Performance of Density Functionals and Semiempirical 3c Methods for Small Gold-Thiolate Clusters

In light of the recent surge in computational studies of gold thiolate clusters, we present a comparison of popular density functionals (DFAs) and three-part corrected methods (3c-methods) on their performance by taking a data set named as AuSR18 consisting of 18 isomers of Au_n(SCH₃)_m (m ≤ n = 1-3). We have compared the efficiency and accuracy of the DFAs and 3c-methods in geometry optimization with RI-SCS-MP2 as the reference method. Similarly, the performance for accurate and efficient energy evaluation was compared with DLPNO-CCSD(T) as the reference method. The lowest energy structure among the isomers of the largest stoichiometry from our data set, AuSR18, i.e., Au₃(SCH₃)₃, is considered to evaluate the computational time for SCF and gradient evaluations. Alongside this, the numbers of optimization steps to locate the most stable minima of Au₃(SCH₃)₃ are compared to assess the efficiency of the methods. A comparison of relevant bond lengths with the reference geometries was made to estimate the accuracy in geometry optimization. Some methods, such as LC-BLYP, ωB97M-D3BJ, M06-2X, and PBEh-3c, could not locate many of the minima found by most of the other methods; thus, the versatility in locating various minima is also an important criterion in choosing a method for the given project. To determine the accuracy of the methods, we compared the relative energies of the isomers in each stoichiometry and the interaction energy of the gold core with the ligands. The dependence of basis set size and relativistic effects on energies are also compared. The following are some of the highlights. TPSS has shown accuracy, while mPWPW shows comparable speed and accuracy. For the relative energies of the clusters, the hybrid range-separated DFAs are the best option. CAM-B3LYP excels, whereas B3LYP performs poorly. Overall, LC-BLYP is a balanced performer considering both the geometry and relative stability of the structures, but it lacks diversity. The 3c-methods, although fast, are less impressive in relative stability.

Gold Clusters: From the Dispute on a Gold Chair to the Golden Future of Nanostructures

The present work opens with an acknowledgement to the research activity performed by Luciana Naldini while affiliated at the Università degli Studi di Sassari (Italy), in particular towards gold complexes and clusters, as a tribute to her outstanding figure in a time and a society where being a woman in science was rather difficult, hoping her achievements could be of inspiration to young female chemists in pursuing their careers against the many hurdles they may encounter. Naldini’s findings will be a key to introduce the most recent results in this field, showing how the chemistry of gold compounds has changed throughout the years, to reach levels of complexity and elegance that were once unimagined. The study of gold complexes and clusters with various phosphine ligands was Naldini’s main field of research because of the potential application of these species in diverse research areas including electronics, catalysis, and medicine. As the conclusion of a vital period of study, here we report Naldini’s last results on a hexanuclear cationic gold cluster, [(PPh₃)₆Au₆(OH)₂]²⁺, having a chair conformation, and on the assumption, supported by experimental data, that it comprises two hydroxyl groups. This contribution, within the fascinating field of inorganic chemistry, provides the intuition of how a simple electron counting may lead to predictable species of yet unknown molecular architectures and formulation, nowadays suggesting interesting opportunities to tune the electronic structures of similar and higher nuclearity species thanks to new spectroscopic and analytical approaches and software facilities. After several decades since Naldini’s exceptional work, the chemistry of the gold cluster has reached a considerable degree of complexity, dealing with new, single-atom precise, materials possessing interesting physico-chemical properties, such as luminescence, chirality, or paramagnetic behavior. Here we will describe some of the most significant contributions.

Modification of screen-printed gold electrode with 1,4-dithiothreitol: application to sensitive voltammetric determination of Sudan II

Objectives

The aim of this study is to investigate the electrochemical behavior of Sudan II (SuII) using a screen-printed gold electrode (SPGE) modified with 1,4-dithiothreitol (DTT) and to determine the amount of Sudan II by voltammetry.

Materials and Methods

A DTT-modified screen-printed gold electrode (DTT/SPGE) was fabricated and its application for differential pulse voltammetric (DPV) determination of SuII was reported. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were used for the characterization of the modified electrode. The effects of instrumental and chemical parameters were optimized for the determination of SuII. The fabricated electrode was used for the analysis of SuII in fortified and real samples. High-performance liquid chromatography was preferred as a reference method for the evaluation of the obtained voltammetric results.

Results

The electrochemical studies and FT-IR demonstrated that the SPGE was modified with DTT. The obtained peak current at DTT/SPGE was 6.67 times higher than that recorded with SPGE. At the optimized conditions of DPV in pH = 2.5 of H2SO4, the oxidation peak current of SuII was proportional to its concentration in range: 0.001–1.500 μmol l–1 with a detection limit of 0.0002 μmol l–1 (S/N = 3). For the analysis of SuII, 101.67%–104.33% of recovery percentage was obtained.

Conclusions

A new electrode was successfully improved for the determination of SuII. This highly selective and sensitive electrode supplied the fast determination of SuII in ketchup, chili sauce and salsa dip sauce. In addition, voltammetric and chromatographic results are found to be consistent.

Versatile one-pot synthesis of gold nanoclusters and nanoparticles using 3,6-(dipyridin-2-yl)-(1,2,4,5)-tetrazine

A one-pot synthesis of gold nano-objects is described by simply mixing a gold salt (HAuCl₄), dodecanethiol and 3,6-di-2-pyridyl-1,2,4,5-tetrazine. When a large excess of thiol is used, gold nanoclusters of 2 nm are obtained in a large amount and with a narrow size distribution. The reaction mechanism was investigated by absorption and emission spectroscopies and shows the in situ formation of dihydrotetrazine acting as the reductant of Au(iii) to make Au(0). Au nanoclusters were isolated from the molecular precursors by HPLC. The nature of the ligands stabilizing Au nanoclusters was investigated by various techniques such as mass spectrometry, SEM-EDS, XPS and NMR. Thiol and tetrazine are shown to play both the role of ligand stabilizing the clusters. Finally, when a much smaller amount of thiol is used, a mixture of Au nanoclusters and Au nanoparticles of 10–15 nm, sometimes aggregated into clusters of 50 nm is obtained. The formation of larger nanoobjects is explained by the lower amount of thiol available to block the growth at the early stage as shown by UV-vis absorption monitoring.

Monochromatic Photolysis to Generate Silver Quantum Clusters in Polymer Matrices with Efficiently Antibio Property

Size-control of species via wavelength to selectively synthesize Ag quantum clusters (QCs) was utilized and the synthesis conditions of this system (AgNO₃, poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) with light) were optimized by changing a variety of parameters. Silver QCs, stabilized by PMAA with different compositions, have been synthesized in aqueous solution by tuning the irradiation monochromatic light wavelengths (300 or 365 nm) and AgNO₃/MAA ratio (1 or 2). The novel preparation procedure has demonstrated a new approach to enlarge the population of the Ag QC family and proved the effectiveness of size control to prepare Ag QCs by tuning the light wavelength. Naked Ag QC species Ag_n (n = 2-9, 11, and 13) in polymer matrices are fully characterized by mass spectrometer, thus providing finger-printing evidence of their presence. Details regarding the photolysis reaction procedure, Ag QC optical properties, and the origins of fluorescence are discussed. Through a combination of results obtained from mass spectroscopy, fluorescence, and time-dependent density functional theory, we can assign the origin of fluorescence from a small silver cluster of Ag₂ in organic scaffolds. The kinetics of the photolysis reaction follows first-order kinetics (k = 0.1/h). After thiolphenol (C₆H₅SH) ligand functionalization of the generated silver clusters in aqueous solution, the low or high resolution mass spectra showed the constant species composites with a molecular formula Ag_nL_n-1 (n = 2-9 and L = C₆H₅S). More evidence indicated the formation of polymer-wrapped silver clusters. Their antibio property was explored, and we confirmed that they indeed show efficient activity.
