Abstract
Aim: The aim of the study is to examine the relationship between obesity, Vitamin-D deficiency, and protein oxidation. Methods: Thiol-disulfide homeostasis, Vitamin-D, ischemia modified albumin, insulin, and lipid levels were compared among obese, pre-obese and normal-weight healthy children. Results: A total of 136 children (69 boys and 67 girls) were included in the study. The vitamin-D levels of obese children were lower than those of pre-obese and normal weight (p < 0.05). In the normal weight group, total thiol and native thiol were lower in the pubertal period than in adolescence; were higher in those with sufficient Vitamin-D level than those with insufficient and deficient Vitamin-D (p < 0.05). Vitamin-D level was lower in pre-obese girls than boys (p < 0.05). Those with high triglycerides had high disulfide/total thiol, disulfide, and disulfide/native thiol and low native thiol/total thiol (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Thiol-disulfide homeostasis is negatively affected by low vitamin D levels, pubertal period and high triglyceride levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oxidative stress plays a role in the pathogenesis of many chronic diseases. Upper airway obstruction has been identified as a risk factor for increased oxidative stress-related disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea. The effect of adenotonsillar hypertrophy, which may result in a narrowing of the upper airways, on oxidative stress can be a valuable subject of research. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of adenotonsillectomy on oxidative stress evaluated using the thiol / disulfide balance. METHODS Thirty children who underwent adenotonsillectomy and 30 healthy controls, all aged from 3 to 18 years, were included in the study. Blood samples were taken preoperatively and 3 months postoperatively in the study group; in the control group, baseline blood samples were taken and samples were again taken 3 months later. Thiol / disulfide homeostasis items were analyzed. Antioxidant markers were native thiol, total thiol, and native / total thiol. Oxidative stress markers were disulfide, disulfide / native thiol, and disulfide / total thiol. RESULTS At the preoperative period, oxidative stress parameters of thiol / disulfide homeostasis were higher in the study group than in the control group (P < 0.05) and antioxidant activity parameters were lower than in the control group (P < 0.05). Three months postoperatively, oxidative stress parameters were lower than in the control group (P < 0.05), and antioxidant parameters were no different from those in the control group (P > 0.05). In the adenotonsillectomy group considered separately, oxidative stress markers of disulfide and disulfide / native thiol decreased (P < 0.05) and antioxidant markers of native thiol and total thiol increased in the postoperative measurements (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Oxidative stress related to adenotonsillar hypertrophy decreased after adenotonsillectomy. The antioxidant parameters of the thiol homeostasis increased after adenotonsillectomy. We concluded that adenotonsillectomy operations should be planned and applied timeously to prevent the adverse effects of adenotonsillar hypertrophies on thiol homeostasis.

Abstract
AIM Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a chronic and incapacitating disease that often requires lifelong care. This study aimed to evaluate the thiol/disulfide homeostasis in patients with OSAS, to compare the thiol/disulfide levels with the control group and to investigate their relationship with the severity of the disease. MATERIAL AND METHODS Patients who were admitted to the department of chest diseases, and diagnosed with OSAS using polysomnographic analysis (n = 186) and 144 patients who underwent polysomnography due to some reasons but ruled out of having OSAS were included in the study. Serum total thiol (TT), native thiol (SH), and disulfide thiol (SS) levels were measured from the participants; SS/SH, SS/TT, and SH/TT percent ratios were calculated and compared between the patient and control groups. RESULTS The mean (±SD) age of the patients and control participants was 52.0 ± 11.5 years and 44.9 ± 13.2 years, respectively. Compared to the control group, patients with OSAS had significantly lower SH (239.3 ± 56.3 μmol/L vs. 258.6 ± 65.3μmol/L, t = 2.70, p =.007) and TT levels (273.2 ± 60.1 μmol/L vs. 292.9 ± 67.5μmol/L, t = 2.64, p=.010). Age (OR = 1.04), serum albumin (OR = 12.67), ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) (OR = 0.12), SH (OR = 0.81), and TT (OR = 1.17) were independent predictors of OSAS. CONCLUSIONS These results support the idea that decreased ST and TT levels are related to increased oxidative stress. On the other hand, impaired thiol balance may play a significant role in the pathogenesis of OSAS.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is an oxidative stress disease, which has been considered to be a notable risk and associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Thiol-disulfide homeostasis is as a novel indicator of oxidative stress. OBJECTIVES We aimed to evaluate thiol-disulfide homeostasis in a large patient population with OSA. METHODS A total of 230 with OSA and 40 healthy controls were included in the study. Inclusion criteria for OSA patients are having apnoea-hypopnoea index of ≥5/hour, being more than 18 years of age and having no previous treatment for OSA. Thiol-disulfide analysis was done for the patients and control group. Blood thiol-disulfide homeostasis was analysed using the new automatic method, developed by Erel and Neşelioğlu. RESULTS Among all OSA subjects, 149 (64.8%) were males and the mean ages of the patients were 53.38 ± 10.22. Total thiol, native thiol (SH) and disulfide (SS) levels were significantly lower in OSA group compared to the control group (P < .001, P < .001 and P = .039 respectively). Also, total thiol and native thiol (SH) were significantly different between the groups according to OSA severity (mild-moderate to severe OSA) (P < .001 and P < .001 respectively). Thiol-disulfide redox parameters were correlated with apnoea-hypopnoea index (AHI) scores. CONCLUSION The present prospective study showed that thiol/disulfide homeostasis was unbalanced in OSA patients. Especially, in OSA patients have low level of thiol/disulfide redox parameters when compared to healthy subjects. Evaluating thiol-disulfide homeostasis in OSA may be a contributing aspect to assessment and monitoring of the patient.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Impairment of thiol/disulfide homeostasis, as well as vitamin D deficiency, are responsible for the pathophysiology of many acute and chronic diseases. This study examined the relationship between thiol/disulfide homeostasis and vitamin D level and supplementation. METHODS A total of 203 healthy children were included in the study. The participants were divided into four groups according to 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) level: group 1, severe deficiency (<10 ng/mL); group 2, deficiency (10-20 ng/mL); group 3, insufficiency (20-30 ng/mL); and group 4, sufficiency (≥30 ng/mL). Furthermore, group 5 was defined as being on vitamin D supplementation. RESULT Native thiol was lower in group 5 than in groups 2-4 (P = 0.003). Disulfide was higher in groups 1, 4 and 5 than groups 2 and 3 (P < 0.001). Total thiol was lower in group 5 than in group 4 (P = 0.032). The ratio of native thiol/total thiol was lower in groups 1 and 5 compared with groups 2 and 3, and in group 4 compared with group 3 (P < 0.001). The ratios of disulfide/total thiol and disulfide/native thiol were higher in groups 1 and 5 than in groups 2 and 3 whereas only the disulfide/total thiol ratio was higher in group 4 than in group 3 (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS In healthy children, severe deficiency of vitamin D causes impairment of thiol/disulfide homeostasis and increases protein oxidation, which cannot be reversed by external vitamin D supplementation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The pathogenesis of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) remains unknown, but imbalance between the oxidant and antioxidant defense systems may play a role. Measuring thiols in plasma provides an indirect indication of antioxidative defense. The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between JIA and dynamic thiol/disulfide homeostatic status. METHODS This case-control study involved 34 JIA patients and 30 age- and gender-matched healthy controls. The patients were divided into subgroups according to Simplified Disease Activity Index (SDAI) score: active, SDAI > 3.3; remission, SDAI ≤ 3.3. RESULTS Native thiol and total thiol were significantly lower in the JIA group than in the control group (P = 0.001). There was no significant difference in the disulfide/native thiol, disulfide/total thiol, and native thiol/total thiol ratios between the JIA and control groups (P > 0.05). Based on SDAI score, 22 JIA patients were in the remission subgroup, and 12 JIA patients were in the active subgroup. Native thiol and total thiol were significantly lower in the active JIA subgroup than in the remission subgroup (P = 0.001), but there were no significant differences in the other parameters. There was no significant difference in thiol and disulfide levels between systemic-onset JIA and other JIA (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Plasma thiol is lower in JIA patients, especially during periods of active disease, than in healthy controls, indicating that low thiol might be an important factor in the etiology of JIA and that antioxidant systems are negatively affected by inflammatory diseases, especially during periods of active disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Although there has been much research into the cause of stuttering, it has not yet been fully clarified. There is known to be a close relationship between stress severity and stuttering. The aim of this study was to evaluate the levels of oxidative and nitrosative stress by comparing a stuttering group and a control group. It was also aimed to evaluate the relationship between the oxidative and nitrosative stress levels and the severity of the stutter. METHODS The study included a total of 80 individuals, comprising a study group of 40 and a control group of 40. The severity of the stutter in the patient group was evaluated with the Stuttering Severity Instrument 3 (SSI). Blood samples were taken from both the patient and control groups and malondialdehyde (MDA), 3 nitrotyrosine (3-NT), nitric oxide (NO), catalase (CAT), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) concentrations were examined. RESULTS In the stuttering patients, MDA, 3-NT, NO, CAT, and SOD activity were determined to be statistically significantly higher than those of the control group (all p:0.001). In the ROC analysis, there was good diagnostic value for NO, with the area under the curve as 1.0. A direct, positive, statistically significant correlation was determined between SSI points and MDA values (r = 0.317, p = 0.046). CONCLUSION The results of the study showed that the oxidative and nitrosative stress levels of the stuttering patients were higher than those of the control group. With 100% sensitivity and specificity, it is thought that NO in particular could be important for the diagnosis and treatment of these patients. As the severity of the stutter increased, so there was an increase in MDA, suggesting that MDA is important in stuttering.
