Polyvinylferrocenium modified Pt electrode for anaerobic glucose monitoring

Patchy nanocapsules of poly(vinylferrocene)-based block copolymers for redox-responsive release

Nanocapsules composed of a poly(vinylferrocene)-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) shell and a hydrophobic liquid core are prepared in water. The nanocapsule shells display a patchy structure with poly(vinylferrocene) patches with sizes of 25 ± 3 nm surrounded by poly(methyl methacrylate). The functional nanopatches can be selectively oxidized, thereby influencing the colloidal morphology and introducing polar domains in the nanocapsule shell. The hydrophobic to hydrophilic transition in the redox-responsive nanopatches can be advantageously used to release a hydrophobic payload encapsulated in the core by an oxidation reaction.

Microsensors for in vivo Measurement of Glutamate in Brain Tissue

Several immobilized enzyme-based electrochemical biosensors for glutamate detection have been developed over the last decade. In this review, we compare first and second generation sensors. Structures, working mechanisms, interference prevention, in vitro detection characteristics and in vivo performance are summarized here for those sensors that have successfully detected brain glutamate in vivo. In brief, first generation sensors have a simpler structure and are faster in glutamate detection. They also show a better sensitivity to glutamate during calibration in vitro. For second generation sensors, besides their less precise detection, their fabrication is difficult to reproduce, even with a semi-automatic dip-coater. Both generations of sensors can detect glutamate levels in vivo, but the reported basal levels are different. In general, second generation sensors detect higher basal levels of glutamate compared with the results obtained from first generation sensors. However, whether the detected glutamate is indeed from synaptic sources is an issue that needs further attention.

Manganese Dioxide Graphite Composite Electrodes: Application to the Electroanalysis of Hydrogen Peroxide, Ascorbic Acid and Nitrite

The modification of carbon powder with manganese dioxide using a wet impregnation procedure with electrochemical characterisation of the modified powder is described. The process involves saturation of the carbon powder with manganese(II) nitrate followed by thermal treatment at ca. 773 K leading to formation of manganese(IV) oxide on the surface of the carbon powder. The construction of composite electrodes based on manganese dioxide modified carbon powder and epoxy resin is also described, including optimisation of the percentage of the modified carbon powder. Composite electrodes showed attractive performances for electroanalytical applications, proving to be suitable for the electrochemical detection of hydrogen peroxide, ascorbic acid and nitrite ions with limits of detection comparable to the detection limits achieved by other analytical techniques. The results obtained for detection of these analytes, together with composite electrodes flexible design and low cost offers potential application of composite electrodes in biosensors.

Electrochemically polymerised composites of multi-walled carbon nanotubes and poly(vinylferrocene) and their use as modified electrodes: Application to glucose sensing

We report electrochemical composites of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with poly(vinylferrocene) (PVF). The polymeric architecture is prepared by first immobilising the MWCNTs onto a glassy carbon substrate, which acts to introduce electrical current into the composite, with the MWCNTs acting as 'molecular wires'. PVF films of varying surface coverages can be obtained by simply controlling the time a constant potential of +0.7 V (vs. Ag) wire is applied; with the characteristics of the derivatised MWCNTs examined by cyclic voltammetry and scanning electron microscopy. The application of the composite for glucose determination in aqueous solutions was investigated using linear sweep voltammetry, where it was found that the composites supported on glassy carbon substrates are superior to bare glassy carbon electrodes polymerised with PVF, likely due to the comparatively higher number of electrocatalytic centres in the former. This protocol was successfully transferred to prepare a PVF-MWCNT-paste electrode which was applied to glucose detection in diluted laked horse blood. The obtained results show potential and promising practical application for the polymer-derivatised MWCNT-modified electrodes in amperometric sensors for glucose determination.

Amperometric glucose biosensor based on gold-deposited polyvinylferrocene film on Pt electrode

The preparations and performances of the novel amperometric biosensors for glucose based on immobilized glucose oxidase (GOD) on modified Pt electrodes are described. Two types of modified electrodes for the enzyme immobilization were used in this study, polyvinylferrocene (PVF) coated Pt electrode and gold deposited PVF coated Pt electrode. A simple method for the immobilization of GOD enzyme on the modified electrodes was described. The enzyme electrodes developed in this study were called as PVF-GOD enzyme electrode and PVF-Au-GOD enzyme electrode, respectively. The amperometric responses of the enzyme electrodes were measured at constant potential, which was due to the electrooxidation of enzymatically produced H2O2. The electrocatalytic effects of the polymer, PVF, and the gold particles towards the electrooxidation of the enzymatically generated H2O2 offers sensitive and selective monitoring of glucose. The biosensor based on PVF-Au-GOD electrode has 6.6 times larger maximum current, 3.8 times higher sensitivity and 1.6 times larger linear working portion than those of the biosensor based on PVF-GOD electrode. The effects of the applied potential, the thickness of the polymeric film, the amount of the immobilized enzyme, pH, the amount of the deposited Au, temperature and substrate concentration on the responses of the biosensors were investigated. The optimum pH was found to be pH 7.4 at 25 degrees C. Finally the effects of interferents, stability of the biosensors and applicability to serum analysis of the biosensor were also investigated.
