Characteristics of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: A Case Report Investigating the Role of Kapha and Pitta Doshas

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) presents complex challenges in diagnosis and treatment due to its multifactorial nature. This case study focuses on a 31-year-old woman exhibiting symptoms of weight gain, irregular menstruation cycles, and hirsutism, leading to a diagnosis of PCOS. Conventional diagnostic criteria and ultrasound confirmation of multiple ovarian cysts supported the diagnosis. By integrating Ayurvedic principles alongside Western medical techniques, this study sought to address imbalances in the Kapha and Pitta doshas, fundamental energies according to Ayurveda, believed to contribute to PCOS symptoms. Clinical findings emphasized the role of Pitta dosha imbalance in inflammation, hormonal irregularities, and excessive body heat, while Kapha dosha imbalance manifested in fluid retention, weight gain, and increased mucus production. A holistic treatment approach was devised, aiming to restore doshic balance while addressing hormonal and metabolic dysregulation. The treatment protocol comprised lifestyle modifications, advocating for a regular exercise regimen focusing on activities enhancing insulin sensitivity and promoting weight loss. Swimming, yoga, and brisk walking were recommended to achieve these goals. Dietary interventions tailored to balance Kapha and Pitta doshas were prescribed, emphasizing nourishing, warming foods low in carbohydrates to prevent weight gain and boost metabolism. Anti-inflammatory foods, such as turmeric and ginger, were incorporated to mitigate inflammation. The integration of Ayurvedic principles alongside Western medicine offered a comprehensive approach to PCOS management, addressing both the root causes and symptoms of the condition. This personalized treatment strategy aimed not only to alleviate immediate symptoms but also to promote long-term health and well-being by restoring doshic equilibrium and optimizing hormonal and metabolic functions. In conclusion, this case study highlights the potential efficacy of combining Ayurvedic and Western medical approaches in the management of PCOS, offering a tailored and holistic treatment paradigm for patients seeking comprehensive care.

An Ayurvedic approach to sustaining and pampering the feet of healthcare workers

The COVID-19 pandemic caused imbalances in the lives of healthcare workers to a great degree, leading to long hours on the feet without time for sustained rest and rejuvenation. Ayurvedic wisdom provides a holistic lens from which to view the importance of footcare, which ultimately affects the systemic being. To reduce suffering on all levels, it is important to dedicate time, daily, to the use of doshic-specific self-care techniques. This article offers a daily footcare ritual in support of mind, body, and spiritual health through application of oiling, massage, gratitude, and a yoga-based inversion.

Development of a reliable Dosha self-assessment questionnaire

INTRODUCTION

The Ayurvedic theory of Tri-Dosha offers a unique framework for understanding human differences in health and disease. The Doshas could be readily applied in clinical studies to control for such differences the same way sex, age, height and weight are routinely used except that clinical evaluation is required and methods vary. No open-source questionnaire has been shown to be reliable for self-assessment. Therefore, we undertook this study to develop a reliable Dosha self-assessment questionnaire with characteristics suitable for use in clinical research.

METHODS

A review of published questionnaires and translations of classic Ayurvedic texts along with an analysis of item-total correlations and ANOVAs by Dosha for 735 responses to a 37-item ipsative questionnaire from an Ayurveda products company served as the basis for generating 108 Dosha-specific test items featuring a 7-point Likert scale. We used item-total and inter-item correlations from a convenience sample of 176 individuals to identify the best performing items. We then solicited repeat responses to the resultant 39-item questionnaire (13 for each Dosha) from these and other website visitors and calculated test-retest reliability as the intraclass correlation coefficient for absolute agreement (ICC 2,1) for each Dosha.

RESULTS

The final questionnaire gives normally distributed results. Among 76 self-selected adults, the test-retest reliabilities for Vata, Pitta and Kapha Dosha scores are all above 0.8.

CONCLUSIONS

This study demonstrates that it is possible to quantify the three Doshas with adequate reliability for most clinical studies.
