Controllable synthesis and bi-functional electrocatalytic performance towards oxygen electrocatalytic reactions of Co3O4 nanoflakes/nitrogen-doped modified CMK-3 nanocomposite

Novel Nanosized Spinel MnCoFeO4 for Low-Temperature Hydrocarbon Oxidation

The present paper reports on MnCoFeO₄ spinels with peculiar composition and their catalytic behavior in the reactions of complete oxidation of hydrocarbons. The samples were synthesized by solution combustion method with sucrose and citric acid as fuels. All samples were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, N₂-physisorption, scanning electron microscopy, thermal analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The catalytic properties of the spinels with Mn:Co:Fe = 1:1:1 composition were studied in reactions of complete oxidation of methane, propane, butane, and propane in the presence of water as model pollutants. Both prepared catalysts are nanosized materials. The slight difference in the compositions, structure, and morphology is due to the type of fuel used in the synthesis reaction. The spinel, prepared with sucrose, shows a higher specific surface area, pore volume, higher amount of small particles fraction, higher thermal stability, and as a result, more exposed active sites on the sample surface that lead to higher catalytic activity in the studied oxidation reactions. After the catalytic tests, both samples do not undergo any substantial phase and morphological changes; thus, they could be applied in low-temperature hydrocarbon oxidation reactions.

Transition metal oxides with perovskite and spinel structures for electrochemical energy production applications

Transition metal oxide-based materials are an interesting alternative to substitute noble-metal based catalyst in energy conversion devices designed for oxygen reduction (ORR), oxygen evolution (OER) and hydrogen evolution reactions (HER). Perovskite (ABO₃) and spinel (AB₂O₄) oxides stand out against other structures due to the possibility of tailoring their chemical composition and, consequently, their properties. Particularly, the electrocatalytic performance of these materials depends on features such as chemical composition, crystal structure, nanostructure, cation substitution level, e_g orbital filling or oxygen vacancies. However, they suffer from low electrical conductivity and surface area, which affects the catalytic response. To mitigate these drawbacks, they have been combined with carbon materials (e.g. carbon black, carbon nanotubes, activated carbon, and graphene) that positively influence the overall catalytic activity. This review provides an overview on tunable perovskites (mainly lanthanum-based) and spinels featuring 3d metal cations such as Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and Cu on octahedral sites, which are known to be active for the electrochemical energy conversion.

Efficient tri-metallic oxides NiCo2O4/CuO for the oxygen evolution reaction

In this study, a simple approach was used to produce nonprecious, earth abundant, stable and environmentally friendly NiCo2O4/CuO composites for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media. The nanocomposites were prepared by a low temperature aqueous chemical growth method. The morphology of the nanostructures was changed from nanowires to porous structures with the addition of CuO. The NiCo2O4/CuO composite was loaded onto a glassy carbon electrode by the drop casting method. The addition of CuO into NiCo2O4 led to reduction in the onset potential of the OER. Among the composites, 0.5 grams of CuO anchored with NiCo2O4 (sample 2) demonstrated a low onset potential of 1.46 V vs. a reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). A current density of 10 mA cm-2 was achieved at an over-potential of 230 mV and sample 2 was found to be durable for 35 hours in alkaline media. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) indicated a small charge transfer resistance of 77.46 ohms for sample 2, which further strengthened the OER polarization curves and indicates the favorable OER kinetics. All of the obtained results could encourage the application of sample 2 in water splitting batteries and other energy related applications.
