Solution combustion synthesized TiO2/Bi2O3/CuO nano-composites and their photocatalytic activity using visible LEDs assisted photoreactor

Comprehensive spectroscopy and photocatalytic activity analysis of TiO2-Pt systems under LED irradiation

This study presents a thorough spectroscopic analysis of TiO2-Pt systems under LED irradiation, with a focus on elucidating the photodeposition process of Pt nanoparticles onto TiO2 surfaces. The methodology leverages an innovative LED photoreactor tailored to a specific spectral range, enabling precise characterization of the excitation spectrum of TiO2-Pt composites. Through the identification of Pt precursor species and their excitation under LED-UV light, a photodeposition mechanism is proposed involving concurrent excitation of both the TiO2 semiconductor and the H2PtCl6 precursor. The LED photoreactors are employed to scrutinize the excitation profile of TiO2-Pt materials, revealing that the incorporation of Pt nanoparticles does not expand TiO2's absorption spectrum. Furthermore, UV-A exposure in the absence of Pt did not induce the formation of surface defects, underscoring the lack of visible light activity in TiO2-Pt systems. Spectroscopic analyses, complemented by naproxen photooxidation experiments, indicate the absence of a significant plasmonic effect in Pt nanoparticles within the experimental framework. Mass spectroscopy results corroborate the presence of distinct naproxen degradation pathways, suggesting minimal influence from photocatalyst properties. This research provides a detailed spectroscopic insight into TiO2-Pt photocatalysis, enriching the knowledge of photocatalytic materials in LED lighting.

Co+2, Ni+2 and Cu+2 incorporated Bi2O3 nano photocatalysts: Synthesis, DFT analysis of band gap modification, adsorption and photodegradation analysis of rhodamine B and Triclopyr

This study deals with the fabrication of metal ion (M = Co+2, Ni+2, and Cu+2) doped- Bi2O3 photocatalysts by solution combustion method. All the synthesized materials were characterized and analysed with the help of XRD, FESEM, EDX, HRTEM, UVDRS, Zeta potential, PL, and LCMS techniques for the structural, morphological, surface charge, optical and degradation pathways characteristics. Synthesized compounds were used for the decontamination (adsorption and degradation) of two organic pollutants namely Rhodamine B and Triclopyr. Adsorption aspects of the pollutants were studied in terms of different isotherm, kinetic and thermodynamic models. Adsorption phenomenon was best fitted with the Freundlich (R2 = 0.992) and Langmuir isotherm (R2 = 0.999) models along with pseudo second order model of kinetics for RhB and TC, respectively. Moreover, the thermodynamic parameters indicated exothermic and endothermic adsorption (ΔH ° (-7.19 kJ/mol) for RhB) and (ΔH ° (52.335 kJ/mol) for TC), respectively. Evaluated negative values of ΔG ° indicated spontaneous adsorption with most favourable at 298 K and 318 K for both the pollutants (RhB and TC) respectively. Modification with metal ions significantly improved the removal efficiency of pure Bi2O3 photocatalyst and followed the trend Co+2/Bi2O3 > Ni+2/Bi2O3 > Cu+2/Bi2O3 > Bi2O3. DFT calculations demonstrate that amongst the doped materials, only Co+2/Bi2O3 is characterized by an indirect band gap; which exhibited efficacious photocatalytic activity. Besides, the highest degradation efficiency was obtained in the case of Co+2/Bi2O3 (2 mol %); being 99.80% for RhB in 30 min and 98.50% for TC in 60 min, respectively. The doped nanostructures lead to higher absorption of visible light and more separation of light-induced charged carriers. Effect of pH of the reaction medium and role of reactive oxygen species was also examined. Finally, a probable mechanism of charge transfer and degradation of the pollutants was also presented.

Developing efficient CuO nanoplate/ZnO nanoparticle hybrid photocatalysts for methylene blue degradation under visible light

CuO/ZnO nanocomposites with different components can overcome the drawbacks of previously used photocatalysts owing to their promotion in charge separation and transportation, light absorption, and the photo-oxidation of dyes. In this study, CuO nanoplates were synthesized by the hydrothermal method, while ZnO nanoparticles were fabricated by the precipitation method. A series of CuO/ZnO nanocomposites with different ZnO-to-CuO weight ratios, namely, 2 : 8, 4 : 6, 5 : 5, 6 : 4, and 8 : 2 were obtained via a mixing process. X-ray diffraction patterns confirmed the presence of hexagonal wurtzite ZnO and monoclinic CuO in the synthesized CuO/ZnO nanocomposites. Scanning electron microscopy showed the dispersion of ZnO nanoparticles on the surface of CuO nanoplates. Ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra exhibited a slight red-shift in the absorption edge of binary oxides relative to pure ZnO or CuO. All samples were employed for the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation. The composite samples exhibited enhanced photocatalytic performance compared with pristine CuO or ZnO. This study aimed to examine the effect of the ZnO-to-CuO weight ratio on their photocatalytic performance. The results indicated that among all the synthesized nanocomposites and pristine oxides, the nanocomposite with ZnO and CuO in a proportion of 4 : 6 shows the highest photodegradation activity for the removal of MB with 93% MB photodegraded within 60 min at an initial MB concentration of 5 ppm. The photocatalytic kinetic data were described well by the pseudo-first-order model with a high correlation coefficient of 0.95. The photocatalytic mechanism of the mixed metal oxide was proposed and discussed in detail. The photodegradation characteristic of CuO/ZnO nanostructures is valuable for methylene blue degradation from aqueous solutions as well as environmental purification in various fields.

Recent advances in synthesis, structural properties, and regulation of nickel sulfide-based heterostructures for environmental water remediation: an insight review

Heterostructured nanomaterials exhibit pronounced potential in environmental science, including the water purification, pollutant monitoring, and environmental remediation. Especially, their application through advanced oxidation processes has been found capable and adaptable in waste water treatment. In semiconductor photocatalysts, metal sulfides are the leading materials. However, for further modifications, the progresses on specific materials need to be overviewed. Among metal sulfides, nickel sulfides are the emerging semiconductors due to relatively narrow band gaps, high thermal and chemical stability, and cost effectiveness. The aim of the present review is to conduct a thorough analysis and summary of recent progress in the application of nickel sulfide-based heterostructures in water decontamination. Initially, the review introduces the emerging needs of the materials for environment following the characteristics features of metal sulfides with emphasis on nickel sulfides. Subsequently, synthesis strategies and structural properties of nickel sulfide (NiS and NiS₂)-based photocatalysts are discussed. Herein, controlled synthesis procedures to influence their active structure, compositions, shape, and size for the enhanced photocatalytic performances are also considered. Furthermore, there is discussion on heterostructures formed by metal modification, metal oxides, and carbon hybridized nanocomposites. In the continuation, the modified characteristics are investigated which favors the photocatalytic processes for degradation of organic contaminations in water. The overall study highlights significant improvements in degradation efficiency of hetero-interfaced NiS and NiS₂ photocatalysts towards organics that are comparable to expensive noble-metal photocatalysts. Finally, we also added a little on prospects for future advancement of nickel sulfide-based photocatalysts for applications in sustainable environmental remediation.

Semiconductors Application Forms and Doping Benefits to Wastewater Treatment: A Comparison of TiO2, WO3, and g-C3N4

Photocatalysis has been vastly applied for the removal of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) and other micropollutants, with the aim of future water reclamation. As a process based upon photon irradiation, materials that may be activated through natural light sources are highly pursued, to facilitate their application and reduce costs. TiO2 is a reference material, and it has been greatly optimized. However, in its typical configuration, it is known to be mainly active under ultraviolet radiation. Thus, multiple alternative visible light driven (VLD) materials have been intensively studied recently. WO3 and g-C3N4 are currently attractive VLD catalysts, with WO3 possessing similarities with TiO2 as a metal oxide, allowing correlations between the knowledge regarding the reference catalyst, and g-C3N4 having an interesting and distinct non-metallic polymeric structure with the benefit of easy production. In this review, recent developments towards CECs degradation in TiO2 based photocatalysis are discussed, as reference catalyst, alongside the selected alternative materials, WO3 and g-C3N4. The aim here is to evaluate the different techniques more commonly explored to enhance catalyst photo-activity, specifically doping with multiple elements and the formation of composite materials. Moreover, the possible combination of photocatalysis and ozonation is also explored, as a promising route to potentialize their individual efficiencies and overcome typical drawbacks.

Solution combustion synthesis: the relevant metrics for producing advanced and nanostructured photocatalysts

The current developments and progress in energy and environment-related areas pay special attention to the fabrication of advanced nanomaterials via green and sustainable paths to accomplish chemical circularity. The design and preparation methods of photocatalysts play a prime role in determining the structural, surface characteristics and optoelectronic properties of the final products. The solution combustion synthesis (SCS) technique is a relatively novel, cost-effective, and efficient method for the bulk production of nanostructured materials. SCS-fabricated metal oxides are of great technological importance in photocatalytic, environmental and energy applications. To date, the SCS route has been employed to produce a large variety of solid materials such as metals, sulfides, carbides, nitrides and single or complex metal oxides. This review intends to provide a holistic perspective of the different steps involved in the chemistry of SCS of advanced photocatalysts, and pursues several SCS metrics that influence their photocatalytic performances to establish a feasible approach to design advanced photocatalysts. The study highlights the fundamentals of SCS and the importance of various combustion parameters in the characteristics of the fabricated photocatalysts. Consequently, this work deals with the design of a concise framework to link the fine adjustment of SCS parameters for the development of efficient metal oxide photocatalysts for energy and environmental applications.
