Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to assess how neuropsychological factors differ between general surgery interns and normative data from age-matched adults in the general population. DESIGN Participants completed a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment battery. Neuropsychological factors assessed included: executive function (Behavioral Rating Inventory of Executive Function, BRIEF), working memory (Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, or WAIS, digit span), psychomotor speed (WAIS coding, Trails A and B), selective attention (D2 Test of Attention), and problem solving (Tower of London, TOL). Data for all measures was compared to previously published normative data for age-matched, healthy adults in the general population using one-sample t-tests. SETTING This study was completed at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, IN, which is a large academic healthcare training institution. PARTICIPANTS Postgraduate year 1 general surgery residents (PGY1s) voluntarily participated in this study. RESULTS Twenty-six general surgery PGY1s completed all measures. We found that PGY1s had significantly better behavioral inhibition, working memory, selective attention, problem solving, and psychomotor speed than their counterparts in the general population (Table 1). Conversely, we found that PGY1s had significantly lower cognitive flexibility (p = 0.02) and ability to monitor task progress (p = 0.006) than the general population. CONCLUSIONS The results from this study indicate that there are several neuropsychological factors that may help explain the high achievement of general surgery PGY1s. Assessment of these factors could aid general surgery programs in the selection and training of high-caliber residents. However, there are indicators that PGY1s struggle from cognitive inflexibility and task monitoring compared to the general population. These skills are needed to manage the complex and dynamic nature of surgical performance, so educators should consider methods to enhance junior residents' development of these characteristics.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Job satisfaction, as a multidimensional psychological response to work experience, includes both cognitive and affective components which influence individuals' appraisals and state of minds. In recent years, researchers have begun to explore the psychological processes that might underlie the dispositional causes of job satisfaction. Affective temperaments can influence the experience of emotionally significant events at work and this, in turn, may influence job satisfactionOBJECTIVE:To investigate possible associations between affective temperamental features and job satisfaction in the health professions. METHODS The sample consisted of 294 subjects selected among health professionals. Data were collected by an online survey including the Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL) questionnaire and the short form of the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris and San Diego (TEMPS-A) questionnaire. RESULTS Hyperthymic, depressive, irritable and anxious temperaments predicted the risk of experiencing job dissatisfaction in healthcare professionals. No associations between Cyclothymic temperament and job satisfaction were found. CONCLUSION The identification of affective temperamental assets and liabilities is potentially useful in the development of supportive and psycho-educational strategies, aimed at preventing work-related stress and promoting mental health in workplaces, also reducing the risk of job dissatisfaction.

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study was to expand knowledge about the relationship between temperament and choice of profession by comparing temperaments among representatives of various professional groups. Subjects and Methods A total of 759 subjects aged 18-71, representatives of six professional groups: firefighters, musicians, athletes, bank managers, nurses and paramedics, were included in the study. Temperament was assessed using the TEMPS-A autoquestionnaire. Results Musicians showed higher levels of depressive and anxious temperaments whereas firefighters were lower on cyclothymic dimension. Athletes, bank managers and paramedics showed higher intensity of hyperthymic temperament compared to firefighters, musicians and nurses. Athletes showed lower of depressive temperament compared to bankers, musicians and nurses. Bankers obtained lower results of irritable temperament compared to musicians, athletes and nurses. Nurses showed a higher intensity of anxious temperament compared to firefighters, athletes and paramedics. Conclusion The results obtained support the concept of adaptive and socially useful role of affective temperaments. The studied professional groups show different individual temperamental profiles, which is justified in such aspects of the profession, as the level of stimulation, stress encountered, the necessity of making important decisions, or entering into relationship with the patient.

Abstract
Background Stress in the banking workplace is associated with psychological and health problems. Intensity of work-related stress experiences is associated with specificity of job stress factors personal features such as affective temperament. The aim of the study was to evaluate associations between affective temperament, coping stress strategies, and perceived job stress in bank employees. Methods Subjects were 209 bank workers aged 22–55 years (n = 101 managers and 108 non-managers). Affective temperament and stress coping strategies were evaluated using the Temperament Evaluation of Pisa, Paris and San Diego Autoquestionnaire (TEMPS-A) and Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS), respectively. Both questionnaires, TEMPS-A and CISS, show good internal consistency and are proper research methods in the bank employee group. Perceived job-related stress was rated for different sources of job stress common among bank workers. Results Depressive temperament was negatively associated with coping style focused on avoidance, and with job stress regarding “responsibility for decisions regarding other people” and “frequent trips.” Irritable temperament was positively correlated with coping style focused on task and job stress regarding “frequent trips.” Cyclothymic temperament was positively correlated with job stress regarding “direct work with money” and “organizational conditions of work.” Multidimensional linear regression showed that irritable and anxious temperaments were associated with coping style focused on task; depressive temperament was associated with coping style focused on avoidance; and cyclothymic temperament was associated with intensity of job stress. The results obtained indicate different levels of job-related stress associated with different sources in bank employees, working with managers and non-managers positions. Affective temperament was associated with stress coping strategies and intensity of perceived job stress. On the basis of affective temperament dimensions it is possible to predict stress coping styles and work-related stress perception in bank employees. Conclusion Affective temperament traits measured by TEMPS-A were associated with stress coping strategies and intensity of work stress perception in Polish bank employees.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bipolar disorder (BD) is impose a severe burden on caregivers. The aspects of the burden should be evaluated from broad perspective, because caregivers contribute greatly to the treatment process. Affective temperaments are widely distributed in the population, in their mild forms can provide adaptive properties. The aim of this study was to assess the affective temperaments among caregiver of patients with BD and to evaluate the impact of affective temperaments on the burden. METHODS The study sample included 101 caregivers of patients diagnosed with BD type I according to DSM-5 and 107 healthy volunteers. The Temperament Evaluation of the Memphis, Pisa, Paris and San Diego self-report questionnaire (TEMPS-A), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS), and Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS) were administered to both groups, and the Burden Assessment Scale (BAS) was administered to caregivers. RESULTS The hyperthymic and depressive temperament scores were higher in the caregivers than in the controls, and hyperthymic and depressive temperaments were predictor factors for caregiver. Irritable temperament also adversely affected the caregiver burden, but hyperthymic temperament was not related to development of burden. The mean BAS score was 43.2 ± 11 for the caregivers. The caregiver HDRS and HARS scores and the number of manic episodes were related to the level of burden. LIMITATION Cross-sectional study CONCLUSION: Affective temperaments may be related to being a caregiver and to the caregiver burden. Hyperthymic and depressive temperaments may indicate predisposition for being a caregiver. Irritable temperament adversely affects burden, whereas hyperthymic temperament could protect the caregiver from burden.

Abstract
Introduction The risk of professional burnout is constituted by job-related as well as individual factors. The latter involve affective temperament, which influences the perception of job-related stress. The aim of the present study was to assess the affective temperament, the level of job stress and professional burnout, as well as the relationships between these variables, in public servants and nurses. Material and methods 100 civil servants and 100 nurses were enrolled in the study. Affective temperament and burnout were assessed by means of TEMPS-A and MBI questionnaires, respectively. To measure the level of job-related stress, we have designed a 6-item self-reported questionnaire, which considered stressors common for both professions. Results Compared to the civil servants, nurses showed higher rate of anxious temperament and experienced greater intensity of job-related stress. The groups did not differ in the intensity of burnout symptoms. The rates of cyclothymic and anxious temperaments correlated with the intensity of stress, and burnout symptoms in the group of nurses. Within the civil servants group, the level of stress correlated with intensity of burnout, however no correlations with affective temperament were observed. The regression analysis performed in both groups revealed the significant effect of stress and cyclothymic temperament on burnout, while the effect of anxious temperament was not significant. Conclusions Cyclothymic and anxious temperaments are related to the level of experienced job stress and the risk of burnout. In professions like nursing, where employees show elevated rates of these temperaments, burnout prevention and stress management education is of particular importance.

Abstract
Affective temperaments are the subclinical manifestations or phenotypes of mood states and hypothetically represent one healthy end of the mood disorder spectrum. However, there is a scarcity of studies investigating the neurobiological basis of affective temperaments. One fundamental aspect of temperament is the behavioral reactivity to environmental stimuli, which can be effectively evaluated by use of cognitive event-related potentials (ERPs) reflecting the diversity of information processing. The aim of the present study is to explore the associations between P300 and the affective temperamental traits in healthy individuals. We recorded the P300 ERP waves using an auditory oddball paradigm in 50 medical student volunteers (23 females, 27 males). Participants' affective temperaments were evaluated using the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego-auto questionnaire version (TEMPS-A). In bivariate analyses, depressive temperament score was significantly correlated with P300 latency ( rs = 0.37, P < .01). In a multiple linear regression analysis, P300 latency showed a significant positive correlation with scores of depressive temperament (β = 0.40, P < .01) and a significant negative one with scores of cyclothymic temperament (β = -0.29, P = .03). Affective temperament scores were not associated with P300 amplitude and reaction times. These results indicate that affective temperaments are related to information processing in the brain. Depressive temperament may be characterized by decreased physiological arousal and slower information processing, while the opposite was observed for cyclothymic temperament.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Males and females have different temperaments. In individuals with gender dysphoria (GD) there is marked incongruence between a person׳s expressed/experienced gender and their biological sex. The present study aimed to investigate the most common affective temperaments in individuals with female-to-male (FtM) GD. METHODS We performed a prospective and comparative study investigating affective temperaments in subjects with FtM GD. Eighty subjects with FtM GD and 68 female controls were enrolled. The Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris and San Diego Autoquestionnaire (TEMPS-A) was completed by all participants. RESULTS TEMPS-A scores were significantly higher in subjects with FtM GD for hyperthymic temperament (p≤0.001), whereas depressive (p≤0.001), anxious (p≤0.001), and cyclothymic (p=0.028) temperament scores were significantly higher in female controls. LIMITATIONS The study was limited by the lack of male-to-female subjects and male controls. CONCLUSIONS The results of our study indicate that individuals with FtM GD have significantly higher scores of hyperthymic temperament, measured by TEMPS-A. Biological basis underlying the development of gender identity independent from the biological sex might be related with affective temperaments.
