Thermal Effect on Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting Toward Highly Solar to Hydrogen Efficiency

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen production is an emerging technology that uses renewable solar light aimed to establish a sustainable carbon-neutral society. The barriers to commercialization are low efficiency and high cost. To date, researchers have focused on materials and systems. However, recent studies have been conducted to utilize thermal effects in PEC hydrogen production. This Review provides a fresh perspective to utilize the thermal effects for PEC performance enhancement while delineating the underlying principles and equations associated with efficiency. The fundamentals of the thermal effect on the PEC system are summarized from various perspectives: kinetics, thermodynamics, and empirical equations. Based on this, materials are classified as plasmonic metals, quantum dot-based semiconductors, and photothermal organic materials, which have an inherent response to photothermal irradiation. Finally, the economic viability and challenges of these strategies for PEC are explained, which can pave the way for the future progress in the field.

Green Thermo-Photo Catalytic Production of Syngas Using Pd/Nb-TiO2 Catalysts

In this contribution, a series of Pd-promoted Nb-doped titania samples were essayed in the gas-phase thermo-photo production of syngas from methanol/water mixtures. The Pd loading was tested in the 0.1 to 2.5 wt % range, leading to the presence of metallic nanoparticles under reaction. Reaction rates exceeding 52 mmol H₂ g^-1 h^-1 and quantum efficiencies above 33% were obtained. The optimum sample having a 0.5 wt % of Pd provided an outstanding synergy between light and heat under reaction conditions, facilitating the boost of activity with respect to the single-source processes and achieving high selectivity to syngas. The spectroscopic analysis of the physico-chemical ground of the activity unveiled that the noble metal interaction with the Nb-doped anatase support triggers a cooperative effect, promoting the evolution of formic acid-type methanol-derived carbon-containing species and rendering a significant enhancement of syngas production. The proposed thermo-photo system is thus a firm candidate to contribute to the new green circular economy.

Photothermal Chemistry Based on Solar Energy: From Synergistic Effects to Practical Applications

With the development of society, energy shortage and environmental problems have become more and more outstanding. Solar energy is a clean and sustainable energy resource, potentially driving energy conversion and environmental remediation reactions. Thus, solar-driven chemistry is an attractive way to solve the two problems. Photothermal chemistry (PTC) is developed to achieve full-spectral utilization of the solar radiation and drive chemical reactions more efficiently under relatively mild conditions. In this review, the mechanisms of PTC are summarized from the aspects of thermal and non-thermal effects, and then the interaction and synergy between these two effects are sorted out. In this paper, distinguishing and quantifying these two effects is discussed to understand PTC processes better and to design PTC catalysts more methodically. However, PTC is still a little far away from practical. Herein, several key points, which must be considered when pushing ahead with the engineering application of PTC, are proposed, along with some workable suggestions on the practical application. This review provides a unique perspective on PTC, focusing on the synergistic effects and pointing out a possible direction for practical application.

Simultaneous removal of organic pollutants and heavy metals in wastewater by photoelectrocatalysis: A review

As a powerful technique by combining photocatalysis with electrochemistry, photoelectrocatalysis has been extensively explored to simultaneously remove mixed pollutants of organic and heavy metal in wastewater in the past decade. In the photoelectrocatalytic system, the bias potential can remarkably promote the oxidation of organic pollutants on the photoanode by suppressing the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and extending the lifetime of photogenerated holes. Meanwhile, some photogenerated electrons are driven by the bias potential to the cathode to reduce heavy metals. In this review, we summarize the research advances in photoelectrocatalytic treatment of organic-heavy metal mixed pollution systems under UV light, visible light and sunlight. We demonstrate the main operation variables affecting the photoelectrocatalytic removal processes of organic pollutants and heavy metals. The problems for utilization of solar energy in photoelectrocatalysis are discussed. Finally, this review proposes the perspectives for future development of photoelectrocatalysis to industrial applications.
