Abstract
The Schiff base fluorescent probe (Dz-Jul), containing julolidine aldehyde and dansyl hydrazine, was derived using a simple condensation. This chemosensor showed high selectivity towards Zn2+ and quick response (170 s) in DMSO/H2O solutions (8/2, v/v, pH 7.2 buffer). A fluorometric titration determined that Dz-Jul-Zn2+ has a binding ratio of 1:1, and the association constant (Ka) is 1.03 × 105 M-1. The Dz-Jul detection limit of Zn2+ ions was 15 nM, much lower than the WHO standard (76.0 nM). DFT, ESI mass, and FTIR spectral demonstrated a plausible complexation mode between Dz-Jul and Zn2+ ions. In actual water samples, Zn2+ has been detected with good detection performance using Dz-Jul. Additionally, Dz-Jul-coated test strips allowed for rapid and qualitative monitoring of Zn2+ ions in a visible manner.

Abstract
Environmental monitoring of mercury (Hg2+) ions has become increasingly important as a result of their detrimental effects on biological organisms at all levels. To recognize toxic metal ions, utmost effort has been devoted to developing new materials that are highly selective, ultra-sensitive, and provide rapid response. In this context, a new chemosensor, 2-imino [N - (N-amido phenyl)]-6-methoxy-3-carbethoxy quinoline (L), has been synthesized by combining 2-formyl-6-methoxy-3-carbethoxy quinoline and benzhydrazide and it has been extensively characterized by NMR, FTIR, ESI-Mass and SCXRD analysis. Probe L has excellent specificity and sensitivity toward Hg2+ ions in semi-aqueous solutions, with a detection limit of 0.185 μM, regardless of the presence of other interfering cations. Chromogenic behavior was demonstrated by the L when it changed the color of the solution from colorless to light yellow, a change that can be observed visually. The probe L forms a 1:1 stochiometric complex with an estimated association constant (Ka) of 6.74 × 104 M-1. The 1H NMR change and density functional theory calculations were analyzed to improve our understanding of the sensing mechanism. Also, an inexpensive and simple paper-based test kit has been developed for the on-site detection of mercury ions in water samples.

Abstract
A designed aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) active fluorescence probe 2,3-Bis-[(2-hydroxy-napthalen-1-ylmethylene)-amino]-but-2-enedinitrile (L) was synthesized via one step condensation method. The probe shows swift sensitivity and selectivity toward Al3+over other relevant metal ions and also exhibits significant AIEE phenomena in methanol/water mixture. Significant enhancement of fluorescence intensity is triggered via chelation-enhanced fluorescence through complex (Al3+-L) formation. A 2:1 metal to ligand ratio is observed from Job's plot based on UV - Vis absorption titration and detection limit (LOD) is found as low as 31.14 nM. Moreover, 1H NMR titrations and fluorescence reversibility by adding Al3+ and EDTA sequentially had been performed to establish the binding site of sensor complex (Al3+-L). Time-resolved photoluminescence, dynamic light scattering, optical microscopy, and on-site visualization studies have been performed to understand the AIEE mechanism of L in different volume percentage of water and methanol mixture. An INHIBIT molecular logic gate has been constructed utilizing the fluorescence behavior of the probe, L in presence of Al3+ and strong chelating ligand EDTA.

Abstract
Zinc is a vital metal element with extensive applications in various fields such as industry, metallurgy, agriculture, food, and healthcare. For living organisms, zinc ions are indispensable, and their deficiency can lead to physiological and metabolic abnormalities that cause multiple diseases. Hence, there is a significant need for selective recognition and effective detection of free zinc ions. As a probe method with high sensitivity, high selectivity, real-time monitoring, safety, harmlessness and ease of operation, fluorescent probes have been widely used in metal ion identification studies, and many convenient, low-cost and easy-to-operate fluorescent probes for Zn2+ detection have been developed. This article reviews the latest research advances in fluorescent chemosensors for Zn2+ detection from 2019 to 2023. In particular, sensors working through photo-induced electron transfer (PET), excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT), intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), chelation-enhanced fluorescence (CHEF), and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) mechanisms are described. We discuss the use of various recognition mechanisms in detecting zinc ions through specific cases, some of which have been validated through theoretical calculations.

Abstract
A diversified biphenyl thiosemicarbazide based chemosensor (HBMC) has been fabricated and reported for the specific detection of Cd2+ in a MeOH : H2O (4 : 1) solution. We observed a chromogenic change from colorless to light yellow colour, and it showed a "turn-on" fluorogenic change from non fluorescent to blooming cyan colour. In fluorometric titration a sharp "turn-on" emission for Cd2+ was observed with a ∼16 fold increase in fluorescence intensity value at 496 nm by incremental addition of Cd2+ ions in the MeOH : H2O (4 : 1) solution. The reversibility of the chemosensor (HBMC) was confirmed by a sequential addition of the EDTA solution. Again the binding stoichiometry of HBMC with Cd2+ was found to be 2 : 1, as confirmed by Job's plot analysis and HRMS spectra of the HBMC-Cd2+ complex. The mechanism for Cd2+ sensing in MeOH : H2O (4 : 1) is based upon the inhibition of CN isomerization and ESIPT process and simultaneously turning on the CHEF (chelation enhanced fluorescence) process. The limit of detection for Cd2+ was found to be in the order of 10-8 (M), which implies that HBMC is an efficient probe to detect Cd2+ at the microscopic level. A reusability study was performed and on-sight detection of cadmium ions by the chemosensor (HBMC) was established by dip-stick experiment. In vitro detection of Cd2+ in human breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231) by HBMC discloses its cell permeability and biocompatible nature. Computational studies (DFT and TDDFT) with the probe HBMC and HBMC-Cd2+ complex were also performed.

Abstract
In this work, a selective chemosensor, (E)-N'-((4-oxo-4H-chromen-3-yl)methylene)isoquinoline-1-carbohydrazide (ENO), was rationally developed for colorimetric and fluorogenic detection of Zn2+ ions. It was readily synthesized from 4-oxo-4H-chromene-3-carbaldehyde and isoquinoline-1-carbohydrazide via one-step Schiff reaction. ENO exhibited excellent fluorescent response performances toward Zn2+ over a wide pH range in EtOH/H2O media, including a distinguished color change from colorless to gold, a low limit of detection (LOD) value (34 nM), strong complexation ability (1.36 × 105 M-1) and rapid identification (2 min). The sensing mechanism of ENO toward Zn2+ was proposed on the basis of the chelation-enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) process, which was further supported by IR studies and the density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Moreover, ENO presented here demonstrated outstanding capability in monitoring trace level of Zn2+ ions in real water samples, living cells as well as the on-site assay kit.

Abstract
The applications of conventional sensors are limited by the long response time, high cost, large detection limit, low sensitivity, complicated usage and low selectivity. These sensors are nowadays replaced by Nanocomposite-based modalities and nanomaterials which are known for their high selectivity and physical and chemical properties. These nanosensors effectively detect heavy metal contaminants in the environment as the discharge of heavy metals into natural water as a result of human activity has become a global epidemic. Exposure to these toxic metals might induce many health-related complications, including kidney failure, brain injury, immune disorders, muscle paleness, cardiac damage, nervous system impairment and limb paralysis. Therefore, designing and developing novel sensing systems for the detection and recognition of these harmful metals in various environmental matrices, particularly water, is of extremely important. Emerging nanotechnological approaches in the past two decades have played a key role in overcoming environmentally-related problems. Nanomaterial-based fabrication of chemical nanosensors has widely been applied as a powerful analytical tool for sensing heavy metals. Portability, high sensitivity, on-site detection capability, better device performance and selectivity are all advantages of these nanosensors. The detection and selectivity have been improved using molecular recognition probes for selective binding on different nanostructures. This study aims to evaluate the sensing properties of various nanomaterials such as metal-organic frameworks, fluorescent materials, metal-based nanoparticles, carbon-based nanomaterials and quantum dots and graphene-based nanomaterials and quantum dots for heavy metal ions recognition. All these nano-architectures are frequently served as effective fluorescence probes to directly (or by modification with some large or small biomolecules) sense heavy metal ions for improved selectivity. However, efforts are still needed for the simultaneous designing of multiple metal ion-based detection systems, exclusively in colorimetric or optical fluorescence nanosensors for heavy metal cations.

Abstract
Optical chemosensors caused a revolution in the field of sensing due to their high specificity, sensitivity, and fast detection features. Imidazole derivatives have offered promising features in the literature as they bear suitable donor/acceptor groups for the selective analytes in the skeleton. In this work, an isoindole-imidazole containing a Schiff base chemosensor (1-{3-[(2-Diethylamino-ethylimino)-methyl]-2-hydroxy-5-methyl-phenyl}-2H-imidazo[5,1-a]isoindole-3,5-dione) was designed and synthesized. The complete sensing phenomena have been investigated by means of UV-Vis, fluorescence, lifetime measurement, FT-IR, NMR and ESI-MS spectroscopic techniques. The optical properties of the synthesized ligand were investigated in 3:7 HEPES buffer:DMSO medium and found to be highly selective and sensitive toward Zn2+ ion through a fluorescence turn-on response with detection limit of 0.073 μm. Furthermore, this response is effective in gel form also. The competition studies reveal that the response of the probe for Zn2+ ion is unaffected by other relevant metal ions. The stoichiometric binding study was performed utilizing Job’s method which indicated a 1:1 sensor–Zn2+ ensemble. Computational calculations were performed to pinpoint the mechanism of sensing.

Abstract
Fused-ring pyrazoles offer a versatile platform for derivitization to give finely tuned and functional ligands in coordination assemblies. Here, we explore the pyrazolo[4,3-b]pyridine (HL1) and pyrazolo[3,4-c]pyridine (HL2) backbones and their N-substituted derivatives, using their coordination chemistry with zinc(II) in the solid state and in solution to examine the steric and electronic effects of varying their substitution pattern. The parent heterocycles HL1 and HL2 both generate robust and permanently porous isomeric MOFs on reaction with zinc and a dicarboxylate co-ligand. The subtle geometric change offered by the position of the backbone pyridyl nitrogen atom leads to substantial changes in the pore size and total pore volume, which is reflected in both their surface areas and CO2 uptake performance. Both materials are also unusually resilient to atmospheric water vapour by virtue of the strong metal-azolate bonding. The isomeric chelating ligands L3-L6, generated by N-arylation of the parent heterocycles with a 2-pyridyl group, each coordinate to zinc to give either mononuclear or polymeric coordination compounds depending on the involvement of the backbone pyridine nitrogen atom. While crystal packing influences based on the steric preferences of the ligands are dominant in the crystalline phase, fluorescence spectroscopy is used to show that the 2H isomers L4 and L6 show distinct coordination behaviour to the 1H isomers L3 and L5, forming competing [ML] and [ML2] species in soution. The first stability constant for L6 with zinc(II) is an order of magnitude larger than for the other three ligands, suggesting an improved binding strength based on the electron configuration in this isomer. These results show that careful control of remote substitution on fused pyrazole ligands can lead to substantial improvements in the stability of the resulting complexes, with consequences for the design of stable coordination assemblies containining labile metal ions.

Abstract
Ions, including anions and heavy metals, are extremely toxic and easily accumulate in the human body, threatening the health of humans and even causing human death at low concentrations. It is therefore necessary to detect these toxic ions in low concentrations in water. Fluorescent sensing is a good method for detecting these ions, but some conventional dyes often exhibit an aggregation caused quench (ACQ) effect in their solid state, limiting their large-scale application. Fluorescent probes based on aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties have received significant attention due to their high fluorescence quantum yields in their nano aggragated states, easy fabrication, use of moderate conditions, and selevtive recognization of organic/inorganic compounds in water with obvious changes in fluorescence. We surmarize the recent advances of AIE-based sensors for low concentration toxic ion detection in water. The detection probes can be divided into three categories: chemical reaction types, chemical interaction types and physical interaction types. Chemical reaction types utilize nucleophilic addition and coordination reaction, while chemical interaction types rely on hydrogen bonding and anion-π interactions. The physical interaction types are composed of electrostatic attractions. We finally comment on the challenges and outlook of AIE-active sensors.

Abstract
A new bifunctional chemosensor HBP ((E)-2-(2-((5-bromopyridin-2-yl)methylene)hydrazinyl) quinoline) based on heterocyclic compounds was designed and studied. The HBP showed successful detecting ability toward cobalt ion with a UV-visible red-shift and a color change of colorless to pink. Moreover, toward zinc ion, the HBP showed an obvious fluorescence turn-on response. The binding ratio of the HBP to cobalt and zinc was a 2 to 1 for both ions. The detection limits were found to be 10 nM for Co2+ and 18 nM for Zn2+. Based on UV-vis and fluorescent spectral variations, Job plots, ESI-MS, FT-IR and calculations, the binding mechanisms of the HBP toward cobalt and zinc ions were proposed.

Abstract
In the present study, a promising optical sensor (TR) was designed, synthesized, characterized and its chemosensing mechanism has been explored through 1H NMR, ESI-MS, UV-Vis absorption and emission spectral studies. This compound exhibits a drastic change in its optical properties when treated with Zn2+, whereas other metal ions do not respond. This provides a naked eye detection for Zn2+ ion. In methanolic medium, Zn2+ ion induces strong fluorescence in TR with large Stokes shifts up to ∼132 nm. A 5-fold increase in fluorescence intensity of TR in presence Zn2+ ion is due to inhibition of ESIPT (Excited State Intramolecular Proton Transfer) and -C=N isomerization with large increase in the ICT (Intramolecular Charge Transfer) character of TR in the excited state. The Job's plot and BH plots reveal the formation of 1: 1 stoichiometry with an estimated binding constant of 3.9 × 107 M-1. The detection limit of TR was found to be 3.85 nM. The TR could be regenerated by adding EDTA solution to the complex formed during interaction. The pH studies indicate that TR could render pH dependent fluorescence measurements in a live physiological environment. Computational technique was used to optimize the structures and the theoretical results are correlated with the experimental results. The possible utilization of TR as bio-imaging fluorescent sensor with 98.57% cell viability to detect Zn2+ in HeLa cells was also explored by fluorescent cell imager.
