Abstract
SUMMARY BACKGROUND: Recurrent laryngeal papillomatosis, caused by the Human Papilloma Virus, has a significant economic impact worldwide and there are no epidemiological data of this disease in Brasil. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to estimate the incidence and prevalence of laryngeal papillomatosis of some otorhinolaryngology centers in São Paulo State (Brasil). METHODS: A questionnaire containing data on the number of new and follow-up cases diagnosed with laryngeal papillomatosis was sent to the Otorhinolaryngology services (n=35) of São Paulo State (Brasil). RESULTS: A total of 20 otorhinolaryngology centers answered the questionnaire. Of these, the five largest regional health centers were selected as follows: Campinas (42 cities – 4,536,657 inhabitants), Sao Jose do Rio Preto (102 cities – 1,602,845 inhabitants), Ribeirão Preto (26 cities – 1,483,715 inhabitants), Bauru (68 cities – 1,770,427 inhabitants), and Sorocaba (47 cities – 2,478,208 inhabitants). The incidence and prevalence of each regional health centers were, respectively: Campinas (5.51;7.27), Sorocaba (2.02;6.86), São José do Rio Preto (1.87;7.49), Ribeirão Preto (11.46;22.92), and Bauru (3.95;7.91). CONCLUSION: The incidence and prevalence of the laryngeal papillomatosis of the five largest regional health centers of the interior of São Paulo State (Brasil) varied between 1.87 to 11.46 and 6.86 to 22.92 per 1,000,000 inhabitants, respectively for a total population of 11,871,852 inhabitants.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Juvenile-onset recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (JoRRP) is a rare yet aggressive disease caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). Although many newborns are likely exposed to HPV, few develop JoRRP and the clinical course of the disease varies from one child to another. This systematic review seeks to provide an up-to-date understanding of the risk factors for acquisition and severity. METHODS We conducted a comprehensive literature search in EMBASE, MEDLINE and EBMR databases using various combinations of keywords related to JoRRP etiology, risk factors and severity. We also searched Google Scholar and the reference lists of eligible studies. Our search was limited to original studies published in French or English between 1995 and July 2012 and to patients under 20 years of age. RESULTS Of 1362 citations, we retrieved 102 articles and found 14 additional studies. We retained 32 studies meeting inclusion criteria. All were observational and together included 2296 JoRRP cases. Risk factors could be classified mainly as maternal and birth history, viral genotype, and host factors. A history of genital warts during pregnancy and delivery was strongly linked to the development of JoRRP. Depending on ethnicity, specific human leukocyte antigen class II alleles and immune response factors were important determinants of JoRRP acquisition and severity. HPV-11 genotype and younger age at onset of JoRRP were important predictors of severity. CONCLUSIONS Genetic and immunological profiles underlying the acquisition and clinical course are not readily modifiable. Thus, preventing condylomas in women of childbearing age could reduce the burden of this life-threatening disease.

Abstract
The role of human papilloma viruses (HPV) in malignant and nonmalignant ENT diseases and the corresponding epidemiological burden has been widely described. International head and neck oncology community discussed growing evidence that oral HPV infection contributes to the risk of oro-pharyngeal carcinoma (OPC) and recommended HPV testing as a part of the work up for patients with OPC. Polish Society of ENT Head Neck Surgery and National Chamber of Laboratory Diagnosticians have worked together to define the minimum requirements for assigning a diagnosis of HPV-related conditions and testing strategy that include HPV specific tests in our country. This paper briefly frames the literature information concerning low risk (LR) and high risk (HR) HPV, reviews the epidemiology, general guidance on the most appropriate biomarkers for clinical assessment of HPV. The definition of HPV-related cancer was presented. The article is aiming to highlight some of major issues for the clinician dealing with patients with HPV-related morbidities and to introduce the diagnostic algorithm in Poland.

Abstract
Human papilloma virus has been implicated as the cause of juvenile-onset recurrent respiratory papillomatosis in first-born children. Thus, cesarean section is strongly recommended by obstetricians to avoid direct contact with papilloma in an infected birth canal. We report a parturient with silent hypopharyngeal papilloma, which was associated with severe clinical problems at the induction of general anesthesia. The anesthesiologist considered general anesthesia for this case because of disseminated skin warts and secondary pus across the patient's body. Although the patient's breathing was smooth before starting general anesthesia, it was difficult to maintain positive pressure ventilation despite administration of a muscle relaxant. High air-way resistance without chest wall motion was noted, despite the insertion of an oral airway. Therefore, direct laryngoscopy was immediately performed and an obstructing mass was found. This mass acted as a check valve during positive ventilation. Our report should remind clinicians that human papilloma virus infection, although benign, can be disastrous in certain circumstances, as in our case where it resulted in airway obstruction and distal spread during cesarean section. Its presence necessitated preoperative laryngoscopic evaluation and aggressive treatment.

Abstract
Human papillomavirus (HPV) causes disease not only in the genital tract, but also in the larynx. Within the larynx HPV 6/11 causes recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP). RRP is relatively uncommon, yet it is devastating for the patient who requires many surgical procedures over years to control it. The cost of HPV-related genital tract disease is thought to be around £31 million per annum, whereas RRP costs in the region of £4 million annually despite RRP being comparatively rare. The HPV vaccination programme has brought great hope, although it is unfortunate that the current UK programme only targets high-risk HPV. Targeting both low- and high-risk HPV would have had additional benefits for the UK.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Human Papillomavirus (HPV) 6 and 11 are the aetiological agents responsible for Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis (RRP). There is general consensus that HPV11 results in more aggressive disease compared to HPV6. METHOD Pubmed was searched using the terms respiratory papillomatosis, HPV 6 and HPV11. Comparisons were made in the outcomes of HPV6 versus HPV11 positive RRP disease. RESULTS There are numerous sub-types or variants of both HPV6 and HPV11. These sub-types have different activities at least in-vitro. The numbers of different HPV types within RRP tissue may be more extensive than initially appeared. This depends specifically upon the HPV types tested for. CONCLUSION The clinical differences between HPV6 and HPV11 disease may not be accurately predictable as these viruses exist in numerous sub-types. Also, RRP tissue may contain more than one subtype or even be co-infected with other viruses that may influence outcome. In-vitro studies upon cell lines are a reasonable starting point for evaluation of these differences.

Abstract
Vocal fold masses are often complex in nature and can have a devastating result on the professional voice. These lesions are usually multifactorial with synergistic contributions over time from voice use demands and technique, medical conditions, medications, and the environment. General categories of benign vocal fold masses in professional voice include nodules, polyps, and cysts, but other pathology should be considered, such as reactive lesions, intracordal scarring, feeding varices, and reparative granuloma.
