1.14% sterols. The oil exhibited anticancer activity against lung, liver and brain human carcinoma cell lines. It also had antimutagenic activity against Fasciola gigantica induced mutagenicity besides anthelmintic activity against hepatic worms (Schistosoma mansoni and Fasciola gigantica). Preliminary screening showed that the oil had antiviral activity against Herpes simplex virus. It also had antimicrobial activity against selected strains of Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria and Candida. CONCLUSION The results showed remarkable biological activity of Balanites aegyptiaca fixed oil and proved its importance as natural bioactive source.

Abstract
Oxidative stress is a general mechanism whereby free radicals induce oxidative damages and reduce the antioxidant defences of the biological systems. The aim of the present study was to determine plasma malondialdehyde levels as a biomarker of lipid peroxidation and its relation to the antioxidants status (plasma ascorbate and blood glutathione concentrations), liver function tests and anaemia in spontaneous ovine fascioliasis. For this purpose, jugular blood samples and livers of 27 infected ewes with Fasciola hepatica along with blood samples of 20 healthy (control) ewes were collected from animals slaughtered in a F. hepatica endemic area (Kharga oasis, Egypt). An increase (P<0.001) in plasma malondialdehyde (141.1%) accompanied by decreased levels (P<0.001) of albumin (29.3%) and ascorbate (36.2%) in plasma and glutathione in blood (31.6%) of infected sheep was noticed when compared with control values. In the infected group, malondialdehyde values were positively correlated with liver fluke burden (r=0.57, P=0.002) and the activity of plasma aspartate aminotransferase (r=0.39, P=0.0.046) and gamma-glutamyltransferase (r=0.64, P=0.0003) and negatively correlated with the concentrations of albumin (r=-0.53, P=0.004), ascorbate (r=-0.46, P=0.0.17) and glutathione (r=-0.41, P=0.034). In conclusion, oxidative stress is a significant feature of chronic F. hepatica infection in grazing sheep.
