Dynamic force measurements for a high bar using 3D motion capturing

DYNAMIC ANALYSIS OF THREE DIFFERENT HIGH BAR DISMOUNTS IN THE SIMMECHANICS ENVIRONMENT

This study compares certain kinematic and kinetic parameters in giant circles performed before twisting, double stretched and double tucked dismounts using the dynamic model in the SimMechanics environment. The joint moments calculated using the designed model were investigated for the three different dismounts. The study included a 13-year-old voluntary national gymnast with seven years of training history. Markers were placed on the wrist, elbow, shoulder, hip, knee and ankle joints of the gymnast. The gymnast was asked to perform twisting, double stretched and double tucked dismounts. MATLAB and SimMechanics were used to calculate joint moments. The moves were simulated and the joint moments during the moves were calculated using the SimMechanics toolbox. The study observed that the highest joint moment was in the wrist joint in all three dismounts, in line with the findings of previous studies. However, unlike other studies, higher joint moments were calculated in the accelerated giant circle performed together with thrusts, compared with the regular giant circle. While there were similar maximum moment values in twisting dismounts and double tucked dismounts, an almost three times higher moment was observed in double stretched dismounts. In terms of joint moments, stretched dismount is obviously the most difficult move, which is consistent with the difficulty levels. A recorded performance of the mechanical model created in the SimMechanics environment was investigated in terms of the twist angle and moments generated on the bar, and found to be sufficient and useful. However, there are certain restrictions regarding the methods employed in this study. We concluded that the mechanical model will allow for the performance of kinematic and kinetic analyses of different gymnasts and types of moves thanks to its flexible structure.

Occlusion trajectory and a concept of a device for testing operating life of dentures

PURPOSE

This paper presents an original method for the assessment of occlusion trajectory. On this basis, a special device for the assessment of operating life of dentures was designed.

MATERIAL/METHODS

For this purpose, the SMART system by BTS for a comprehensive movement analysis was used. In order to analyze occlusion trajectory, characteristic points on patients' heads were appointed in which markers were placed, in accordance with the rules of measurement in dentistry. Markers' movement was recorded by means of 6 cameras, and then composition of coordinates was performed in a 3D system.

RESULTS

In this way, curves representing movements of the characteristic points were plotted which, after the composition, with a considerable approximation, can be regarded as occlusion trajectory.

CONCLUSIONS

On the basis of the obtained results, a thesis was put forward to the effect that traditional tribological testing machines based on systems of the pin-on-disc, ball-on-disc, etc. types, due to the simplicity of their working movements, are not adequately precise for the purpose of operational assessment of elements of prosthodontics. On this basis, a tribological node for a specialist testing machine for the assessment of operating life of dentures was designed.

Mechanical behaviour of cross-country ski racing poles during double poling

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the behaviour of cross-country ski poles during double poling on a treadmill using three-dimensional kinematics. The results were compared with standard laboratory tests of the pole manufacturers. A total of 18 skiers were analysed at two speeds (85% and 95% of the maximal speed) at grades of 1.5% and 7%. Variables describing cycle characteristics, bending stiffness, bending behaviour, and trajectories of the pole markers were analysed. Triangular-shaped poles demonstrated the greatest stiffness and lowest variability in maximal bending. Softer poles demonstrated greater variability in bending behaviour and lost ground contact at high skiing speeds, which for some skiers resulted in failure to complete high-speed tests. Considerable variations in pole behaviour for similar poles between skiers were observed, which might be attributed to differences in technique, indicating that mechanical properties of the poles did not exclusively determine pole behaviour in the dynamic situation. The greatest magnitude of pole bending was in the middle part of the pole, which differed from the standard static pole analysis of the manufacturer. Increases in grade demonstrated the greatest effect on pole bending. Distinct differences from the pole manufacturers' laboratory measures were apparent, suggesting that basic pole testing might be adapted.

Cinemática de variáveis de técnica-chave nos flic flacs de ginastas de elite

INTRODUÇÃO: A ginástica é o esporte de habilidades fechadas mais antigo e espetacular. Contudo, parâmetros técnicos de execução geralmente são somente ensinados por treinadores experientes. Desta maneira, existe uma lacuna de informações objetivas sobre o desempenho de ginastas (referências cinemáticas). OBJETIVO: No presente estudo, tentamos quantificar movimentos de inversão linear e de hiperextensão durante a execução de flic flacs. MÉTODOS: Foi efetuada uma detecção não invasiva de flic flacs com o auxílio de um instrumento óptico eletrônico 3D. Treze marcadores esféricos retrorreflexivos (1 cm de diâmetro) foram posicionados no corpo de 9 ginastas experientes: maléolos laterais direito e esquerdo, cabeça da fíbula, trocanter maior, acrômio, olecrano, processo estiloide da ulna e vértex. Na mesma sessão e após um período de aquecimento, cada participante executou 15 repetições de flic flacs. Dez repetições forma analisadas, e os trajetos 3D das 13 manobras medidos. RESULTADOS: Em média, os homens obtiveram altura vertical maior (mulheres, 62% da altura; homens, 58%). O alinhamento dos membros inferiores foi homogêneo entre os ginastas: ângulos posteriores de joelho variaram entre 80° e 118°. Nenhuma abdução de membro inferior foi observada: a largura de joelho foi 7 cm menor do que a largura intertrocanter; a largura de tornozelo foi 8 cm menor do que a largura de joelho. Na saída do movimento, o ângulo tronco-coxa apresentou excelente alinhamento corporal, com valores bem próximos de 180°. As mulheres executaram a fase de apoio das mãos com pulsos mais próximos do que os homens (homens, 134% de largura de ombro; mulheres, 121%). CONCLUSÃO: Os resultados podem fornecer informações para melhor conhecimento, definindo assim, a execução de padrão-ouro obtida de ginastas de elite com poucas lesões.

Between-subject variability of muscle synergies during a complex motor skill

The purpose of the present study was to determine whether subjects who have learned a complex motor skill exhibit similar neuromuscular control strategies. We studied a population of experienced gymnasts during backward giant swings on the high bar. This cyclic movement is interesting because it requires learning, as untrained subjects are unable to perform this task. Nine gymnasts were tested. Both kinematics and electromyographic (EMG) patterns of 12 upper-limb and trunk muscles were recorded. Muscle synergies were extracted by non-negative matrix factorization (NMF), providing two components: muscle synergy vectors and synergy activation coefficients. First, the coefficient of correlation (r) and circular cross-correlation (r(max)) were calculated to assess similarities in the mechanical patterns, EMG patterns, and muscle synergies between gymnasts. We performed a further analysis to verify that the muscle synergies (in terms of muscle synergy vectors or synergy activation coefficients) extracted for one gymnast accounted for the EMG patterns of the other gymnasts. Three muscle synergies explained 89.9 ± 2.0% of the variance accounted for (VAF). The coefficients of correlation of the muscle synergy vectors among the participants were 0.83 ± 0.08, 0.86 ± 0.09, and 0.66 ± 0.28 for synergy #1, #2, and #3, respectively. By keeping the muscle synergy vectors constant, we obtained an averaged VAF across all pairwise comparisons of 79 ± 4%. For the synergy activation coefficients, r(max)-values were 0.96 ± 0.03, 0.92 ± 0.03, and 0.95 ± 0.03, for synergy #1, #2, and #3, respectively. By keeping the synergy activation coefficients constant, we obtained an averaged VAF across all pairwise comparisons of 72 ± 5%. Although variability was found (especially for synergy #3), the gymnasts exhibited gross similar neuromuscular strategies when performing backward giant swings. This confirms that the muscle synergies are consistent across participants, even during a skilled motor task that requires learning.

Shoulder muscles recruitment during a power backward giant swing on high bar: a wavelet-EMG-analysis

This study aimed at determining the upper limb muscles coordination during a power backward giant swing (PBGS) and the recruitment pattern of motor units (MU) of co-activated muscles. The wavelet transformation (WT) was applied to the surface electromyographic (EMG) signal of eight shoulder muscles. Total gymnast's body energy and wavelet synergies extracted from the WT-EMG by using a non-negative matrix factorization were analyzed as a function of the body position angle of the gymnast. A cross-correlation analysis of the EMG patterns allowed determining two main groups of co-activated muscles. Two wavelet synergies representing the main spectral features (82% of the variance accounted for) discriminated the recruitment of MU. Although no task-group of MU was found among the muscles, it appeared that a higher proportion of fast MU was recruited within the muscles of the first group during the upper part of the PBGS. The last increase of total body energy before bar release was induced by the recruitment of the muscles of the second group but did not necessitate the recruitment of a higher proportion of fast MU. Such muscle coordination agreed with previous simulations of elements on high bar as well as the findings related to the recruitment of MU.
