Bimetallic Gold–Palladium vapour derived catalysts: The role of structural features on their catalytic activity

Bimetallic gold and palladium nanoparticles supported on copper oxide nanorods for enhanced H2O2 catalytic reduction and sensing

The emergence of nanoscience and nanotechnology has revitalised research interest in using copper and its derived nanostructures to find exciting and novel applications. In this work, mono- and bimetallic gold and palladium nanoparticles supported on copper oxide nanorods (CuONRs) were prepared and their catalytic performance towards the reduction of H2O2 to form reactive oxygen radical species (ROS) was evaluated. The characterisation using microscopy and spectroscopic techniques confirms the successful synthesis of CuONRs, CuONRs@Au6NPs, CuONRs@Pd6NPs and CuONRs@Au3Pd3NPs. The efficient generation of ROS was confirmed using UV-vis spectroscopy and 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran (DPBF) as a radical scavenger. The CuONRs possess excellent catalytic reduction activity for H2O2 by generating ROS. However, CuONRs also have lattice oxygens which do not participate in the catalytic reduction step. The lattice oxygens however allowed for the adsorption of gold and palladium nanoparticles (Au6NPs, Pd6NPs and Au3Pd3NPs) and thus enhanced catalytic reduction of H2O2 to produce ROS. The produced ROS was subsequently involved in the catalytic oxidation of a chromogenic substrate (TMB), resulting in blue coloured diimine (TMBDI) complex which was monitored using UV-vis and could also be observed using the naked eye. The catalyst dependence on pH, temperature, and H2O2 concentration towards efficient ROS generation was investigated. The gold and palladium-supported CuONRs nanocatalysts were evaluated for their potential applications in the fabrication of colorimetric biosensors to detect glucose oxidation by glucose oxidase (GOx). Glucose was used as a model analyte. The enzymatic reaction between GOx and β-d-glucose produces H2O2 as a by-product, which is then catalytically converted to ROS by the nanoparticles.

Catalytic Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohol to Benzaldehyde on Au8 and Au6Pd2 Clusters: A DFT Study on the Reaction Mechanism

Density functional theory calculations were performed to investigate the reaction mechanism of the aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde catalyzed by Au and Au–Pd clusters. Two consecutive reaction mechanisms were examined with Au8 and Au6Pd2 clusters: (1) the oxidation of benzyl alcohol with dissociated O atoms on metal clusters generating benzaldehyde and H2O; and (2) oxidation with adsorbed oxygen molecules generating benzaldehyde and H2O2. The calculations show that the aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol energetically prefers to proceed in the former mechanism, which agrees with the experimental observation. We demonstrate that the role of Au centers around the activation of molecular oxygen to peroxide-like species, which are capable of the H–abstraction of benzyl alcohol. The roles of Pd in the Au6Pd2 cluster are: (1) increasing the electron distribution to neighboring Au atoms, which facilitates the activation of O2; and (2) stabilizing the adsorption complex and transition states by the interaction between positively charged Pd atoms and the π-bond of benzyl alcohol, both of which are the origin of the lower energy barriers than those of Au8.

Catalytic C-H aerobic and oxidant-induced oxidation of alkylbenzenes (including toluene derivatives) over VO2+ immobilized on core-shell Fe3O4@SiO2 at room temperature in water

Direct C–H bond oxidation of organic materials, and producing the necessary oxygenated compounds under mild conditions, has attracted increasing interest. The selective oxidation of various alkylbenzenes was carried out by means of a new catalyst containing VO²⁺ species supported on silica-coated Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles using t-butyl hydroperoxide as an oxidant at room temperature in H₂O or solvent-free media. The chemical and structural characterization of the catalyst using several methods such as FTIR spectroscopy, XRD, FETEM, FESEM, SAED, EDX and XPS showed that VO²⁺ is covalently bonded to the silica surface. High selectivity and excellent conversion of various toluene derivatives, with less reactive aliphatic (sp³) C–H bonds, to related benzoic acids were quite noticeable. The aerobic oxygenation reaction of these alkylbenzenes was studied under the same conditions. All the results accompanied by sustainability of the inexpensive and simple magnetically separable heterogeneous catalyst proved the important criteria for commercial applications.

Cinnamyl Alcohol Oxidation Using Supported Bimetallic Au–Pd Nanoparticles: An Optimization of Metal Ratio and Investigation of the Deactivation Mechanism Under Autoxidation Conditions

The aerobic oxidation of cinnamyl alcohol in toluene under autoxidation conditions has been studied using a range of 1 wt% Au–Pd/TiO2 catalysts. The catalysts have been studied to determine the effect of preparation method (impregnation and sol immobilisation) and metal ratio on the conversion of cinnamyl alcohol and the selectivity to cinnamaldehyde. The catalysts prepared by sol-immobilisation demonstrate higher selectivity to the desired aldehyde than the analogous impregnation materials. The most active catalyst was found to be 0.75 wt% Au–0.25 wt% Pd/TiO2 prepared by sol-immobilisation and this demonstrates the importance of metal ratio optimisation in this catalytic process. Furthermore, this metal ratio was found to be most stable under the reactions conditions with little change observed over multiple uses.

Optimising surface d charge of AuPd nanoalloy catalysts for enhanced catalytic activity

Understanding the catalytic mechanism of bimetallic nanocatalysts remains challenging. Here, we adopt an adsorbate mediated thermal reduction approach to yield monodispersed AuPd catalysts with continuous change of the Pd-Au coordination numbers embedded in a mesoporous carbonaceous matrix. The structure of nanoalloys is well-defined, allowing for a direct determination of the structure-property relationship. The results show that the Pd single atom and dimer are the active sites for the base-free oxidation of primary alcohols. Remarkably, the d-orbital charge on the surface of Pd serves as a descriptor to the adsorbate states and hence the catalytic performance. The maximum d-charge gain occurred in a composition with 33-50 at% Pd corresponds to up to 9 times enhancement in the reaction rate compared to the neat Pd. The findings not only open an avenue towards the rational design of catalysts but also enable the identification of key steps involved in the catalytic reactions.

X-ray-induced reduction of Au ions in an aqueous solution in the presence of support materials and in situ time-resolved XANES measurements

Synchrotron X-ray-induced reduction of Au ions in an aqueous solution with or without support materials is reported. To clarify the process of radiation-induced reduction of metal ions in aqueous solutions in the presence of carbon particles as support materials, in situ time-resolved XANES measurements of Au ions were performed under synchrotron X-ray irradiation. XANES spectra were obtained only when hydrophobic carbon particles were added to the precursor solution containing Au ions. Changes in the shape of the XANES spectra indicated a rapid reduction from ionic to metallic Au in the precursor solution owing to synchrotron X-ray irradiation. In addition, the effects of the wettability of the carbon particles on the deposited Au metallic spots were examined. The deposited Au metallic spots were different depending on the relationship of surface charges between metal precursors and support materials. Moreover, a Au film was obtained as a by-product only when hydrophilic carbon particles were added to the precursor solution containing the Au ions.
