Abstract
This study aimed to examine joint trajectories of loneliness, social isolation and sarcopenia and their associations with adverse outcomes. A total of 4701 participants aged ≥60 years who had a baseline and at least one follow-up assessment of loneliness, social isolation and sarcopenia across 2011, 2013 and 2015 waves in China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. Adverse outcomes were obtained in 2018 wave. Joint trajectories were fit using the parallel process latent class growth analysis, and their associations with adverse outcomes were evaluated using modified Poisson regression. Joint trajectory patterns for social relationship and sarcopenia did not vary by the assessment for sarcopenia, but did vary by the assessment for social relationship. Older adults exhibit distinct joint trajectories and those with persistent combination of loneliness or social isolation and sarcopenia experience greatest risk of adverse outcomes. These findings implicate integration of health care and social care for community-dwelling older adults.

Abstract
AIM Muscle mass and strength correlate with cognitive function; however, it remains unclear whether dynapenia (i.e., muscle weakness with preserved muscle mass) is relevant. This study aimed to explore whether dynapenia is associated with global cognitive function in community-dwelling older Japanese adults. METHODS This cross-sectional study used data from the Integrated Research Initiative for Living Well with Dementia Cohort Study, which pooled data from five community-based geriatric cohorts. Dynapenia was defined as muscle weakness without muscle mass loss according to the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia criteria. Cognitive function was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). An ordered logistic regression analysis was conducted with dynapenia as the exposure and with cognitive decline stages, defined as an MMSE score of 27-30 for normal cognition, 24-26 for possible cognitive decline, and <24 for cognitive decline, as the outcome, stratified by sex and adjusted for age, muscle mass, education, alcohol consumption, smoking habits, living alone, and non-communicable diseases. RESULTS We analyzed data for 3338 participants (2162 female) with preserved muscle mass. Of these, 449 (13.5%) had dynapenia, and 79 (2.4%) exhibited cognitive decline. Multivariate odds ratios (95% confidence interval) for cognitive decline among those with dynapenia, compared with those without dynapenia, were 1.51 (1.02-2.24) for males and 2.08 (1.51-2.86) for females. CONCLUSIONS Muscle weakness is associated with cognitive decline, even in individuals with preserved muscle mass. Further studies are needed to better understand the association between muscle weakness and cognitive decline over time in order to develop dementia prevention strategies for those with dynapenia. Abstract
BACKGROUND Little is known about the association between sarcopenia and multimorbidity among middle-aged and older adults. This study investigated whether sarcopenia is associated with multimorbidity in middle-aged and older Chinese individuals. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 12,760 participants from China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) 2015, with data on 14 specified chronic diseases and sarcopenia status were included in the cross-sectional analysis. A total of 7345 participants without multimorbidity from the CHARLS 2015 were included and followed up in 2018 in the longitudinal analysis. Logistic regression models were used in a cross-sectional investigation to assess the association between sarcopenia status and multimorbidity. In a longitudinal analysis, the relationships between sarcopenia status and multimorbidity were investigated using Cox proportional hazards models. RESULTS Multimorbidity was prevalent in the no sarcopenia, possible sarcopenia, and sarcopenia groups at 38.8 % (3765/9713), 56.6 % (1199/2118), and 48.5 % (451/929), respectively. Multivariable regression revealed that both possible sarcopenia (β = 0.088, P<0.001) and sarcopenia (β = 0.028, P = 0.009), contributed to the number of chronic diseases. Logistic regression revealed that possible sarcopenia (OR: 1.56, 95 % CI: 1.39-1.76) was associated with multimorbidity. In the longitudinal analysis, participants in the possible sarcopenia group (HR: 1.19, 95 % CI:1.03-1.38) were more prone to experience new onset multimorbidity than did participants in the no sarcopenia group. CONCLUSIONS Possible sarcopenia is associated with the development of multimorbidity in middle-aged and older Chinese populations. Health screening of populations with possible sarcopenia can facilitate early detection of multimorbidity.

Abstract
Aim This study aims to explore the association between triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) ratio and relative grip strength in older adults in order to provide some references for the prevention and control of sarcopenia. Methods For this cross-sectional study, the demographic and clinical data of 1,404 individuals aged ≥60 years old were extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database in 2011-2014. The definition of relative grip strength was the sum of the largest reading from each hand/body mass index (BMI) ratio. We used weighted univariate linear regression and stepwise regression analysis to screen the covariates. Weighted univariate and multivariate linear regression analyses were used to explore the association between the TG/HDL-C ratio and the relative grip strength. We also explored this relationship in subgroups of gender, diabetes mellitus (DM), cardiovascular disease (CVD), and arthritis. The evaluation index was β with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results A total of 1,306 older adults were eligible. After adjusting for the covariates including age, gender, race, marital status, physical activity, DM, CVD, arthritis, and chronic kidney disease (CKD), we found that the TG/HDL-C ratio was negatively linked to the relative grip strength (all p < 0.05). Furthermore, the increased TG/HDL-C ratio was also related to the decreased relative grip strength in those who were women, not having DM, and having CVD (all p < 0.05). Conclusion With the increase in the TG/HDL-C ratio, the relative grip strength of older adults decreased significantly, indicating that the TG/HDL-C ratio could be closely monitored in the older adult population and may be associated with the prevention and control of sarcopenia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Subjective memory complaints are considered an early sign of cognitive decline. Recent evidence shows that grip strength is an important predictor of cognitive function. However, few studies have compared whether one condition is uniquely associated with cognitive function when another condition is controlled for. AIMS To explore the longitudinal associations of cognitive function with subjective memory complaints and grip strength in middle-aged and older adults, with a particular focus on whether one condition is uniquely associated with cognitive function when another condition is considered. METHODS A total of 3,877 middle-aged and older adults (aged 45-92 years) from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study reported on their demographic and health status and completed measures of grip strength and subjective memory complaints, as well as a series of cognitive tests, every two years between 2011 and 2015. Generalized estimating equation models were used to assess the relationships between grip strength, subjective memory complaints, and cognitive function. RESULTS Grip strength was longitudinally associated with cognitive function (β = 0.021, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.011, 0.030, P < 0.001) independent of subjective memory complaints. In contrast, changes in the subjective memory complaints were not related to cognitive function over time (β = 0.107, 95% CI: - 0.025, 0.238, P = 0.112). Only at baseline subjective memory complaints were associated with poorer cognitive function (β = - 1.142, 95% CI: - 1.309, - 0.975, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Grip strength might be a more important clinical correlate of cognitive function decline over time than subjective memory complaints. DISCUSSION Regular assessment and close monitoring of grip strength might help identify individuals who might be at high risk for cognitive impairment.
