Abstract
Understanding the contribution vision has to dynamic balance control may help in understanding where/why loss of balance occurs during everyday locomotion. The current study determined how body-centre-of-mass (BCoM) dynamics and postural stability when moving to and holding a single-limb-stance (SS) or an up-on-the-toes (UTT) position were affected by visual occlusion. From standing on a force platform, 18 adults (mean (SD) 26.7 (4.8) years; 1.73 (0.08) m; 84.0 (22.9) kg; 7 females) completed repeated trials (x3) with and without vision in which they moved to either a SS or an UTT position (order countered-balanced), and attempted to hold that position for 2 (SS) or 5 (UTT) seconds before returning to standing. UTT trials were also repeated at a fast speed, and SS trials were repeated using both the dominant and non-dominant limb. BCoM dynamics were assessed by analysing the displacement and peak velocity of the centre-of-pressure (CoP) when moving to and from the SS and UTT positions. Balance stability was the variability in the CoP displacement/velocity when holding these positions. Results indicate that under visual occlusion, the peak CoP velocity when moving to the SS or UTT position was reduced (ES, 0.67 and 0.68, respectively), suggesting greater caution. Both the variability in the CoP displacement/velocity when holding these positions and the peak CoP velocity when returning to flat-standing increased (SS: ES, 1.0 and 0.86, respectively; UTT: ES 1.26 and 0.66, respectively), suggesting, respectively, greater instability and poorer control. The poorer control in SS trials, occurred when returning to standing from the SS position held on the non-dominant limb, and correspondingly, the reduction in SS duration when vision was occluded was greater for the non-dominant limb trails (limb-vision interaction; p = 0.042). This suggests that movements initiated/controlled by the non-dominant limb are more reliant on visual feedback than those initiated/controlled by the dominant limb.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Patients with haemophilia (PwH) are at increased risk of falls due to haemophilic arthropathy. Yet, studies on clinical tests associated with the risk of falling are scarce in PwH. AIMS (1) To evaluate the feasibility of different clinical motor performance tests associated with the risk of falling in PwH; (2) to evaluate PwH's performance of these tests compared to a control group; (3) to identify possible influencing factors that affect performance. METHODS Twenty-nine severe and moderate PwH (57.0 years, IQR: 48.0-61.5) and 29 healthy age- and BMI-matched control participants (CG) performed 13 different clinical tests (SPPB, timed up and go, push and release, functional reach, single-leg stance, knee and grip strength). Haemophilia joint health score (HJHS), kinesiophobia (TSK-11), subjective physical performance (HEP-Test-Q), falls efficiency (FES-I) and falls were assessed. RESULTS No adverse events occurred. PwH showed impaired performance in all clinical tests, a lower falls efficiency and a higher HJHS than CG. PwH with higher HJHS, lower HEP-Test-Q and higher TSK-11 scores showed higher deficits. Largest discrepancies were observed in the single-leg stance with eyes open and knee extensor strength, where orthopaedically majorly affected PwH showed worse performance compared to minorly affected PwH and the CG, respectively. The prevalence of ≥1 fall in the last year was 27.6% (PwH) and 10.3% (CG). CONCLUSION These clinical tests are feasible in PwH. Impaired joint status, a high kinesiophobia and low physical performance impair performance. These tests can be used by clinicians for gaining specific information on functional motor abilities of patients.

Abstract
Background Humans continuously maintain and adjust posture during gait, standing, and sitting. The difficulty of postural control is reportedly increased during unstable stances, such as unipedal standing and with closed eyes. Although balance is slightly impaired in healthy young adults in such unstable stances, they rarely fall. The brain recognizes the change in sensory inputs and outputs motor commands to the musculoskeletal system. However, such changes in cortical activity associated with the maintenance of balance following periods of instability require further clarified. Methods In this study, a total of 15 male participants performed two postural control tasks and the center of pressure displacement and electroencephalogram were simultaneously measured. In addition, the correlation between amplitude of center of pressure displacement and power spectral density of electroencephalogram was analyzed. Results The movement of the center of pressure was larger in unipedal standing than in bipedal standing under both eye open and eye closed conditions. It was also larger under the eye closed condition compared with when the eyes were open in unipedal standing. The amplitude of high-frequency bandwidth (1-3 Hz) of the center of pressure displacement was larger during more difficult postural tasks than during easier ones, suggesting that the continuous maintenance of posture was required. The power spectral densities of the theta activity in the frontal area and the gamma activity in the parietal area were higher during more difficult postural tasks than during easier ones across two postural control tasks, and these correlate with the increase in amplitude of high-frequency bandwidth of the center of pressure displacement. Conclusions Taken together, specific activation patterns of the neocortex are suggested to be important for the postural maintenance during unstable stances.

Abstract
Background: The 4-Stage Balance test is one of the most commonly used tests to assess balance for older adults. Although it is generally accepted that the four positions (including side-by-side (SBSS), semi-tandem (STS), tandem (TS), and single-leg stance (SLS)) in this test are progressively more difficult, there are no studies comparing the balance parameters of the four positions in older adults to prove this result. The purpose of this study is to determine the difficulty of 4 positions in the 4-Stage Balance test and the effect of the dominant and non-dominant lower extremities on static balance among healthy older adults; Methods: A total of 115 community-dwelling healthy older adults were included. The postural parameters (including sway range standard deviation (SR), velocity of body sway (V), total sway area (TSA) and sway perimeter (TSP) of the center of pressure) were measured during 8 static postures (including SBSS, left STS, right STS, left TS, right TS, left SLS, right SLS and comfortable stance (CS)). Repeated measures ANOVA was used to analyze the postural parameters in 8 static postures; Results: The static balance stability of the five stances in older adults can be ranked in the following sequence: CS > SBSS/STS > TS > SLS. Moreover, changing foot placement in STS, TS and SLS tasks has no influence on stability. This study has been registered in China Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR2200065803). Conclusions: Our findings suggest that it is feasible to simplify the 4-Stage Balance test to a 3-Stage Balance test in the older adults.

Abstract
The obturator nerve originates from the lumbar plexus and innervates sensation in the thigh and movement of the adductor muscle group of the hip. Reports on physical therapy for patients with obturator nerve injuries have been limited due to insufficient injuries, and there have been no reports on rehabilitation after neurotmesis. Furthermore, there are no reports on the status of activities of daily living (ADL) and details of physical therapy in patients with paralysis of the adductor muscle group. In this study, we reported on a patient with adductor paralysis due to obturator neurotmesis, including the clinical symptoms, characteristics of ADL impairment, and effective movement instruction. The patient is a woman in her 40's who underwent laparoscopic total hysterectomy, bilateral adnexectomy, and pelvic lymph node dissection for uterine cancer (grade-2 endometrial carcinoma). During pelvic lymph node dissection, she developed an obturator nerve injury. She underwent nerve grafting during the same surgery by the microsurgeon. Donor nerve was the ipsilateral sural nerve with a 3-cm graft length. Due to obturator nerve palsy, postoperative manual muscle test results were as follows: adductor magnus muscle, 1; pectineus muscle, 1; adductor longs muscle, 0; adductor brevis muscle, 0; and gracilis muscle, 0. On postoperative day 6, the patient could independently perform ADL; however, she was at risk of falling toward the affected side when putting on and taking off her shoes while standing on the affected leg. The patient was discharged on postoperative day 8. Through this case, we clarified the ADL impairment of a patient with adductor muscle palsy following obturator neurotmesis, and motion instruction was effective as physical therapy for this disability. This case suggests that movement instruction is important for acute rehabilitation therapy for patients with hip adductor muscle group with obturator neurotmesis.

Abstract
Flexibility, specifically that in the amplitude of sagittal-plane range of motion (ROM), can improve jump landing patterns and reduce the potential for sports injury. The use of floss bands (FLOSS) reportedly increases joint range of motion (ROM) in the shoulder, ankle, and elbow joints. However, little research on the effectiveness of FLOSS on the knee joint has been conducted. This study investigated the effects of FLOSS on knee ROM, static balance, single-leg-hop distance, and landing stabilization performance in women. This study had a crossover design. Twenty active female college students without musculoskeletal disorders were randomly assigned to receive a FLOSS intervention or elastic bandage (ELA) control on their dominant knees. The participants underwent FLOSS and ELA activities on two occasions with 48 h of rest between both sets of activities. The outcomes were flexibility of the quadriceps and hamstrings, how long one could maintain a single-leg stance (with and without eyes closed), distance on a single-leg triple hop, and score on the Landing Error Scoring System (LESS); these outcomes were evaluated at preintervention and postintervention (immediately following band removal and 20 min later). After the FLOSS intervention, the participants’ hamstring flexibility improved significantly (immediately after: p = 0.001; 20 min later: p = 0.002), but their quadricep flexibility did not. In addition, FLOSS use did not result in worse single-leg stance timing, single-leg triple-hop distance, or landing stabilization performance relative to ELA use. Compared with the ELA control, the FLOSS intervention yielded significantly better LESS at 20 min postintervention (p = 0.032), suggesting that tissue flossing can improve landing stability. In conclusion, the application of FLOSS to the knee improves hamstring flexibility without impeding static balance, and improves single-leg hop distance and landing stabilization performance in women for up to 20 min. Our findings elucidate the effects of tissue flossing on the knee joint and may serve as a reference for physiotherapists or athletic professionals in athletic practice settings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The role of the measurements of postural stability in the context of screening for ankle sprain risk is still equivocal. Transient characteristics of body sway have been suggested as an alternative or an improvement to traditional whole-trial analyses. RESEARCH QUESTION Are transient characteristics of body sway sensitive to the history of ankle sprain?. METHODS The assessment of 30-s single-leg body sway was performed on a group of 93 athletes from basketball, soccer, tennis and running who reported at least 1 ankle sprain in the last 12 months, while a group of 244 athletes from the same disciplines served as a control group without an ankle sprain reported for the same time period. We considered the mean center-of-pressure (CoP) velocity, CoP amplitude and CoP frequency. In addition to traditional whole-trial variables, we calculated the relative differences between the 1 st and the 2nd (DIF_21) and 1 st and 3rd (DIF_31) 10-s time intervals within the whole trial. RESULTS The indexes of transient characteristics of body sway (i.e., the DIF_21 and DIF_31) were in trivial or weak correlations with whole-trial variables (all r ≤ 0.29). Athletes with ankle sprain history exhibited smaller CoP ML velocity (p = 0.002) and larger CoP ML frequency (p = 0.001). In the injured group, the injured leg exhibited lower total and medial-lateral (ML) CoP velocity (p = 0.005-0.040), as well as lower CoP ML amplitude (p = 0.002) and higher CoP ML frequency (p = 0.010). The transient characteristics of body sway (DIF_21 and DIF_31) were very similar between the groups and between the injured and uninjured legs. SIGNIFICANCE Transient characteristics of body sway do not appear to differentiate the athletes with and without a history of ankle sprain. Further research is needed to confirm if the transient characteristics of body sway could be used for detection of risk of falls in older adults or assessment of athletic performance.

Abstract
Background Knee osteoarthritis (OA) negatively affects dynamic postural control, which is a basic function that individuals use to perform activities of daily living (ADL). The purpose of this study was to investigate the associations of center of pressure (COP) control during the transition from double-leg to single-leg standing with subjective assessments of ADL and quality of life (QOL) in patients with knee OA. Methods Thirty-six patients (29 females) with moderate-to-severe knee OA participated. Dynamic postural control was evaluated during the transition from double-leg to single-leg standing. Each patient stood on a force plate, lifted the less affected limb as fast as possible, and maintained single-leg standing with the more affected limb. The COP movements corresponding to anticipatory postural adjustment (APA) and transitional phases were assessed. The maximum displacement and peak velocity of the COP movements in the medial–lateral direction were calculated. The Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) was used for the subjective assessment of ADL and QOL. Pearson’s product correlation analysis was performed to investigate the associations of COP movements in the APA and transitional phases with KOOS-ADL and KOOS-QOL. Results In the APA phase, the maximum COP displacement was significantly correlated with KOOS-ADL (r = -0.353, P = 0.035) and KOOS-QOL (r = -0.379, P = 0.023). In the transitional phase, the maximum COP displacement and peak COP velocity were significantly correlated with KOOS-ADL (maximum displacement: r = 0.352, P = 0.035; peak velocity: r = 0.438, P = 0.008) and with KOOS-QOL (maximum displacement: r = 0.357, P = 0.032; peak velocity: r = 0.343, P = 0.040). Conclusions The present study showed that smaller COP movements in the APA phase and smaller and slower COP movements in the transitional phase correlated with poorer ADL and QOL conditions in patients with knee OA. These findings suggest that poor dynamic postural control is associated with poor ADL and QOL conditions in patients with moderate-to-severe medial knee OA. Conservative treatment for patients with knee OA may need to focus on dynamic postural control during the transition from double-leg to single-leg standing.

Abstract
Quantitative assessment is crucial for the evaluation of human postural balance. The force plate system is the key quantitative balance assessment method. The purpose of this study is to review the important concepts in balance assessment and analyze the experimental conditions, parameter variables, and application scope based on force plate technology. As there is a wide range of balance assessment tests and a variety of commercial force plate systems to choose from, there is room for further improvement of the test details and evaluation variables of the balance assessment. The recommendations presented in this article are the foundation and key part of the postural balance assessment; these recommendations focus on the type of force plate, the subject's foot posture, and the choice of assessment variables, which further enriches the content of posturography. In order to promote a more reasonable balance assessment method based on force plates, further methodological research and a stronger consensus are still needed.

Abstract
Instrumented assessments of quiet-stance postural control typically involve recording and analyzing of body sway signal, most often the center of pressure (CoP) movement. It has been recently suggested that transient characteristics of body sway may offer additional information regarding postural control. In this study, we explored the relationship between whole-trial estimates of body sway (CoP velocity, amplitude, and frequency) and corresponding transient behavior indexes, as well as the effects of leg preference. A total of 705 healthy young athletes performed 30 s single-leg body sway trials for both legs. It was found that the transient characteristics of the body sway (expressed as relative differences between individual time intervals within the trial) are in negligible or weak correlation (r ≤ 0.26) with the corresponding variables, averaged across the whole trial. All CoP variables showed transient characteristics, reflected in statistically significant decrease (CoP velocity and amplitude) or increase (CoP frequency) throughout the trial. The preferred leg showed smaller body sway; however, the effect sizes were very small. Moreover, differences between the legs were also noted in terms of transient characteristics of body sway. In particular, the preferred leg showed earlier reduction in anterior–posterior body sway and larger reduction in medial–lateral body sway. Further studies should focus on examining the clinical utility of indexes of transient behavior of body sway, for instance, their sensitivity to aging-related changes and risk of falling.
