Prediction of Freezing of Gait in Parkinson's disease based on multi-channel time-series neural network

Freezing of Gait (FOG) is a noticeable symptom of Parkinson's disease, like being stuck in place and increasing the risk of falls. The wearable multi-channel sensor system is an efficient method to predict and monitor the FOG, thus warning the wearer to avoid falls and improving the quality of life. However, the existing approaches for the prediction of FOG mainly focus on a single sensor system and cannot handle the interference between multi-channel wearable sensors. Hence, we propose a novel multi-channel time-series neural network (MCT-Net) approach to merge multi-channel gait features into a comprehensive prediction framework, alerting patients to FOG symptoms in advance. Owing to the causal distributed convolution, MCT-Net is a real-time method available to give optimal prediction earlier and implemented in remote devices. Moreover, intra-channel and inter-channel transformers of MCT-Net extract and integrate different sensor position features into a unified deep learning model. Compared with four other state-of-the-art FOG prediction baselines, the proposed MCT-Net obtains 96.21% in accuracy and 80.46% in F1-score on average 2 s before FOG occurrence, demonstrating the superiority of MCT-Net.

A combined method of optimized learning vector quantization and neuro-fuzzy techniques for predicting unified Parkinson's disease rating scale using vocal features

Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a common disorder of the central nervous system. The Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale or UPDRS is commonly used to track PD symptom progression because it displays the presence and severity of symptoms. To model the relationship between speech signal properties and UPDRS scores, this study develops a new method using Neuro-Fuzzy (ANFIS) and Optimized Learning Rate Learning Vector Quantization (OLVQ1). ANFIS is developed for different Membership Functions (MFs). The method is evaluated using Parkinson's telemonitoring dataset which includes a total of 5875 voice recordings from 42 individuals in the early stages of PD which comprises 28 men and 14 women. The dataset is comprised of 16 vocal features and Motor-UPDRS, and Total-UPDRS. The method is compared with other learning techniques. The results show that OLVQ1 combined with the ANFIS has provided the best results in predicting Motor-UPDRS and Total-UPDRS. The lowest Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) values (UPDRS (Total)=0.5732; UPDRS (Motor)=0.5645) and highest R-squared values (UPDRS (Total)=0.9876; UPDRS (Motor)=0.9911) are obtained by this method. Parkinson’s disease detection based on multi-pattern analysis and multi-scale convolutional neural networks

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a complex neurodegenerative disease. At present, the early diagnosis of PD is still extremely challenging, and there is still a lack of consensus on the brain characterization of PD, and a more efficient and robust PD detection method is urgently needed. In order to further explore the features of PD based on brain activity and achieve effective detection of PD patients (including OFF and ON medications), in this study, a multi-pattern analysis based on brain activation and brain functional connectivity was performed on the brain functional activity of PD patients, and a novel PD detection model based on multi-scale convolutional neural network (MCNN) was proposed. Based on the analysis of power spectral density (PSD) and phase-locked value (PLV) features of multiple frequency bands of two independent resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) datasets, we found that there were significant differences in PSD and PLV between HCs and PD patients (including OFF and ON medications), especially in the β and γ bands, which were very effective for PD detection. Moreover, the combined use of brain activation represented by PSD and functional connectivity patterns represented by PLV can effectively improve the performance of PD detection. Furthermore, our proposed MCNN model shows great potential for automatic PD detection, with cross-validation accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve all above 99%. Our study may help to further understand the characteristics of PD and provide new ideas for future PD diagnosis based on spontaneous EEG activity.
