Abstract
The world scenario regarding consumption and demand for products based on fossil fuels has demonstrated the imperative need to develop new technologies capable of using renewable resources. In this context, the use of biomass to obtain chemical intermediates and fuels has emerged as an important area of research in recent years, since it is a renewable source of carbon in great abundance. It has the benefit of not contributing to the additional emission of greenhouse gases since the CO2 released during the energy conversion process is consumed by it through photosynthesis. In the presented review, the authors provide an update of the literature in the field of biomass transformation with the use of niobium-containing catalysts, emphasizing the versatility of niobium compounds for the conversion of different types of biomass.

Abstract
Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries and lithium-selenium (Li-Se) batteries that contain only one single active element have unique advantages and disadvantages. Inspired by ternary lithium batteries, multielement chalcogenide compounds with integrated advantages may improve upon the performance of lithium-chalcogenide batteries at the source. In this work, activated carbon (AC) with an Al2O3@SiO2 heterojunction is used as the carrier, and the performances and mechanisms of elemental substances (X/AC, X = S, Se, and Te) are studied in ether and ester electrolytes as the basis for preparing multielement chalcogenide composites (SST/AC, SST: S-Se-Te compound). In the ester electrolyte system, SST811/AC (where S/Se/Te = 8:1:1, molar ratio) exhibited the best cycling performance, and the capacity remained at 1024.9 mA h g-1 after 300 cycles. The characterization results revealed the mechanisms and sequences of the gradual liquid-phase reactions of SST/AC in ether electrolytes and the direct solid-phase reactions in ester electrolytes. The active elements in SST/AC fully demonstrated their own functions, enabling the effective construction of new lithium-chalcogenide battery systems. This work provides inspiration for the subsequent research of multielement lithium-chalcogenide batteries and paves the way for their application.

Abstract
The valuable products produced from glycerol transformation have become a research route that attracted considerable benefits owing to their huge volumes in recent decades (as a result of biodiesel production as a byproduct) as well as a myriad of chemical and biological techniques for transforming glycerol into high-value compounds, such as fuel additives, biofuels, precursors and other useful chemicals, etc. Biodiesel has presented another challenge in the considerable increase in its byproduct (glycerol). This review provides a recent update on the transformation of glycerol with an exclusive focus on the various catalysts’ performance in designing reaction operation conditions. The different products observed and cataloged in this review involved hydrogen, acetol, acrolein, ethylene glycol, and propylene glycol (1,3-propanediol and 1,2-propanediol) from reforming and dehydration and hydrogenolysis reactions of glycerol conversions. The future prospects and critical challenges are finally presented.

Abstract
The study of the deactivation of HY zeolites in the dehydration reaction of glycerol to acrolein has represented a challenge for the design of new catalysts. HY zeolites with SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratios between 3.5 and 80 were studied. The solids were characterized by XRD, N2 physisorption, SEM-EDXS, Raman and UV-vis spectroscopies, infrared spectroscopy of pyridine (FTIR-Py) and catalytic activity tests from 250 °C to 325 °C. It was found that the total amount of acid sites per unit area of catalyst decreased as the SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratio increased from 3.5 to 80, resulting in the decrease in the initial glycerol conversion. The initial acrolein selectivity was promoted with the increase of the Brønsted/Lewis acid sites ratio at any reaction temperature. The deactivation tests showed that the catalyst lifetime depended on the pore structure, improving with the presence of large surface areas as evidenced by the deactivation rate constants. The characterization of the deactivated catalysts by XRD, N2 physisorption and thermogravimetric analysis indicated that the deposition of coke resulted in the total obstruction of micropores and the partial blockage of mesopores. Moreover, the presence of large mesopores and surface areas allowed the amount of coke deposited at the catalyst surface to be reduced.

Abstract
Gas-phase glycerol dehydration over WO3/Al2O3 catalysts was investigated. WO3 loading on γ-Al2O3 significantly affected the yield of acrolein and the catalyst with 20 wt% WO3 loading showed the highest activity. The WO3/Al2O3 catalyst with 20 wt% WO3 loading showed higher activity and durability than the other supported WO3 catalysts and zeolites. The number of Brønsted acid sites and mesopores of the WO3/Al2O3 catalyst did not decrease after the reaction, suggesting that glycerol has continuous access to Brønsted acid sites inside the mesopores of WO3/Al2O3, thereby sustaining a high rate of formation of acrolein. Dehydration under O2 flow further increased the durability of the WO3/Al2O3 catalyst, enabling the sustainable formation of acrolein. In addition, the WO3/Al2O3 catalyst with 20 wt% WO3 loading showed high activity for the dehydration of various polyols to afford the corresponding products in high yield.

Abstract
The ever increasing industrial production of commodity and specialty chemicals inexorably depletes the finite primary fossil resources available on Earth. The forecast of population growth over the next 3 decades is a very strong incentive for the identification of alternative primary resources other than petro-based ones. In contrast with fossil resources, renewable biomass is a virtually inexhaustible reservoir of chemical building blocks. Shifting the current industrial paradigm from almost exclusively petro-based resources to alternative bio-based raw materials requires more than vibrant political messages; it requires a profound revision of the concepts and technologies on which industrial chemical processes rely. Only a small fraction of molecules extracted from biomass bears significant chemical and commercial potentials to be considered as ubiquitous chemical platforms upon which a new, bio-based industry can thrive. Owing to its inherent assets in terms of unique process experience, scalability, and reduced environmental footprint, flow chemistry arguably has a major role to play in this context. This review covers a selection of C2 to C6 bio-based chemical platforms with existing commercial markets including polyols (ethylene glycol, 1,2-propanediol, 1,3-propanediol, glycerol, 1,4-butanediol, xylitol, and sorbitol), furanoids (furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural) and carboxylic acids (lactic acid, succinic acid, fumaric acid, malic acid, itaconic acid, and levulinic acid). The aim of this review is to illustrate the various aspects of upgrading bio-based platform molecules toward commodity or specialty chemicals using new process concepts that fall under the umbrella of continuous flow technology and that could change the future perspectives of biorefineries.

Abstract
Very high glycerol conversion of 98.5% with ∼89% selectivity to propylene glycol was achieved at a very low pressure (0.72 MPa) over Cu–Zn/MgO catalyst for vapor phase hydrogenolysis of glycerol. Uniformly distributed partially reduced copper species (Cu2O, CuO, and Cu0) and higher basicity of the catalyst were the governing factors for higher selectivity to propylene glycol.

Abstract
Increasing worldwide biodiesel production has led to the generation of an important glycerol surplus, which needs to be valorized in order to improve the economic and environmental sustainability of the biodiesel industry. In this context, glycerol dehydration to acrolein by acid catalysis appears to be a potential route of glycerol valorization, since acrolein is an important intermediate for many chemical industries. The main drawback of this catalytic process is catalyst deactivation. Different alternatives have been proposed for overcoming it, such as the use of mesoporous materials in order to facilitate the diffusion of glycerol and reaction products, thus minimizing deactivation. This review compiles the main achievements of the use of mesoporous silica-containing materials that have been deployed either as a catalyst or for support in glycerol dehydration to acrolein. Thus, the effect of mesoporosity on both catalytic performance and deactivation will be discussed, as well as the blocking of pores by coke deposition.

Abstract
Solid acid catalysts based on WO3–SiO2 and WO3–ZrO2–SiO2 were prepared by one-pot non-hydrolytic sol–gel method and tested in the gas phase glycerol dehydration to acrolein. Their structural and textural characteristics were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption, X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (XEDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Their acid characteristics were studied by both temperature programmed desorption of ammonia (NH3-TPD) and FTIR of adsorbed pyridine. Under our operating conditions, all the catalysts were active and selective in the transformation of glycerol to acrolein, which was always the main reaction product. The high selectivity to acrolein is achieved on catalysts presenting a higher proportion of Brønsted acid sites. In addition, the role of oxygen in the feed on catalytic performance of these catalysts is also discussed. Active and selective W–Si–(Zr)–O catalysts for glycerol dehydration to acrolein have been successfully prepared by non-hydrolytic sol gel method.![]()

Abstract
Supported gold nanoparticles are highly selective catalysts for a range of both liquid-phase and gas-phase hydrogenation reactions. However, little is known about their stability during gas-phase catalysis and the influence of the support thereon. We report on the activity, selectivity, and stability of 2-4 nm Au nanoparticulate catalysts, supported on either TiO2 or SiO2, for the hydrogenation of 0.3% butadiene in the presence of 30% propene. Direct comparison of the stability of the Au catalysts was possible as they were prepared via the same method but on different supports. At full conversion of butadiene, only 0.1% of the propene was converted for both supported catalysts, demonstrating their high selectivity. The TiO2-supported catalysts showed a steady loss of activity, which was recovered by heating in air. We demonstrated that the deactivation was not caused by significant metal particle growth or strong metal-support interaction, but rather, it is related to the deposition of carbonaceous species under reaction conditions. In contrast, all the SiO2-supported catalysts were highly stable, with very limited formation of carbonaceous deposits. It shows that SiO2-supported catalysts, despite their 2-3 times lower initial activities, clearly outperform TiO2-supported catalysts within a day of run time.

Abstract
The design of suitable catalysts for the one-pot conversion of glycerol into acrylic acid (AA) is a complex matter, as only fine-tuning of the redox and acid properties makes it possible to obtain significant yields of AA. However, fundamental understanding behind the catalytic phenomenon is still unclear. Structure-reactivity correlations are clearly behind these results, and acid sites are involved in the dehydration of glycerol into acrolein with vanadium as the main (or only) redox element. For the first time, we propose an in-depth study to shed light on the molecular-level relations behind the overall catalytic results shown by several types of V-containing catalysts. Different multifunctional catalysts were synthesized, characterized (>X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, temperature-programmed reduction, and temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia), and tested in a flow reactor. Combining the obtained results with those acquired from an in situ FTIR spectroscopy study with acrolein (a reaction intermediate), it was possible to draw conclusions on the role played by the various physicochemical features of the different oxides in terms of the adsorption, surface reactions, and desorption of the reagents and reaction products.

Abstract
In this study, we investigated different metal pairings of Au nanoparticles (NPs) as potential catalysts for glycerol dehydration for the first time. All of the systems preferred the formation of hydroxyacetone (HYNE). Although the bimetallics that were tested, i.e., Au NPs supported on Ni, Fe and Cu appeared to be more active than the Au/SiO2 system, only Cu supported Au NPs gave high conversion (ca. 63%) and selectivity (ca. 70%) to HYNE.

Abstract
Glycerol surplus from biodiesel synthesis still represents a major problem in the biofuel production chain. Meanwhile, those in the acrylic acid market are looking for new processes that are able to offer viable alternatives to propylene-based production. Therefore, acrylic acid synthesis from glycerol could be an effective solution to both issues. Among the viable routes, one-pot synthesis theoretically represents the most efficient process, but it is also highly challenging from the catalyst design standpoint. A new class of complex W--Mo--V mixed-oxide catalysts, which are strongly related to the hexagonal tungsten bronze structure, able to directly convert glycerol into acrylic acid with yields of up to 51 % are reported.
