Optimizing Group Transfer Catalysis by Copper Complex with Redox-Active Ligand in an Entatic State

Position of substituents directs the electron transfer properties of entatic state complexes: new insights from guanidine-quinoline copper complexes

In a previous study, we showed that the properties and the ability as an entatic state model of copper guanidine quinoline complexes are significantly influenced by a methyl or methyl ester substituent in the 2-position. To prove the importance of the 2-position of the substituent, two novel guanidine quinoline ligands with a methyl or methyl ester substituent in the 4-position and the corresponding copper complexes were synthesized and characterized in this study. The influence of the substituent position on the copper complexes was investigated with various experimental and theoretical methods. The molecular structures of the copper complexes were examined in the solid state by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) and by density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicating a strong dependency on the substituent position compared to the systems substituted in the 2-position from the previous study. Further, the significantly different influence on the donor properties in dependency on the substituent position was analyzed with natural bond orbital (NBO) calculations. By the determination of the redox potentials, the impact on the electrochemical stabilization was examined. With regard to further previously analyzed guanidine quinoline copper complexes, the electrochemical stabilization was correlated with the charge-transfer energies calculated by NBO analysis and ground state energies, revealing the substituent influence and enabling a comparatively easy and accurate possibility for the theoretical calculation of the relative redox potential. Finally, the electron transfer properties were quantified by determining the electron self-exchange rates via the Marcus theory and by theoretical calculation of the reorganization energies via Nelsen's four-point method. The results gave important insights into the dependency between the ability of the copper complexes as entatic state model and the type and position of the substituent.

Light Induced Cobalt(III) Carbene Radical Formation from Dimethyl Malonate As Carbene Precursor

Radical-type carbene transfer catalysis is an efficient method for the direct functionalization of C-H and C=C bonds. However, carbene radical complexes are currently formed via high-energy carbene precursors, such as diazo compounds or iodonium ylides. Many of these carbene precursors require additional synthetic steps, have an explosive nature, or generate halogenated waste. Consequently, the utilization of carbene radical catalysis is limited by specific carbene precursors that access the carbene radical intermediate. In this study, we generate a cobalt(III) carbene radical complex from dimethyl malonate, which is commercially available and bench-stable. EPR and NMR spectroscopy were used to identify the intermediates and showed that the cobalt(III) carbene radical complex is formed upon light irradiation. In the presence of styrene, carbene transfer occurred, forming cyclopropane as the product. With this photochemical method, we demonstrate that dimethyl malonate can be used as an alternative carbene precursor in the formation of a cobalt(III) carbene radical complex.

Copper-Mediated Cyclization of Terminal Alkynes with CF3-Imidoyl Sulfoxonium Ylides To Construct 5-Trifluoromethylpyrroles

A copper-mediated [3 + 2] cyclization of CF3-imidoyl sulfoxonium ylides and terminal alkynes has been demonstrated. This work provides a practical approach for assembling 5-trifluoromethylpyrroles with the merits of a broad substrate scope, good functional tolerance, and mild reaction conditions. Control experiments and DFT studies indicate that this reaction may involve the addition of π-bonds of terminal alkynes by copper-carbene radicals and hydrogen migration.

Electron transfer catalysis mediated by 3d complexes of redox non-innocent ligands possessing an azo function: a perspective

It was first reported almost two decades ago that ligands with azo functions are capable of accepting electron(s) upon coordination to produce azo-anion radical complexes, thereby exhibiting redox non-innocence. Over the past two decades, there have been numerous reports of such complexes along with their structures and diverse characteristics. The ability of a coordinated azo function to accept one or more electron(s), thereby acting as an electron reservoir, is currently employed to carry out electron transfer catalysis since they can undergo redox transformation at mild potentials due to the presence of energetically accessible energy levels. The cooperative involvement of redox non-innocent ligand(s) containing an azo group and the coordinated metal centre can adjust and modulate the Lewis acidity of the latter through selective ligand-centred redox events, thereby manipulating the capacity of the metal centre to bind to the substrate. We have summarized the list of first row transition metal complexes of iron, cobalt, nickel, copper and zinc with redox non-innocent ligands incorporating an azo function that have been exploited as electron transfer catalysts to effectuate sustainable synthesis of a wide variety of useful chemicals. These include ketazines, pyrimidines, benzothiazole, benzoxazoles, N-acyl hydrazones, quinazoline-4(3)H-ones, C-3 alkylated indoles, N-alkylated anilines and N-alkylated heteroamines. The reaction pathways, as demonstrated by catalytic loops, reveal that the azo function of a coordinated ligand can act as an electron sink in the initial steps to bring about alcohol oxidation and thereafter, they serve as an electron pool to produce the final products either via HAT or PCET processes.

Optically active bis(aminophenols) and their metal complexes

Optically active C2-symmetric bis(aminophenols) based on (R)-2,2'-diaminobinaphthyl (BiniqH4) and (R,R)-2,3-butanediyldianthranilate (BdanH4) have been prepared by condensation of the diamines with 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol. Group 10 bis(iminosemiquinone) complexes (R)-(Biniq)M (M = Pd, Pt) and (C,R,R)-(Bdan)Pd have been prepared by oxidatively metalating the corresponding ligands. In (R)-(Biniq)M, the C2 axis passes through the approximate square plane of the bis(iminosemiquinone)metal core, while in (C,R,R)-(Bdan)Pd the C2 axis is perpendicular to this plane. In the latter compound, the (R,R)-butanediyl strap binds selectively over one enantioface of the metal complex in a conformation where the methyl groups are anti to one another. Osmium oxo complexes with the intrinsically chiral OsO(amidophenoxide)2 chromophore are obtained by metalation of OsO(OCH2CH2O)2 with (R,R)-BdanH4. Both the (A,R,R) and (C,R,R) diastereomers can be observed, with metalation in refluxing toluene selectively giving the latter isomer. The electronic structures of the complexes are illuminated by the circular dichroism spectra, in conjuction with the optical spectra and TDDFT calculations.

Carbene Radicals in Transition-Metal-Catalyzed Reactions

Discovered as organometallic curiosities in the 1970s, carbene radicals have become a staple in modern-day homogeneous catalysis. Carbene radicals exhibit nucleophilic radical-type reactivity orthogonal to classical electrophilic diamagnetic Fischer carbenes. Their successful catalytic application has led to the synthesis of a myriad of carbo- and heterocycles, ranging from simple cyclopropanes to more challenging eight-membered rings. The field has matured to employ densely functionalized chiral porphyrin-based platforms that exhibit high enantio-, regio-, and stereoselectivity. Thus far the focus has largely been on cobalt-based systems, but interest has been growing for the past few years to expand the application of carbene radicals to other transition metals. This Perspective covers the advances made since 2011 and gives an overview on the coordination chemistry, reactivity, and catalytic application of carbene radical species using transition metal complexes and catalysts.

Manipulating electron transfer - the influence of substituents on novel copper guanidine quinolinyl complexes

Copper guanidine quinolinyl complexes act as good entatic state models due to their distorted structures leading to a high similarity between Cu(i) and Cu(ii) complexes. For a better understanding of the entatic state principle regarding electron transfer a series of guanidine quinolinyl ligands with different substituents in the 2- and 4-position were synthesized to examine the influence on the electron transfer properties of the corresponding copper complexes. Substituents with different steric or electronic influences were chosen. The effects on the properties of the copper complexes were studied applying different experimental and theoretical methods. The molecular structures of the bis(chelate) copper complexes were examined in the solid state by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and in solution by X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealing a significant impact of the substituents on the complex structures. For a better insight natural bond orbital (NBO) calculations of the ligands and copper complexes were performed. The electron transfer was analysed by the determination of the electron self-exchange rates following Marcus theory. The obtained results were correlated with the results of the structural analysis of the complexes and of the NBO calculations. Nelsen's four-point method calculations give a deeper understanding of the thermodynamic properties of the electron transfer. These studies reveal a significant impact of the substituents on the properties of the copper complexes.

Heteroligand Metal Complexes with Extended Redox Properties Based on Redox-Active Chelating Ligands of o-Quinone Type and Ferrocene

A combination of different types of redox-active systems in one molecule makes it possible to create coordination compounds with extended redox abilities, combining molecular and electronic structures determined by the features of intra- and intermolecular interactions between such redox-active centres. This review summarizes and analyses information from the literature, published mainly from 2000 to the present, on the methods of preparation, the molecular and electronic structure of mixed-ligand coordination compounds based on redox-active ligands of the o-benzoquinone type and ferrocenes, ferrocene-containing ligands, the features of their redox properties, and some chemical behaviour.

Hierarchical cage-frame type nanostructure of CeO2 for bio sensing applications: from glucose to protein detection

Self-assembled hierarchical nanostructures are slowly superseding their conventional counterparts for use in biosensors. These morphologies show high surface area with tunable porosity and packing density. Modulating the interfacial interactions and subsequent particle assembly occurring at the water-and-oil interface in inverse miniemulsions, are amongst the best strategies to stabilize various type of hollow nanostructures. The paper presents a successful protocol to obtain CeO₂ hollow structures based biosensors that are useful for glucose to protein sensing. The fabricated glucose sensor is able to deliver high sensitivity (0.495 μA cm^-2 nM^-1), low detection limit (6.46 nM) and wide linear range (0 nM to 600 nM). CeO₂ based bioelectrode can also be considered as a suitable candidate for protein sensors. It can detect protein concentrations varying from 0 to 30 µM, which is similar or higher than most reports in the literature. The limit of detection (LOD) for protein was ∼0.04 µM. Therefore, the hollow CeO₂ electrodes, with excellent reproducibility, stability and repeatability, open a new area of application for cage-frame type particles.

Biological concepts for catalysis and reactivity: empowering bioinspiration

Biological systems provide attractive reactivity blueprints for the design of challenging chemical transformations. Emulating the operating mode of natural systems may however not be so easy and direct translation of structural observations does not always afford the anticipated efficiency. Metalloenzymes rely on earth-abundant metals to perform an incredibly wide range of chemical transformations. To do so, enzymes in general have evolved tools and tricks to enable control of such reactivity. The underlying concepts related to these tools are usually well-known to enzymologists and bio(inorganic) chemists but may be a little less familiar to organometallic chemists. So far, the field of bioinspired catalysis has greatly focused on the coordination sphere and electronic effects for the design of functional enzyme models but might benefit from a paradigm shift related to recent findings in biological systems. The goal of this review is to bring these fields closer together as this could likely result in the development of a new generation of highly efficient bioinspired systems. This contribution covers the fields of redox-active ligands, entatic state reactivity, energy conservation through electron bifurcation, and quantum tunneling for C-H activation.

Copper catalysis with redox-active ligands

Copper catalysis finds applications in various synthetic fields by utilizing the ability of copper to sustain mono- and bielectronic elementary steps. Further to the development of well-defined copper complexes with classical ligands such as phosphines and N-heterocyclic carbenes, a new and fast-expanding area of research is exploring the possibility of a complementing metal-centered reactivity with electronic participation by the coordination sphere. To achieve this electronic flexibility, redox-active ligands can be used to engage in a fruitful “electronic dialogue” with the metal center, and provide additional venues for electron transfer. This review aims to present the latest results in the area of copper-based cooperative catalysis with redox-active ligands.
