Abstract
Web-based health information is the leading source of medical knowledge for patients and families. The American Medical Association (AMA) and US Department of Health and Human Services recommend reading material be at or below a sixth-grade reading level. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the readability of the most popularly searched cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) and other craniofacial syndrome (CFS) websites. Google searches for "cleft lip," "cleft palate," and "craniofacial syndromes" were performed to identify the top 40 websites in an incognito window with the location set to the United States. Flesch Reading Ease Score (FRES) was used to determine ease of reading from 0 (most difficult) to 100 (greatest ease of reading) and Flesch-Kincaid Reading Grade (FKGL) for website content and compared between websites using an FRES of 80 to 90 and FKGL of 6.0 to 6.9 for a sixth-grade reading level. Readability was low for all sites with 6 CL/P websites and no CFS websites at or below a sixth-grade reading level. CL/P websites had FRES readability scores of 58.5 ± 12.3 and were at a 9.4 ± 2.3 grade level. CFS websites had readability scores on the FRES of 39.8 ± 13.1 and were at a 10.8 ± 1.8 grade level. Web-based information related to CL/P and CFS is on average several grade levels above the recommended sixth-grade reading level. Online information for CL/P and CFS may need to be revised to improve understanding for the public and families.

Empowerment of Parents of Children With Cleft Lip and Palate by Objective Scoring of Patient Information Websites. J Craniofac Surg 2021; 32:2050-2052. Abstract
BACKGROUND Whether a new diagnosis or for ongoing care, the Internet is now an established and massively frequented resource for parents and patients with cleft lip and/or palate. The purpose of this study was to assess the correlation between the first 50 ranked websites for cleft lip and palate via the Google search engine versus those ranked with an objective patient information scoring tool. METHODS The first 50 websites ranked by Google were recorded for the search items "Cleft Lip," "Cleft Palate" and "Cleft Lip and Palate." Quality assessment was performed using the DISCERN score, an objective and validated patient information website scoring tool. The Google rank was compared to the DISCERN rank to assess for correlation. The top five websites for each search item were then ranked by blinded cleft health professionals for quality. RESULTS Based on Google ranking, 36% of websites were the same across the search terms used. The DISCERN ranking scores demonstrated no evidence of positive or negative correlation when compared to Google ranking. In the top 10 DISCERN ranked websites for each search item, 4 websites appear in the top 10 Google rankings. CONCLUSION This is the first study that demonstrates that high-quality information on cleft lip and palate is available on the Internet. However, this may be difficult and confusing for parents and patients to access due to the ranking system used by internet search engines. Cleft healthcare professionals should be aware of these problems when recommending websites to families and patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Informed decision-making relies on available information, including online resources. We evaluated the content and readability of websites published by American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association (ACPA)-approved cleft lip and/or palate (CLP) teams in the United States. DESIGN Team websites were reviewed, and teams with no accessible website or <30 sentences of content were excluded. Website content was scored by presence/absence of 20 variables derived from ACPA approval standards. Readability was evaluated with 8 scales. Readability was then compared to American Medical Association (AMA) recommendations. The relationship between website content and readability was assessed. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S) Content and readability of team websites. RESULTS From 167 reviewed teams, 47 (28.1%) had nonfunctional links, 17 (10.2%) had no accessible website, and 39 (23.4%) had <30 sentences. The average content score for all 111 team websites included was 14.5 (2.6) of 20. The combined average reading level across all scales (10.7 [1.9]) exceeded the AMA-recommended sixth-grade reading level; this finding held true for each individual website. Children's Hospital-affiliated teams (n = 86) had a significantly higher content score (14.8 vs 13.5; P = .03) and better readability as evidenced by lower reading grade level (10.5 vs 11.4; P = .04). On linear regression, a higher content score significantly predicted better readability (β = -0.226; P < .001). CONCLUSIONS Websites published by ACPA-approved CLP teams vary in accessibility and content and exceed the recommended reading level. These findings could inform future efforts to improve patient-oriented resources.

Abstract
Objectives Consumers rely on online health information, particularly for unusual conditions. Disorders of Sex Development (DSD) are complex with some aspects of care controversial. Accurate web-based DSD information is essential for decision-making, but the quality has not been rigorously evaluated. The purpose of the present study was to assess the quality of online health information related to DSD presented by 12 pediatric institutions comprising the NIH-sponsored DSD-Translational Research Network (DSD-TRN). Methods DSD-TRN sites identified team webpages, then we identified linked webpages. We also used each institution search engine to search common DSD terms. We assessed webpages using validated tools: the Simple Measure of Gobbledygook (SMOG) determined reading level, the Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool (PEMAT) evaluated content for understandability and actionability, and the DISCERN tool assessed treatment decision-making information (for hormone replacement and surgery). We developed a “Completeness” measure which assessed the presence of information on 25 DSD topics. Results The SMOG reading level of webpages was at or above high-school grade level. Mean (SD) PEMAT understandability score for Team Pages and Team Links was 68% (6%); on average these pages met less than 70% of the understandability criteria. Mean (SD) PEMAT actionability score was 23% (20%); few patient actions were identified. The DISCERN tool determined that the quality of information related to hormone treatment and to surgery was poor. Sites’ webpages covered 12–56% of the items on our Completeness measure. Conclusions Quality of DSD online content was poor, and would be improved by using a variety of strategies, such as simplifying word choice, using visual aids, highlighting actions patients can take and acknowledging areas of uncertainty. For complex conditions such as DSD, high-quality web-based information is essential to empower patients (and caregiver proxies), particularly when aspects of care are controversial.

Abstract
Three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound has significantly improved prenatal screening and perinatal care in the area of cleft lip/palate and other deformities, providing essential preoperative information to the surgical team. However, current 3D reconstruction modalities are limited primarily to display on a two-dimensional surface. In contrast, a 3D printed haptic model allows both the surgeon and the parents to develop a better understanding of the anatomy and the surgical procedure through the ability to interact directly with the printed model. The production of a 3D printed haptic model of cleft lip and palate obtained from a surface-rendered oropalatal sonographic view is presented here. The development of this 3D printed haptic model will allow the surgical team to perform preoperative planning with a highly accurate medical model, and it therefore represents a new tool in the management of cleft lip/palate. It also provides better prenatal information for the parents.
