A Lightweight and Efficient Method of Structural Damage Detection Using Stochastic Configuration Network

With the advancement of neural networks, more and more neural networks are being applied to structural health monitoring systems (SHMSs). When an SHMS requires the integration of numerous neural networks, high-performance and low-latency networks are favored. This paper focuses on damage detection based on vibration signals. In contrast to traditional neural network approaches, this study utilizes a stochastic configuration network (SCN). An SCN is an incrementally learning network that randomly configures appropriate neurons based on data and errors. It is an emerging neural network that does not require predefined network structures and is not based on gradient descent. While SCNs dynamically define the network structure, they essentially function as fully connected neural networks that fail to capture the temporal properties of monitoring data effectively. Moreover, they suffer from inference time and computational cost issues. To enable faster and more accurate operation within the monitoring system, this paper introduces a stochastic convolutional feature extraction approach that does not rely on backpropagation. Additionally, a random node deletion algorithm is proposed to automatically prune redundant neurons in SCNs, addressing the issue of network node redundancy. Experimental results demonstrate that the feature extraction method improves accuracy by 30% compared to the original SCN, and the random node deletion algorithm removes approximately 10% of neurons.

Greengage Grading Method Based on Dynamic Feature and Ensemble Networks

To overcome the deficiencies of the traditional open-loop cognition method, which lacks evaluation of the cognitive results, a novel cognitive method for greengage grading based on dynamic feature and ensemble networks is explored in this paper. First, a greengage grading architecture with an adaptive feedback mechanism based on error adjustment is constructed to imitate the human cognitive mechanism. Secondly, a dynamic representation model for convolutional feature space construction of a greengage image is established based on the entropy constraint indicators, and the bagging classification network for greengage grading is built based on stochastic configuration networks (SCNs) to realize a hierarchical representation of the greengage features and enhance the generalization of the classifier. Thirdly, an entropy-based error model of the cognitive results for greengage grading is constructed to describe the optimal cognitive problem from an information perspective, and then the criteria and mechanism for feature level and feature efficiency regulation are given out within the constraint of cognitive error entropy. Finally, numerous experiments are performed on the collected greengage images. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of our method, especially for the classification of similar samples, compared with the existing open-loop algorithms.

Defect Classification of Green Plums Based on Deep Learning

The green plum is rich in amino acids, lipids, inorganic salts, vitamins, and trace elements. It has high nutritional value and medicinal value and is very popular among Chinese people. However, green plums are susceptible to collisions and pests during growth, picking, storage, and transportation, causing surface defects, affecting the quality of green plums and their products and reducing their economic value. In China, defect detection and grading of green plum products are still performed manually. Traditional manual classification has low accuracy and high cost, which is far from meeting the production needs of green plum products. In order to improve the economic value of green plums and their products and improve the automation and intelligence level of the product production process, this study adopted deep learning methods based on a convolutional neural network and cost-effective computer vision technology to achieve efficient classification of green plum defects. First, a camera and LEDs were used to collect 1240 green plum images of RGB, and the green plum experimental classification standard was formulated and divided into five categories, namely, rot, spot, scar, crack, and normal. Images were randomly divided into a training set and test set, and the number of images of the training set was expanded. Then, the stochastic weight averaging (SWA) optimizer and w-softmax loss function were used to improve the VGG network, which was trained and tested to generate a green plum defect detection network model. The average recognition accuracy of green plum defects was 93.8%, the test time for each picture was 84.69 ms, the recognition rate of decay defect was 99.25%, and the recognition rate of normal green plum was 95.65%. The results were compared with the source VGG network, resnet18 network, and green lemon network. The results show that for the classification of green plum defects, the recognition accuracy of the green plum defect detection network increased by 9.8% and 16.6%, and the test speed is increased by 1.87 and 6.21 ms, respectively, which has certain advantages.

FPGA-Based Implementation of Stochastic Configuration Networks for Regression Prediction

The implementation of neural network regression prediction based on digital circuits is one of the challenging problems in the field of machine learning and cognitive recognition, and it is also an effective way to relieve the pressure of the Internet in the era of intelligence. As a nonlinear network, the stochastic configuration network (SCN) is considered to be an effective method for regression prediction due to its good performance in learning and generalization. Therefore, in this paper, we adapt the SCN to regression analysis, and design and verify the field programmable gate array (FPGA) framework to implement SCN model for the first time. In addition, in order to improve the performance of the SCN model based on the FPGA, the implementation of the nonlinear activation function on the FPGA is optimized, which effectively improves the prediction accuracy while considering the utilization rate of hardware resources. Experimental results based on the simulation data set and the real data set prove that the proposed FPGA framework successfully implements the SCN regression prediction model, and the improved SCN model has higher accuracy and a more stable performance. Compared with the extreme learning machine (ELM), the prediction performance of the proposed SCN implementation model based on the FPGA for the simulation data set and the real data set is improved by 56.37% and 17.35%, respectively.
