Tunable surface adsorption and wettability of candle soot coated on ferroelectric ceramics

Multifunctional carbon nanotubes coated stainless steel mesh for electrowetting, hydrophobic, and dye absorption behavior

Electrowetting behaviour for carbon nanotubes (CNT) grown on stainless steel mesh was investigated. The effect of temperature, time, and applied bias voltage on the contact angle of water droplets was studied. The impact of temperature variation on contact angle was also performed for the temperature ranging from 25 to 70 °C. A decrement of contact angle by 68% was observed for the mentioned range indicating a transition from a hydrophobic to hydrophilic nature. A similar trend was observed on the application of electric potential to the CNT-modified stainless-steel mesh ranging from 0 to 8 V with a transition of contact angle from 146 to 30 deg respectively. A comparative analysis for the contact angle variation with time for CNT-coated mesh and uncoated mesh was performed for 180 min. It is observed that uncoated mesh shows a reduction in contact angle to 0 deg with time while the CNT coated mesh shows surplus hydrophobicity with a 2 deg decrement in the extent of time. CNT-modified mesh successfully absorbs 95% of rhodamine B (RB) dye and detergent from water in 10 cycles.

Application of candle soot CNPs-TiO2-PVP composite in the detection of volatile organic compounds with aldehyde, amine and ketone functional groups by resistance and impedance responses

We have fabricated a solid-state gas sensor using a composite sensor layer made up of three different sensing materials namely; candle soot Carbon nanoparticles, Titanium dioxide and Poly (vinyl) pyrrolidone (PVP). The study was carried out to study the sensor’s response towards butyraldehyde, diethylamine and isobutyrophenone vapour at room temperature. The sensor was prepared by mixing candle soot CNPs, TiO2 and PVP in dimethylformamide using the ratio (2:1:3) respectively. The sensing materials were characterised using Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), x-ray diffraction (XRD), Transmission and Scanning Electron Microscopy (TEM, SEM). The sensor’s response was measured by injecting a volume of 1 to 5 μl of each liquid analyte in a round-bottomed glass and an LCR metre was used to measure the ∆R and ∆Z responses. In both parameters, the sensor responded well to the different analytes, the response of the sensor linearly increases as the analyte vapour concentration increases. The sensors were discovered to exhibit more sensitivity of 0.07 Ω ppm−1 towards diethylamine in ∆R response and it was more sensitive towards isobutyrophenone in ∆Z response giving a sensitivity of 0.14 Ω ppm−1 while Butyraldehyde had the fastest response time of 145 s and Diethylamine had the fasted recovery time 130 s.

Solar Energy Harvesting using Candle-Soot-Coated Thermoelectric Materials

This article reports the thermoelectric-based solar energy harvesting. The effect of candle soot (CS) coating on solar energy harvesting potential of thermoelectric modules is studied. To compare the performance, uncoated/coated modules are exposed to solar radiations (through Fresnel lens) and the other side is kept at lower temperature using continuous water flow. Substantial enhancements in electrical outputs are observed due to CS coating on the upper surface of the thermoelectric module. The open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current across coated module improve more than six times in comparison to the uncoated module with maximum voltage and current reaching up to 1.5 V and 14 mA. Similarly, the generator can deliver a maximum power of 10 mW across a resistance of 50 Ω. Results indicate that the CS coating is an effective technique to improve the performance of thermoelectric materials for running sensors and other low-power electronic devices.

On the Droplet Size and Application of Wettability Analysis for the Development of Ink and Printing Substrates

For the printing industry to grow and for companies in the field to remain competitive, there is a drive toward enhancing research and development so that costs of inks and substrates can be minimized. This paper details one of the first studies into the importance of liquid droplet size for applying wettability science to the development of inks and substrates using a newly developed picoliter droplet dispensing system (PDDS). Differences between using microliter, μL (0.2-5 μL), and picoliter, pL (15-380 pL), droplets for wettability analysis is considered, showing the importance of using pL droplets within the development of inks and substrates for printing applications. This is due to differences in contact angle being up to 40° when comparing results from pL- and μL-sized water-based droplets. Wetting, absorption, and evaporation behavior of different droplet sizes are also discussed with specific consideration to the use of wettability science for ink development and the development of inkjet printing substrates. A newly developed commercially available water-based blue ink and a commercially available water-based black ink are studied using pL experimentation to show how pL-sized droplets for inkjet wettability analysis is the optimum volume range to ensure optimized inkjet printing analysis and development.
