Ultrafine CoP/Co2P Nanorods Encapsulated in Janus/Twins-type Honeycomb 3D Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanosheets for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution

Biologically templated formation of Cobalt-Phosphide-Graphene hybrids with charge redistribution for efficient hydrogen evolution

Developing highly efficient and sustainable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts is important for the practical application of emerging energy technologies. The spherical structure and phosphorus-rich properties of Chlorella can facilitate the construction of comparable transition metal phosphide electrocatalysts. Here, a microorganism template strategy is proposed to construct a cobalt-phosphide-graphene hybrid. Chlorella can absorb metal ions, and the generated rough spherical nanoparticles are uniformly distributed around the reduced graphene oxide nanosheets. This designed catalyst has comparable HER performance in acidic electrolytes and needs an overpotential of only 153 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2. The experimental and density functional theory results imply that the charge redistribution between Co2P and pyrrole-N is the key factor in enhancing the HER activity. The induced electron aggregation at the N and P sites can serve as a key active site for absorbing the adsorbed hydrogen atom intermediate to accelerate the HER process, contributing to the active sites of Co2P- and pyrrole-N-doped carbon with 0 eV hydrogen adsorption free energy. This work provides a broad idea for synthesizing advanced catalysts by a biological template approach, facilitating the innovative integration of biology and emerging electrochemical energy technologies.

Recent Advancements in Ascribing Several Platinum Free Electrocatalysts Pertinent to Hydrogen Evolution from Water Reduction

The advancement of a sustainable and scalable catalyst for hydrogen production is crucial for the future of the hydrogen economy. Electrochemical water splitting stands out as a promising pathway for sustainable hydrogen production. However, the development of Pt-free electrocatalysts that match the energy efficiency of Pt while remaining economical poses a significant challenge. This review addresses this challenge by highlighting latest breakthroughs in Pt-free catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Specifically, we delve into the catalytic performance of various transition metal phosphides, metal carbides, metal sulphides, and metal nitrides toward HER. Our discussion emphasizes strategies for enhancing catalytic performance and explores the relationship between structural composition and the performance of different electrocatalysts. Through this comprehensive review, we aim to provide insights into the ongoing efforts to overcome barriers to scalable hydrogen production and pave the way for a sustainable hydrogen economy.

Facile and Cost-effective Synthesis of CoP@N-doped Carbon with High Catalytic Performance for Electrochemical Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

The manufacture of efficient and low-cost hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts is regarded as a critical solution to achieve carbon neutrality. Herein, we developed an economical method to synthesize a CoP-anchored N-doped carbon catalyst via one-step pyrolysis using inexpensive starting materials (cobalt ion salt, phytic acid, and glycine). The size of the CoP nanoparticles was controlled by adjusting the Co/P ratio of the catalysts. Nanoscale CoP particles with adequate exposure to active sites were uniformly anchored on the surface of the conductive nitrogen-doped carbon substrate, ensuring the rapid transfer of electrons and species. When Co/P=0.89, the as-made catalyst exhibited outstanding HER activity, with an extraordinarily low overpotential of 202 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and long-term stability.

Heterointerface engineering of cobalt molybdenum suboxide for overall water splitting

Highly active and earth-abundant electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are of great significance for sustainable hydrogen generation through alkaline water electrolysis. Here, with an aim to enhance the bifunctional electrocatalytic activity of cobalt molybdate towards overall water splitting, we demonstrate a simple method involving the modulation of the cobalt to molybdenum ratio and creation of phase-modulated heterointerfaces. Samples with varying Co/Mo molar ratios are obtained via a microwave-assisted synthesis method using appropriate starting precursors. The synthesis conditions are modified to create a heterointerface involving multiple phases of cobalt molybdenum suboxides (CoO/CoMoO3/Co2Mo3O8) supported on Ni foam (NF). Detailed electrochemical studies reveal that modulating the composition and hence the interface can tweak the bifunctional electrocatalytic activity of the material for HER and OER and thus improve the overall water splitting efficiency with very high durability over 500 h. To further evaluate the practical applicability of the studied catalyst in water splitting, an alkaline electrolyser is fabricated with the optimized cobalt molybdenum suboxide material (CMO-1.25) as a bifunctional electrocatalyst. A current density of 220 mA cm-2 @1.6 V and 670 mA cm-2 @1.8 V was obtained, and the device showed very good long-term durability.

High-efficiency electrocatalytic nitrite reduction toward ammonia synthesis on CoP@TiO2 nanoribbon array

Electrochemical reduction of nitrite (NO₂^-) can satisfy the necessity for NO₂^- contaminant removal and deliver a sustainable pathway for ammonia (NH₃) generation. Its practical application yet requires highly efficient electrocatalysts to boost NH₃ yield and Faradaic efficiency (FE). In this study, CoP nanoparticle-decorated TiO₂ nanoribbon array on Ti plate (CoP@TiO₂/TP) is verified as a high-efficiency electrocatalyst for the selective reduction of NO₂^- to NH₃. When measured in 0.1 M NaOH with NO₂^-, the freestanding CoP@TiO₂/TP electrode delivers a large NH₃ yield of 849.57 μmol h^-1 cm^-2 and a high FE of 97.01% with good stability. Remarkably, the subsequently fabricated Zn-NO₂^- battery achieves a high power density of 1.24 mW cm^-2 while delivering a NH₃ yield of 714.40 μg h^-1 cm^-2.

MOF-Derived Co Nanoparticles Catalyst Assisted by F- and N-Doped Carbon Quantum Dots for Oxygen Reduction

The oxygen reduction reaction is crucial in the cathode of fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Consequently, designing robust and durable ORR catalysts is vital to developing metal-air batteries and fuel cells. Metal-organic frameworks feature an adjustable structure, a periodic porosity, and a large specific surface area, endowing their derivative materials with a unique structure. In this study, F and N co-doped on the carbon support surface (Co/FN-C) via the pyrolysis of ZIF-67 as a sacrificial template while using Co/FN-C as the non-noble metal catalysts. The Co/FN-C displays excellent long-term durability and electrochemical catalytic performance in acidic solutions. These performance improvements are achieved because the CQDs alleviate the structural collapse during the pyrolysis of ZIF-67, which increases the active sites in the Co nanoparticles. Moreover, F- and N-doping improves the catalytic activity of the carbon support by providing additional electrons and active sites. Furthermore, F anions are redox-stable ligands that exhibit long-term operational stability. Therefore, the well-dispersed Co NPs on the surface of the Co/FN-C are promising as the non-noble metal catalysts for ORR.

Versatile Janus Architecture for Electrocatalytic Applications

Janus architectures have garnered great research efforts in recent years, leading to outstanding advances in electrocatalysis. Benefiting from the synergistic combination of their anisotropy which endows the manifestation of various co-existing electrochemical properties, and their compartmentalized structure that enables each functional domain to retain its inherent activity, with little to no interference from other domains, Janus architectures show great potential as exceptionally versatile electrocatalysts to complement a plethora of electrocatalytic processes. Thus, coupled with the growing interest in Janus architectures for electrocatalysis, it is imperative to investigate and reconsider their design strategies and future directions.

Rational Design of Porous Nanowall Arrays of Ultrafine Co4N Nanoparticles Confined in a La2O2CN2 Matrix on Carbon Cloth for a High-Performing Supercapacitor Electrode

Transition metal nitrides (TMNs) have received special concern as important energy storage materials, owing to their high conductibility, good mechanical strength, and superior corrosion resistance. However, their insufficient capacitance and poor cycling stability limit their practical applications for supercapacitors. Here, a novel three-dimensional (3D) self-supported integrated electrode consisted of porous nanowall arrays of ultrafine cobalt nitride (Co₄N) nanoparticles encapsulated in a lanthanum oxycyanamide (LOC) matrix on carbon cloth (Co₄N@LOC/CC) for outstanding electrochemical energy storage is rationally designed and fabricated. The 3D monolithic configuration of porous nanowall arrays facilitates the mass/charge transfer, the exposure of electroactive sites, and the enhancement of electrical conductivity. Meanwhile, the unique core-shell structure of Co₄N@LOC can prevent ultrafine Co₄N nanoparticles from sintering, agglomeration, and oxidation and promotes electron transfer dynamics during the redox reaction, meanwhile enhancing the stability of the electrode. Additionally, the synergy of Co₄N and LOC can result in an efficient electron/ion transport in the process of the charge-discharge. Because of these features, the Co₄N@LOC/CC electrode displays superior specific capacitance (895.6 mF cm^-2 or 613.4 F g^-1 at 1 mA cm^-2) and admirable cycling durability (87.9% capacitance reservation after 10 000 cycles), surpassing the majority of nitride-based electrodes reported thus far. Furthermore, after being assembled into an asymmetric supercapacitor using active carbon (AC) as an anode, the obtained Co₄N@LOC/CC//AC/CC device displays a high energy density of 41.7 Wh kg^-1 at the power density of 875.8 W kg^-1 with a high capacitance reservation of 87.6% after 5000 cycles at 2 mA cm^-2. This work offers an efficient approach of combining TMNs with rare earth compounds to enhance the capacitance and stability of TMNs for supercapacitor electrodes.

Ultrafast Room-Temperature Synthesis of Self-Supported NiFe-Layered Double Hydroxide as Large-Current-Density Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalyst

Water splitting is a promising sustainable technology to produce high purity hydrogen, but its commercial application remains a giant challenge due to the kinetically sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this work, a time- and energy-saving approach to directly grow NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) nanosheets on nickel foam under ambient temperature and pressure is reported. These NiFe-LDH nanosheets are vertically rooted in nickel foam and interdigitated together to form a highly porous array, leading to numerous exposed active sites, reduced resistance of charge/mass transportation and enhanced mechanical stability. As self-supported electrocatalyst, the representative sample (NF@NiFe-LDH-1.5-4) shows an excellent large-current-density catalytic activity for OER in alkaline electrolyte, requiring low overpotentials of 190 and 220 mV to reach the current densities of 100 and 657 mA cm^-2 with a Tafel slope of 38.1 mV dec^-1 . In addition, NF@NiFe-LDH-1.5-4 as an overall water splitting electrocatalyst can stably achieve a large current density of 200 mA cm^-2 over 300 h at a low cell voltage of 1.83 V, meeting the requirement of industrial hydrogen production. This exceedingly simple and ultrafast synthesis of low-cost and highly active large-current-density OER electrocatalysts can propel the commercialization of hydrogen producing technology via water splitting.

In Situ Fabrication of Nickel-Iron Oxalate Catalysts for Electrochemical Water Oxidation at High Current Densities

Ni-Fe-based electrode materials are promising candidates for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The synergy between Fe and Ni atoms is crucial in modulating the electronic structure of the active site to enhance electrochemical performance. Herein, a simple chemical immersion technique was used to grow Ni-Fe oxalate nanowires directly on a porous nickel foam substrate. The as-prepared Ni-Fe oxalate electrode exhibited an excellent electrochemical performance of the OER with ultralow overpotentials of 210 and 230 mV to reach 50 and 100 mA cm-2 current densities, respectively, in a 1 M KOH aqueous solution. The excellent OER performance of this Ni-Fe oxalate electrode can be attributed to its bimetallic composition and nanowire structure, which leads to an efficient ionic diffusion, high electronic conductivity, and fast electron transfer. The overall analysis indicates a suitable approach for designing electrocatalysts applicable in energy conversion.

Recent progress in water-splitting electrocatalysis mediated by 2D noble metal materials

Two-dimensional (2D) nanostructures have enabled noble-metal-based nanomaterials to be promising electrocatalysts toward overall water splitting due to their inherent structural advantages, including a high specific surface active area, numerous low-coordinated atoms, and a high density of defects and edges. Moreover, it is also disclosed that the electronic effect and strain effect within 2D nanostructures also benefit the further promotion of the electrocatalytic performance. In this review, we have focused on the recent progress in the fabrication of advanced electrocatalysts based on 2D noble-metal-based nanomaterials toward water splitting electrocatalysis. First, fundamental descriptions about water-splitting mechanisms, some promising engineering strategies, and major challenges in electrochemical water splitting are given. Then, the structural merits of 2D nanostructures for water splitting electrocatalysis are also highlighted, including abundant surface active sites, lattice distortion, abundant surface defects, electronic effects, and strain effects. Additionally, some representative water-splitting electrocatalysts have been discussed in detail to highlight the superiorities of 2D noble-metal-based nanomaterials for electrochemical water splitting. Finally, the underlying challenges and future opportunities for the fabrication of more advanced electrocatalysts for water splitting are also highlighted. We hope that this review article provides guidance for the fabrication of more efficient electrocatalysts for boosting industrial hydrogen production via water splitting.

Nonmetal-doping of noble metal-based catalysts for electrocatalysis

In response to the shortage of fossil fuels, efficient electrochemical energy conversion devices are attracting increasing attention, while the limited electrochemical performance and high cost of noble metal-based electrode materials remain a daunting challenge. The electrocatalytic performance of electrode materials is closely bound with their intrinsic electronic/ionic states and crystal structures. Apart from the nanoscale design and conductive composite strategies, heteroatom doping, particularly for nonmetal doping (e.g., hydrogen, boron, sulfur, selenium, phosphorus, and tellurium), is also another effective strategy to greatly promote the intrinsic activity of the electrode materials by tuning their atomic structures. From the perspective of electrocatalytic reactions, the effective atomic structure regulation could induce additional active sites, create rich defects, and optimize the adsorption capability, thereby contributing to the promotion of the electrocatalytic performance of noble metal-based electrocatalysts. Encouraged by the great progress achieved in this field, we have reviewed recent advancements in nonmetal doping for electrocatalytic energy conversion. Specifically, the doping effect on the atomic structure and intrinsic electronic/ionic state is also systematically illustrated and the relationship with the electrocatalytic performance is also investigated. It is believed that this review will provide guidance for the development of more efficient electrocatalysts.

Recent Advances in Multimetal and Doped Transition-Metal Phosphides for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction at Different pH values

Hydrogen is a fuel with a potentially zero-carbon footprint viewed as a viable alternative to fossil fuels. It can be produced in a large scale via electrochemical water splitting using electricity derived from renewable sources, but this would require highly active, inexpensive, and stable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts to replace the Pt benchmark. Transition-metal phosphides (TMPs) are potential Pt replacements owing to their generally high activity as well as versatility as HER catalysts for different pH media. This review summarizes the recent progress in the development of TMP HER electrocatalysts, focusing on the strategies that have been recently explored to tune the activity in acidic, neutral, and basic media. These strategies are the doping of TMPs with metal and nonmetal elements, fabrication of multimetallic phosphide phases, and construction of multicomponent heterostructures comprising TMPs and another component such as a different TMP or a metal oxide/hydroxide. The synthetic methods utilized to design the catalysts are also presented. Finally, the challenges still remaining and future research directions are discussed.

A general MOF-intermediated synthesis of hollow CoFe-based trimetallic phosphides composed of ultrathin nanosheets for boosting water oxidation electrocatalysis

Engineering an electrode material for boosting reaction kinetics is highly desired for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in the anodic half reaction, and is still a grand challenge for energy conversion technologies. By taking inspiration from the catalytic properties of transition metal phosphides (TMPs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), we herein propose a general MOF-intermediated synthesis of a series of hollow CoFeM (M = Bi, Ni, Mn, Cu, Ce, and Zn) trimetallic phosphides composed of ultrathin nanosheets as advanced electrocatalysts for the OER. A dramatic improvement of electrocatalytic performance toward the OER is observed for hollow CoFeM trimetallic phosphides compared to bimetallic CoFe phosphides. Remarkably, composition-optimized CoFeBiP hollow microspheres could deliver superior electrocatalytic performance, achieving a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 with an overpotential of only 273 mV. Mechanistic investigations reveal that the Bi and P doping effectively optimizes the electronic structure of Co and Fe by charge redistribution, which significantly lowers the adsorption energy of oxygen intermediates. Moreover, the hollow microsphere structures composed of ultrathin nanosheets also enable them to provide rich surface active sites to boost the electrocatalytic OER.
