Dynamic capabilities, value creation and value capture: Evidence from SMEs under Covid-19 lockdown in Poland

Dynamic capabilities, resulting from activities that allow conscious and skillful modification of a firm's strategic potential, are seen as one of the key drivers of a firm's value creation, competitive advantage and above-average performance in changing environments. However, little is known about how dynamic capabilities can shape business survival and performance during crises. The research objective of this paper is twofold. First, through a literature review, we seek to identify which first-order dynamic capabilities-managerial decisions under uncertainty-are vital for rapid response to a crisis. Second, we present the results of research carried out among 151 small and medium-sized companies in Poland immediately after the beginning of the economic lockdown (April 2020). The survey that we developed identifies which dynamic capabilities were essential for businesses to survive during this unexpected black swan event. We also present dependence and regression analyses showing the links between the identified dynamic capabilities and value creation, understood as retaining employees and production levels, as well as value capture, understood as maintaining cash flow and current revenues.

Strategic Information System Planning in Healthcare Organizations

The healthcare industry is a critical and growing part of economies worldwide. To provide better quality of care, and value for money, billions of dollars are being spent on bettering information systems in healthcare organizations. Strategic Information System Planning (SISP) is instrumental in making informed decisions to achieve the health organizations' goals and objectives. This paper undertakes a systematic review to gain insight into existing studies on SISP in healthcare organizations. Our systematic review of papers on SISP from 1985 to 2011 examines the background and trend of research into SISP in the healthcare industry, classification of topics in SISP, as well as sets of tools and guidelines to aid practitioners and the research community alike.

The Difficult but Necessary Task of Developing a Specific Project Team Research Agenda

Project teams are central to organizations everywhere; however, there is a knowledge gap between project management scholars on the one hand and organizational behavior and industrial–organizational (OB/IO) scholars on the other. This gap seriously impedes the advancement of knowledge, because scholars from both fields have not leveraged each other's considerable knowledge and might be relying on outdated models and evidence to study project team phenomena, manage project teams, or develop university curricula. A call is made for interdisciplinary research projects devoted specifically to developing a research agenda on project teams.

Development of a Methodological Approach for Data Quality Ontology in Diabetes Management

The role of ontologies in chronic disease management and associated challenges such as defining data quality (DQ) and its specification is a current topic of interest. In domains such as Diabetes Management, a robust Data Quality Ontology (DQO) is required to support the automation of data extraction semantically from Electronic Health Record (EHR) and access and manage DQ, so that the data set is fit for purpose. A five steps strategy is proposed in this paper to create the DQO which captures the semantics of clinical data. It consists of: (1) Knowledge acquisition; (2) Conceptualization; (3) Semantic modeling; (4) Knowledge representation; and (5) Validation. The DQO was applied to the identification of patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) in EHRs, which included an assessment of the DQ of the EHR. The five steps methodology is generalizable and reusable in other domains.
