Perceptual Contrast Enhancement with Dynamic Range Adjustment

SCALE SPACE DETECTOR FOR ANALYZING SPATIOTEMPORAL VENTRICULAR CONTRACTILITY AND NUCLEAR MORPHOGENESIS IN ZEBRAFISH

In vivo quantitative assessment of structural and functional biomarkers is essential for characterizing the pathophysiology of congenital disorders. In this regard, fixed tissue analysis has offered revolutionary insights into the underlying cellular architecture. However, histological analysis faces major drawbacks with respect to lack of spatiotemporal sampling and tissue artifacts during sample preparation. This study demonstrates the potential of light sheet fluorescence microscopy (LSFM) as a non-invasive, 4D (3days + time) optical sectioning tool for revealing cardiac mechano-transduction in zebrafish. Furthermore, we have described the utility of a scale and size-invariant feature detector, for analyzing individual morphology of fused cardiomyocyte nuclei and characterizing zebrafish ventricular contractility.

Quantitative Multiparametric MRI May Augment the Response to Radiotherapy in Mid-Treatment Assessment of Patients with Esophageal Carcinoma

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this study was to assess the mid-treatment response to radiotherapy (RT) using dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI) and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) in patients with esophageal cancer (EC).

METHODS

42 patients with squamous EC were prepared for DCE-MRI and DWI scans both before treatment (NRT) and after the fifth radiotherapy (5th RT). The patients were classified into two groups (complete response [CR] and partial response [PR]) according to tumor regression after treatment. The quantitative parameters of DCE-MRI (Ktrans, Kep, Ve, and ADC) were measured. A receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was used to detect the efficiency of the above parameters.

RESULTS

After 1 month of RT, 29 patients were classified as CR and 11 patients were classified as PR. In the NRT group, the p values of Ktrans, Kep, Ve, and ADC were 0.004, 0.078, 0.0008, and <0.0001, respectively. After the 5th RT, the p values of the above parameters were <0.001, 0.005, 0.108, and 0.365, respectively. In the NRT group, the areas under the ROC curves of Ktrans, Ve, and ADC were 0.790, 0.617, and 0.737; the sensitivity values were 89.3, 92.5, and 90.0%; the specificity values were 69.4, 27.5, and 50.0%. In the 5th RT group, the areas under the ROC curves of Ktrans and Kep were 0.816 and 0.804; the sensitivity values were 71.2 and 95.0%; the specificity values were 81.6 and 50.0%.

CONCLUSION

DCE-MRI combined with DWI is effective in the early prediction of radiotherapeutic response of EC after the 5th RT other than after the traditional final treatment.

Dental radiography image enhancement for treatment evaluation through digital image processing

Background

Evaluation of dental treatment is performed by observing dental periapical radiography to obtain information of filling’s condition, pulp tissue, remain dentin thickness, periodontal ligament, and lamina dura. Nevertheless, the radiographic image used often has low quality due to the level of x-ray radiation made low purposely in order to prevent health problem and limited tools capability. This low quality of the radiographic image, for examples, low image contrast, less brightness, and noise existence cause periapical radiography evaluation hard to be performed. This study aims to improve dental radiographic image quality for assisting pulp capping treatment evaluation.

Material and Methods

The research methodology consists of three main stages, i.e. data collection, image enhancement method production, and result validation. Radiographic image data collection in The Dental Hospital UMY. Image enhancement method has been conducted by comparing several methods: contourlet transform (CT), wavelet transform, contrast stretching (CS), and contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE) to reduce noise, to optimize image contrast, and to enhance image brightness.

Results

The result of this study is according to mean square error (MSE) and peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) statistics evaluation, it obtains that the highest scores of MSE and PSNR in row gained from CT method totaled 5.441453 and 40.53652, followed by CLAHE method with the scores are 10.66326 and 38.00736, CS method whose scores are 12.39881 and 39.18518, and the last is wavelet method with the scores are 15.41569 and 36.25343.

Conclusions

Nonetheless, MSE and PSNR scores are not enough merely to give a recommendation of any suitable methods for improving contrast, therefore, it needs another success parameter coming from the dentist.

A fast color image enhancement algorithm based on Max Intensity Channel

In this paper, we extend image enhancement techniques based on the retinex theory imitating human visual perception of scenes containing high illumination variations. This extension achieves simultaneous dynamic range modification, color consistency, and lightness rendition without multi-scale Gaussian filtering which has a certain halo effect. The reflection component is analyzed based on the illumination and reflection imaging model. A new prior named Max Intensity Channel (MIC) is implemented assuming that the reflections of some points in the scene are very high in at least one color channel. Using this prior, the illumination of the scene is obtained directly by performing a gray-scale closing operation and a fast cross-bilateral filtering on the MIC of the input color image. Consequently, the reflection component of each RGB color channel can be determined from the illumination and reflection imaging model. The proposed algorithm estimates the illumination component which is relatively smooth and maintains the edge details in different regions. A satisfactory color rendition is achieved for a class of images that do not satisfy the gray-world assumption implicit to the theoretical foundation of the retinex. Experiments are carried out to compare the new method with several spatial and transform domain methods. Our results indicate that the new method is superior in enhancement applications, improves computation speed, and performs well for images with high illumination variations than other methods. Further comparisons of images from National Aeronautics and Space Administration and a wearable camera eButton have shown a high performance of the new method with better color restoration and preservation of image details.
