Mixed language queries in online searches

Purpose

With the increasing number of online multilingual resources, cross-language information retrieval (CLIR) has drawn much attention from the information retrieval (IR) research community. However, few studies have examined how and why multilingual searchers seek information in two or more languages, specifically how they switch and mix language in queries to get satisfying results. The purpose of this paper is to focus on Chinese–English bilinguals’ intra-sentential code-switching behaviors in online searches. The scenarios and reasons of code-switching, factors that may affect code-switching, the patterns of mixed language query formulation and reformulation and how current IR systems and other search tools can facilitate such information needs were examined.

Design/methodology/approach

In-depth semi-structured interviews were used as the research method. In total, 30 participants were recruited based on their English proficiency, location and profession, using a purposive sampling method.

Findings

Four scenarios and four reasons for using Chinese–English mixed language queries to cover information needs were identified, and results suggest that linguistic and cultural/social factors are of equivalent importance in code-switching behaviors. English terms and Chinese terms in queries play different roles in searches, and mixed language queries are irreplaceable by either single language queries or other search facilitating features. Findings also suggest current search engines and tools need greater emphasis in the user interface and more user education is required.

Originality/value

This study presents a qualitative analysis of bilinguals’ code-switching behaviors in online searches. Findings are expected to advance the theoretical understanding of bilingual users’ search strategies and interactions with IR systems, and provide insights for designing more effective IR systems and tools to discover multilingual online resources, including cross-language controlled vocabularies, personalized CLIR tools and mixed language query assistants.

Power Law Distributions in Information Retrieval

Several properties of information retrieval (IR) data, such as query frequency or document length, are widely considered to be approximately distributed as a power law. This common assumption aims to focus on specific characteristics of the empirical probability distribution of such data (e.g., its scale-free nature or its long/fat tail). This assumption, however, may not be always true. Motivated by recent work in the statistical treatment of power law claims, we investigate two research questions: (i) To what extent do power law approximations hold for term frequency, document length, query frequency, query length, citation frequency, and syntactic unigram frequency? And (ii) what is the computational cost of replacing ad hoc power law approximations with more accurate distribution fitting? We study 23 TREC and 5 non-TREC datasets and compare the fit of power laws to 15 other standard probability distributions. We find that query frequency and 5 out of 24 term frequency distributions are best approximated by a power law. All remaining properties are better approximated by the Inverse Gaussian, Generalized Extreme Value, Negative Binomial, or Yule distribution. We also find the overhead of replacing power law approximations by more informed distribution fitting to be negligible, with potential gains to IR tasks like index compression or test collection generation for IR evaluation.

Development and validation of Hong Kong Rapid Estimate of Adult Literacy in Dentistry

AIM

To develop and validate an instrument, the Hong Kong Rapid Estimate of Adult Literacy in Dentistry (HKREALD-30).

METHODS

The Rapid Estimate of Adult Literacy in Dentistry (REALD-99) was translated into Chinese and modified in the pretest. A total of 200 parents of pediatric dental patients were interviewed using this modified scale and administered additional three sets of self-reported questionnaires. The 99 items of the scale were reduced to 30 (HKREALD-30). Concurrent validity was tested by comparing the HKREALD-30 scores with the participants' educational level, pattern of dental visits and reading habits. Convergent validity was tested by examining the association between HKREALD-30 and the Test of Functional Health Literacy in Dentistry (TOFHLiD). The test-retest reliability and internal consistency of HKREALD-30 were also evaluated.

RESULTS

A significant correlation (P < 0.01) was found between HKREALD-30 and participants' reading habits. HKREALD-30 was also highly correlated with TOFHLiD (Spearman's rho = 0.693, P < 0.01). In the regression model, HKREALD-30 was positively associated with TOFHLiD (P < 0.05) after controlling for participants' characteristics. The intra-class correlation coefficient of HKREALD-30 was 0.78 and the Cronbach's alpha was 0.84.

CONCLUSION

Initial testing of HKREALD-30 suggested that it is a valid and reliable instrument for the basic screening of oral health literacy among Chinese people in Hong Kong.
