Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity and depression often co-occur and are interdependent. However, evidence regarding the association between body fat percentage in different regions and depression is scarce. Additionally, the impacts of sex-specific and BMI-stratified differences on the relationship between body fat percentage and depression remain unclear. METHODS Data were drawn from the NHANES for the years 2005-2006 and 2011-2018. Body fat percentage was assessed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Depression was evaluated using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Survey-weighted binary logistic regression analyses were employed to investigate the relationship between body fat percentage and depression. Stratification analysis were stratified by sex and BMI. RESULTS This study comprised 10,694 participants. Controlling confounders, the higher quartile of total body fat percentage was associated with increased OR for depression (Q4 vs Q1: OR, 1.46; 95 % CI, 1.04-2.05) as well as for leg (Q4 vs Q1: OR, 1.48; 95 % CI, 1.07-2.05), gynoid (Q4 vs Q1: OR, 1.51; 95 % CI, 1.11-2.05), subtotal (Q4 vs Q1: OR, 1.47; 95 % CI, 1.06-2.03) and head (Q3 vs Q1: OR, 1.30; 95 % CI, 1.00-1.68). In stratification analysis by sex and BMI, body fat percentage seemed to be more closely associated with depression in males or in the underweight and overweight groups. LIMITATION Cross-sectional study design and self-reported depression. CONCLUSIONS Elevated body fat percentage was strongly associated with higher prevalence of depression, especially in males or in the underweight and overweight groups.

Abstract
Physical activity is a modifiable lifestyle behavior known for reducing symptoms of and being a risk factor for depression and mental health disorders. However, emerging adults (ages 18-25) struggle to meet recommended amounts. In this study, we explore the association between physical activity, depressive symptoms, and health factors in 137 Hispanic emerging adults. Using a cross-sectional survey design, sociodemographic information, depressive symptoms (CES-D score), physical activity (IPAQ score), body composition, and blood pressure measures were obtained. Statistical analyses included correlation and regression analyses. More than half of the participants demonstrated depressive symptomology (59.1%) and body fat percentage greater than 25% (64.2%). Body fat percentage, lean body mass, stress, and heart rate demonstrated notable associations with depressive symptoms and physical activity. When measured continuously and categorically, IPAQ was not a significant predictor of depressive symptoms. When used as a binary variable with a cutoff of 600 MET min/week, IPAQ score revealed a negative relationship with CES-D score (β = -0.169, SE = 2.748, p = 0.034). Our results indicate that a threshold of physical activity, 600 MET min/week, may confer protective effects against depressive symptoms. Future research should investigate the context and quality of physical activity to address mental health disparities in this underrepresented population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There has been considerable progress in developing global health education and research in China. Nevertheless, evidence of the progress of Chinese universities' contributions to global health research is limited. More efforts are needed to depict the progress Chinese universities have collectively made in advancing the field of global health. This study aimed to examine Chinese universities' collective contributions to global health research by describing the longitudinal trends in global health research publications, uncovering research themes in global health, and exploring collaboration patterns. METHODS A comprehensive bibliometric analysis was conducted for original research studies of the ten founding members of the China Consortium of Universities for Global Health, one of the largest networks of global health research and education in China. RESULTS We found that (1) the number of research publications in the field of global health has steadily increased from 2014 to 2020, (2) non-communicable disease was the most popular research topic, accounting for over one-third of total publications, followed by maternal and child health and neurological and mental disorders and diseases, (3) less than one-fifth of papers involved primary data collection, with the majority of the study populations from low-income and lower-middle-income countries in Asia and Africa, and (4) a sizable collaboration network has been established with co-authors from over 200 oversea universities or organizations, with about one third from the US. CONCLUSIONS Despite a variety of challenges and barriers, Chinese universities have been playing an increasingly important role in global health research as assessed by peer-reviewed publications over the last decade. More concerted efforts by multiple stakeholders, including government, private sectors, funding agencies, academic institutions, and researchers, are needed to advance the development of global health research in China.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Extensive observational evidence links diet quality to the risk for major depressive disorder (MDD), while clinical trials show that dietary improvement can improve depressive symptoms. However, due to issues with blinding dietary trials, confirming a causal relationship for diet's influence on MDD requires further research. Thus, we systemically investigated the bi-directional causal relationships between dietary habits and MDD by using two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR). METHODS We collected publicly available genome-wide association studies' summary statistics for dietary habits from UK Biobank (n = 449,210) and MDD from the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium (n = 142,646). We used a weighted median approach to synthesize MR estimates across genetic instruments. For the robustness of our results, we compared weighted median results with results from the inverse-variance weighted, the weighted mode, and MR-PRESSO. RESULTS There was moderate evidence that beef intake has a protective effect on MDD. There was weak but detectable evidence that cereal intake has a protective effect on MDD, while non-oily fish intake might increase the risk of MDD. We did not observe any causal effect of MDD on dietary habits. LIMITATIONS Our study may suffer from the violation of assumptions of MR due to horizontal pleiotropy; therefore, we did several sensitivity analyses to detect and minimize the bias. CONCLUSIONS In this two-sample MR analysis, we observed that higher beef intake may be protective against MDD. However, MDD did not appear to affect dietary habits. Potential mechanisms need to be further investigated to support our novel findings.

Abstract
Accumulating evidence supports a link between depression and being overweight in women. Given previously reported sex differences in fat accumulation and depression prevalence, as well as the likely role of sex hormones in both overweight and mood disorders, we hypothesised that the depression-overweight association may be mediated by sex hormones. To this end, we investigated the association of being overweight with depression, and then considered the role of sex hormones in relation to being overweight and depression in a large population-based cohort. We included a total of 3124 women, 970 premenopausal and 2154 postmenopausal from the LIFE-Adult cohort study in our analyses. We evaluated associations between being overweight (BMI >25 kg/m2), sex hormone levels, and depressive symptomatology according to Centre for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CES-D) scores, and explored mediation of depression in a mediation model. Being overweight was significantly associated with depressive symptoms in premenopausal but not postmenopausal women. Both premenopausal and postmenopausal overweight women had higher free testosterone levels compared with normal weight women. Premenopausal women with depressive symptomatology had higher free testosterone levels compared to women without. We found a significant mediation effect of depressive symptomatology in overweight premenopausal women through free testosterone level. These findings highlight the association between being overweight and depressed, and suggest that high free testosterone levels may play a significant role in depression of overweight premenopausal women. Based on this, pharmacological approaches targeting androgen levels in overweight depressed females, in particular when standard anti-depressive treatments fail, could be of specific clinical relevance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate psychological distress in patients on chronic hemodialysis. SUBJECTS AND METHODS A total of 72 patients on chronic hemodialysis were enrolled in this study. We evaluated psychological distress by using the K6 questionnaire, health-related quality of life (HRQOL) by using the EQ-5D questionnaire, and clinical parameters. Among the 72 patients, we also evaluated changes in K6 scores in 58 patients at 1-year follow-up. RESULTS The mean K6 score was 3.7 ± 3.7 and 2 subjects (2.8%) were defined as having psychological distress. K6 scores were significantly correlated with body fat percentage, albumin level, and EQ-5D scores in total subjects. K6 scores were also significantly and negatively correlated with EQ-5D scores in men and women. In the 1-year follow-up group, changes in K6 scores were weakly and negatively correlated with changes in EQ-5D scores. CONCLUSION Psychological distress was closely associated with HRQOL in patients on chronic hemodialysis. Coping strategies for psychological distress might be useful in improving HRQOL in patients on hemodialysis.
