TiO2/graphene nanocomposite supported on clinoptilolite nanoplate and its enhanced visible light photocatalytic activity

A Review on the Use of Metal Oxide-Based Nanocomposites for the Remediation of Organics-Contaminated Water via Photocatalysis: Fundamentals, Bibliometric Study and Recent Advances

The improper disposal of toxic and carcinogenic organic substances resulting from the manufacture of dyes, drugs and pesticides can contaminate aquatic environments and potable water resources and cause serious damage to animal and human health and to the ecosystem. In this sense, heterogeneous photocatalysis stand out as one effective and cost-effective water depollution technique. The use of metal oxide nanocomposites (MON), from the mixture of two or more oxides or between these oxides and other functional semiconductor materials, have gained increasing attention from researchers and industrial developers as a potential alternative to produce efficient and environmentally friendly photocatalysts for the remediation of water contamination by organic compounds. Thus, this work presents an updated review of the main advances in the use of metal oxide nanocomposites-based photocatalysts for decontamination of water polluted by these substances. A bibliometric analysis allowed to show the evolution of the importance of this research topic in the literature over the last decade. The results of the study also showed that hierarchical and heterogeneous nanostructures of metal oxides, as well as conducting polymers and carbon materials, currently stand out as the main materials for the synthesis of MON, with better photocatalysis performance in the degradation of dyes, pharmaceuticals and pesticides.

Synthesis and characterization of PANI and PANI-indole copolymer and study of their antimalarial and antituberculosis activity

The preparation of polyaniline (PANI) and its copolymer with indole involved a chemical oxidative polymerization method, with benzene sulfonic acid (BSA, C6H6O3S) used as a dopant and potassium persulfate (PPS, K2S2O8) as an oxidant. The synthesized compounds underwent characterization using FTIR, 1H-NMR, TGA, and GPC techniques, which allowed the calculation of their average molecular weight and polydispersity index (PDI) through the GPC technique. The PDI values of the PANI copolymer with indole in different aniline-to-indole ratios were 1.53, 1.13, and 1.532 for 1:1, 1:2, and 2:1 ratios, respectively. Thermal stability was determined using TGA, revealing that the indole heterocyclic compound increased the inflexibility of the polymer chains in the synthesized PANI copolymer. The structure of the copolymer was further analyzed using 1HNMR and FTIR techniques, which confirmed the existence of benzenoid and quinoid groups in the PANI-indole copolymers, as well as the effect of doping on the polymer chains. The antibacterial and antifungal properties of the copolymers were studied against several bacterial and fungal strains and measured in terms of minimum inhibitory concentration. Results indicated that the inhibition rate of the PANI-indole copolymer on S. pyogenus (MTCC 442) was higher than that of standard drugs and individual PANI. The PANI-indole copolymers also displayed excellent antituberculosis and antimalarial activities, with the synthesized copolymer showing better outcomes than individual PANI.

Genome-wide association study for single nucleotide polymorphism associated with mural and cumulus granulosa cells of PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) and non-PCOS patients

Background

The genetic make-up of local granulosa cells and their function in the pathophysiology of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is crucial to a full comprehension of the disorder. The major purpose of this study was to compare the Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) of cumulus granulosa cells (CGCs) and mural granulosa cells (MGCs) between healthy individuals and women with PCOS using genome-wide association analysis (GWA). A case–control study was conducted in a total of 24 women diagnosed with PCOS and 24 healthy non-PCOS women of reproductive age aggregated into 4 samples of 6 patients each. GWA studies entail several processes, such as cell separation, cellular DNA extraction, library preparation followed by interpretation using bioinformatics databases. SNP locations were identified by reference gene also involves the use of Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry (MS) (MALDI-TOF-MS) for the first sorting. Hybridization with the gene chip was followed by reading the SNP genotypes according to the publications in the literature. TASSEL (Trait Analysis by aSSociation, Evolution and Linkage) program and methods were used for GWA studies.

Results

An aggregate of 21,039 SNP calls were obtained from our samples. Genes of autoimmune illnesses, obesity, inflammatory illnesses, nervous system diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa, autism, neural tube defects, and Alzheimer's disease; and various malignancies such as lung cancer, colorectal cancer, breast cancer were also identified in these cells. Gene ranking score reveals that granulosa cells carry key genes of neurological system and reproductive systems especially in brain and testis, respectively.

Conclusions

Mural and Cumulus Granulosa cells were shown to have the PCOS directly and indirectly related genes MMP9, PRKAA2, COMT and HP. We found that the expression of ARID4B, MUC5AC, NID2, CREBBP, GNB1, KIF2C, COL18A1, and HNRNPC by these cells may contribute to PCOS.

Hydrophobic and oleophilic open-cell foams from in-situ microfibrillation blends of poly(lactic acid) and polytetrafluoroethylene: Selective oil-adsorption behaviors

Confronted with severe water contamination induced by the spillage of oils, seeking oil-selective adsorbent to recover oil from oily wastewater is extremely urgent. In particular, the functionalized polymer foams with open-cell structures are highly promising oil-selective adsorbent. Herein, a simple, effective and green method was presented to prepare open-cell poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) foams with selective oil-adsorption behaviors via melt blending and supercritical CO₂ batch foaming technique. The introduction of PTFE had a distinct positive influence on the melt viscoelasticity and crystallization performances of various PLA specimens. The resulted PLA/PTFE4 foam with a volume expansion ratio of 10.17 ± 0.93 and a cell density of 1.58 × 10⁸ cells/cm³ possessed the highest open-cell content of 90.81 ± 0.78 %. Meanwhile, PLA/PTFE4 foam revealed oil/water selective adsorption capacity of 1.2-6.1 g/g for various organic solvents and oils. The adsorption capacity of PLA/PTFE4 foam for CCl₄ exhibited no significant decrement during ten adsorption-desorption cycles. This research offered a guideline for the manufacture of green environmental open-cell polymer foams for oil-selective adsorption.

Preparation and modification methods of defective titanium dioxide-based nanoparticles for photocatalytic wastewater treatment-a comprehensive review

The rapid population growth and industrial expansion worldwide have created serious water contamination concerns. To curb the pollution issue, it has become imperative to use a versatile material for the treatment. Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) has been recognized as the most-studied nanoparticle in various fields of science and engineering due to its availability, low cost, efficiency, and other fascinating properties with a wide range of applications in modern technology. Recent studies revealed the photocatalytic activity of the material for the treatment of industrial effluents to promote environmental sustainability. With the wide band gap energy of 3.2 eV, TiO₂ can be activated under UV light; thus, many strategies have been proposed to extend its photoabsorption to the visible light region. In what follows, this has generated increasing attention to study its characteristics and structural modifications in different forms for photocatalytic applications. The present review provides an insight into the understanding of the synthesis methods of TiO₂, the current progress in the treatment techniques for the degradation of wide environmental pollutants employing modified TiO₂ nanoparticles, and the factors affecting its photocatalytic activities. Further, recent developments in using titania for practical applications, the approach for designing novel nanomaterials, and the prospects and opportunities in this exciting area have been discussed.

Clean energy and (E)SG investing from energy and environmental linkages

The objectives of this study are to analyze the presence of environmental values in ESG indexes based on the positive value relationship between energy and the environment found in existing studies and to identify the characteristics of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) investments by examining the performance of ESG investments compared to market portfolios, as well as to consider the implications of ESG investment in clean energy policy based on the results of the empirical analysis of this study. This paper contributes threefold. First, using a supply and demand-based pricing model, we propose a new model of the expected return, risk, and performance ratio of the ESG premiums defined by the log price differences between ESG indexes and a market portfolio to analyze how ESG investments perform. Second, based on the empirical findings of this study that the correlation between ESG indexes and energy prices is a decreasing function of the latter in contrast to other environmental assets, this paper suggests that ESG indexes cannot adequately demonstrate environmental values but reflect social and governance values, i.e., (E)SG, in the complementary perspective. Third, using the empirical findings of this study that the information ratio of the ESG premium tends to be positive but declines and approaches zero over time, this paper indicates that although ESG investments can be significant compared to market index investments, the significance is limited because ESG investment performance converges with market portfolio performance. In conclusion, two points should be noted about ESG investing in clean energy policy: given the dilution of environmental values in ESG investing, a clear distinction should be made between ESG investing and renewable energy investing; even if investments in renewable energy projects are treated as ESG investments, reflecting current market trends, we should be prepared for the fact that the superior investment performance due to social and governance values, rather than environmental values, will not last long.
