Association between non-scarring alopecia and hypothyroidism: a bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization study

Background

Non-scarring alopecia is typically represented by two main types: alopecia areata (AA) and androgenetic alopecia (AGA). While previous observational studies have indicated a link between non-scarring alopecia and hypothyroidism, the precise causal relationship remains uncertain. To determine the potential links between non-scarring alopecia and hypothyroidism, we conducted a bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis.

Methods

We used independent genetic instruments from the FinnGen consortium for AA (682 cases, 361,140 controls) and AGA (195 cases, 201,019 controls) to investigate the association with hypothyroidism in the UK Biobank study (22,687 cases, 440,246 controls). The primary analysis was performed using the inverse variance-weighted method. Complementary approaches were employed to evaluate the pleiotropy and heterogeneity.

Results

Genetically predicted AA exhibited a positive causal effect on hypothyroidism (odds ratio [OR], 1.0017; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.0004-1.0029; P = 0.0101). Additionally, hypothyroidism was found to be strongly correlated with an increase in the risk of AA (OR, 45.6839; 95% CI, 1.8446-1131.4271, P = 0.0196). However, no causal relationship was demonstrated between AGA and hypothyroidism. A sensitivity analysis validated the integrity of these causal relationships.

Conclusion

This MR study supports a bidirectional causal link between AA and hypothyroidism. Nevertheless, additional research is needed to gain a more thorough comprehension of the causal relationship between non-scarring alopecia and hypothyroidism.

Intermittent chronic telogen effluvium with an unusual dermoscopic finding following COVID ‐19

Various conditions, including infections, can cause telogen effluvium (TE). One of them is coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19), where hair loss usually begins between 2 and 12 weeks after the illness. TE can be acute or chronic, and the chronic type can be intermittent. Here, we present the case of a 17‐year‐old girl with severe and widespread hair loss following an upper respiratory infection suspected to be COVID‐19, with the patient having a history of such attacks since childhood. Evidence from biopsy and dermoscopy indicated a diagnosis of TE.

Alopecia and techniques in hair restoration: an overview for the cosmetic surgeon

PURPOSE

Alopecia is a debilitating disorder affecting millions of individuals worldwide. Although challenging to treat, advances in hair restoration technologies have led to multiple viable options with excellent clinical results. This paper seeks to provide an overview of hair loss and the currently utilized techniques in hair transplantation in order to serve as a reference source for the facial plastic surgeon.

METHODS

A comprehensive review of recent literature regarding the evaluation of, and management modalities for, alopecia was performed.

RESULTS

The follicular unit extraction technique and the strip harvest technique are both widely used for patients desiring transplantation. While both techniques can lead to successful outcomes, each has pros and cons that are important to understand prior to engaging in the procedure.

CONCLUSION

Advancements in hair restoration technologies implementing robotics, manual, or motorized follicular unit extraction have facilitated optimization of outcomes. Adjuvant treatment modalities including robotics and platelet-rich plasma injections have shown utility in augmenting transplantation.
