Abstract
Sustainable production of gasoline-range hydrocarbon fuels from biomass is critical in evading the upgradation of combustion engine infrastructures. The present work focuses on the selective transformation of n-butanol to gasoline-range hydrocarbons free from aromatics in a single step. Conversion of n-butanol was carried out in a down-flow fixed-bed reactor with the capability to operate at high pressures using the HZSM-5 catalyst. The selective transformation of n-butanol was carried out for a wide range of temperatures (523-563 K), pressures (1-40 bar), and weight hourly space velocities (0.75-14.96 h-1) to obtain the optimum operating conditions for the maximum yields of gasoline range (C5-C12) hydrocarbons. A C5-C12 hydrocarbons selectivity of ∼80% was achieved, with ∼11% and 9% selectivity to C3-C4 paraffin and C3-C4 olefins, respectively, under optimum operating conditions of 543 K, 0.75 h-1, and 20 bar. The hydrocarbon (C5-C12) product mixture was free from aromatics and primarily olefinic in nature. The distribution of these C5-C12 hydrocarbons depends strongly on the reaction pressure, temperature, and WHSV. These olefins were further hydrogenated to paraffins using a Ni/SiO2 catalyst. The fuel properties and distillation characteristics of virgin and hydrogenated hydrocarbons were evaluated and compared with those of gasoline to understand their suitability as a transportation fuel in an unmodified combustion engine. The present work further delineates the catalyst stability study for a long time-on-stream (TOS) and extensive characterization of spent catalysts to understand the nature of catalyst deactivation.

Abstract
Ni-based solids are effective catalysts for alkene dimerization, but the nature of active centers and identity and kinetic relevance of bound species and elementary reactions remain speculative and based on organometallic chemistry. Ni centers grafted onto ordered MCM-41 mesopores lead to well-defined monomers that are rendered stable by the presence of an intrapore nonpolar liquid, thus enabling accurate experimental inquiries and indirect evidence for grafted (Ni-OH)+ monomers. Density functional theory (DFT) treatments presented here confirm the plausible involvement of pathways and active centers not previously considered as mediators of high turnover rates for C2-C4 alkenes at cryogenic temperatures. (Ni-OH)+ species act as Lewis acid-base pairs that stabilize C-C coupling transition states by polarizing two alkenes in opposite directions via concerted interactions with the O and H atoms in these pairs. DFT-derived activation barriers for ethene dimerization (59 kJ mol-1) are similar to measured values (46 ± 5 kJ mol-1) and the weak binding of ethene on (Ni-OH)+ is consistent with kinetic trends that require sites to remain essentially bare at subambient temperatures and high alkene pressures (1-15 bar). DFT treatments of classical metallacycle and Cossee-Arlman dimerization routes (Ni+ and Ni2+-H grafted onto Al-MCM-41, respectively) show that such sites bind ethene strongly and lead to saturation coverages, in contradiction with observed kinetic trends. These C-C coupling routes at acid-base pairs in (Ni-OH)+ differ from molecular catalysts in (i) the type of elementary steps; (ii) the nature of active centers; and (iii) their catalytic competence at subambient temperatures without requiring co-catalysts or activators.

Abstract
Here, an ultra-highly active Ni-MOF-5 catalyst with high Ni loading for ethylene dimerization is reported. The Ni-MOF-5 catalysts are synthesized by a facile one-pot co-precipitation method at room temperature, where Ni2+ replaces Zn2+ in MOF-5. Unlike Zn2+ with tetrahedral coordination in MOF-5, Ni2+ is coordinated with extra solvent molecules except for four-oxygen from the framework. After removing coordinated solvent molecules, Ni-MOF-5 achieves an ethylene turnover frequency of 352 000 h-1 , corresponding to 9040 g of product per gram of catalyst per hour, at 35 °C and 50 bar, far exceeding the activities of all reported heterogeneous catalysts. The high Ni loading and full exposure structure account for the excellent catalytic performance. Isotope labeling experiments reveal that the catalytic process follows the Cossee-Arlman mechanism, rationalizing the high activity and selectivity of the catalyst. These results demonstrate that Ni-MOF-5 catalysts are very promising for industrial catalytic ethylene dimerization.

Abstract
Ni-H-Beta catalysts for ethylene oligomerization (EO) were prepared by ion exchange of NH4-Beta and H-Beta zeolites with aqueous Ni(NO3)2 and characterized by H2-temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), NH3-temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), and diffuse-reflectance infrared Fourier-transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). Quadruple exchange of NH4-Beta at 70 °C resulted in 2.5 wt.% Ni loading corresponding to a Ni2+/framework aluminum (FAl) molar ratio of 0.52. [NiOH]+ and H+ are the primary charge-compensating cations in the uncalcined catalyst, as evidenced by TPR and DRIFTS. Subsequent calcination at 550 °C in air yielded a Ni-H-Beta catalyst containing primarily bare Ni2+ ions bonded to framework oxygens. Quadruple exchange of H-Beta at 70 °C gave 2.0 wt.% Ni loading (Ni2+/FAl = 0.41). After calcination at 550 °C, the resulting Ni-H-Beta catalyst comprises a mixture of bare Ni2+ ions: [NiOH]+ and NiO species. The relative abundance of [NiOH]+ increases with the number of exchanges. In situ pretreatment at 500 °C in flowing He converted the [NiOH]+ species to bare Ni2+ ions via dehydration. The bare Ni2+ ions interact strongly with the Beta framework as evidenced by a perturbed antisymmetric T-O-T vibration at 945 cm−1. DRIFT spectra of CO adsorbed at 20 °C indicate that the Ni2+ ions occupy two distinct exchange positions. The results of EO testing at 225 °C and 11 bar (ethylene) suggested that the specific Ni2+ species initially presented (e.g., bare Ni2+, [NiOH]+) did not significantly affect the catalytic performance.

Abstract
The present work studies the adsorption of ethylene on Ni-H-Beta particles to unravel the roles of nickel and Brønsted sites in the catalytic oligomerization of ethylene. Three models (i.e., two based on the Cossee–Arlman mechanism and one based on the metallacycle mechanism) are examined in terms of the nature of the active sites and the adsorption mechanism involved in the ethylene coordination step. The results are consistent with the participation of two active sites in the formation of [Ni(II)-H]+ Cossee–Arlman centers and also suggest that ethylene dissociates upon adsorption on [Ni(II)-H]+ sites. Further characterization of Ni-H-Beta catalysts prepared at different nickel loadings and silica-to-alumina ratios reveals that highly dispersed Ni2+ exists on the catalyst surface and interacts with the catalyst’s lattice oxygen and free NiO crystals. At the same time, the kinetic results indicate that Brønsted sites may form isolated nickel-hydride ([Ni(II)-H]+) centers on the catalyst surface. In addition, the presence of residual, noncoordinated Ni2+ and Brønsted sites (not involved in the formation of [Ni(II)-H]+ sites) shows a reduced probability of the formation of nickel-hydride sites, hindering the conversion rate of ethylene. A mechanism for forming [Ni(II)-H]+ centers is proposed, involving ethylene adsorption over Ni2+ and a Brønsted site. This research has important implications for improving ethylene oligomerization processes over nickel-based heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract
Non-precious metal supported catalytically active liquid metal solutions exhibit attractive performance in ethylene oligomerization. It is found for the Ga-Ni system on silica that the performance depends strongly on the applied Ga/Ni ratio. Ga-rich systems forming liquid alloys exhibit a far higher Ni-based catalytic activity than solid intermetallic compounds or Ni nanoparticles.

Influence of Remaining Acid Sites of an Amorphous Aluminosilicate on the Oligomerization of n-Butenes after Impregnation with Nickel Ions. Catalysts 2020. Abstract
Highly linear octene isomers can be produced from n-butene on industrial scale by using Ni-containing aluminosilicates as heterogeneous catalysts. These catalysts can be prepared by impregnating an aluminosilicate with a Ni(II) salt solution. This leads to a competition between acid-catalyzed and nickel-catalyzed reactions. In this study it is shown that some octene isomers are exclusively formed via an acid-catalyzed mechanism as a result of methyl group migration at the surface of a mesoporous catalyst. Specifically, the isomers 4,4-dimethylhexene (4,4-DMH) and 3-ethyl-2-methylpentene (3E-2MP) exhibit a systematic correlation compared to the amount of 3,4-dimethylhexene (3,4-DMH) formed at acid sites. By analyzing the ratio of 4,4-DMH and/or 3E-2MP to 3,4-DMH in the product spectrum before and after impregnation with a nickel precursor, the extend of acid site covered by nickel ions can be evaluated.

Hydrocracking of Polyethylene to Jet Fuel Range Hydrocarbons over Bifunctional Catalysts Containing Pt- and Al-Modified MCM-48. REACTIONS 2020. Abstract
A low-density polyethylene was hydrocracked to liquid hydrocarbons in autoclave reactors over catalysts containing Pt- and Al-modified MCM-48. Two kinds of Al-modified MCM-48 were synthesized for the reaction: Al-MCM-48 was synthesized using a sol–gel method by mixing Al(iso-OC3H7)3 with Si(OC2H5)4 and surfactant in a basic aqueous solution before hydrothermal synthesis, and Al/MCM-48 was synthesized using a post-modification method by grafting Al3+ ions on the surface of calcined Al/MCM-48. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns indicated that both Al-MCM-48 and Al/MCM-48 had a cubic mesoporous structure. The Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface areas of Al-MCM-48 and Al/MCM-48 were larger than 1000 m2/g. 27Al Magic Angle Spinning-NMR (MAS NMR) indicated that Al3+ in Al-MCM-48 was located inside the framework of mesoporous silica, but Al3+ in Al/MCM-48 was located outside the framework of mesoporous silica. The results of ammonia temperature-programmed desorption (NH3-TPD) showed that the acidic strength of various samples was in the order of H-Y > Al/MCM-48 > Al-MCM-48 > MCM-48. After 4 MPa H2 was charged in the autoclave at room temperature, 1 wt % Pt/Al/MCM-48 catalyst showed a high yield of C9−C15 jet fuel range hydrocarbons of 85.9% in the hydrocracking of polyethylene at 573 K for 4 h. Compared with the reaction results of Pt/Al/MCM-48, the yield of light hydrocarbons (C1−C8) increased over Pt/H-Y, and the yield of heavy hydrocarbons (C16−C21) increased over Pt/Al-MCM-48 in the hydrocracking of polyethylene. The yield of C9−C15 jet fuel range hydrocarbons over the used catalyst did not decrease compared to the fresh catalyst in the hydrocracking of polyethylene to jet fuel range hydrocarbons over Pt/Al/MCM-48.

Abstract
Brought to life more than half a century ago and successfully applied for high-value petrochemical intermediates production, nickel-catalyzed olefin oligomerization is still a very dynamic topic, with many fundamental questions to address and industrial challenges to overcome. The unique and versatile reactivity of nickel enables the oligomerization of ethylene, propylene, and butenes into a wide range of oligomers that are highly sought-after in numerous fields to be controlled. Interestingly, both homogeneous and heterogeneous nickel catalysts have been scrutinized and employed to do this. This rare specificity encouraged us to interlink them in this review so as to open up opportunities for further catalyst development and innovation. An in-depth understanding of the reaction mechanisms in play is essential to being able to fine-tune the selectivity and achieve efficiency in the rational design of novel catalytic systems. This review thus provides a complete overview of the subject, compiling the main fundamental/industrial milestones and remaining challenges facing homogeneous/heterogeneous approaches as well as emerging catalytic concepts, with a focus on the last 10 years.

Abstract
The nickel (II) loading silica-alumina under various treatments in terms of aging temperature, Si/Al ratio and activation temperature were investigated by XRD, N2 adsorption-desorption, TEM, UV-Vis, NH3-TPD and XRF and then applied to catalyze the ethylene oligomerization. High aging temperature, low Si/Al ratio and high activation temperature were beneficial to high selectivity for C10+ products because of a reasonable match between Ni active sites and acid sites, high Ni loading content and less octahedral coordination Ni2+ species, respectively. Ni loading content was more important than the number of acid sites for high yield of C10+ products, and less octahedral coordination Ni2+ species favored less by-products produced at high reaction temperature. In addition, other experimental conditions, such as reaction temperature, weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) and nickel precursor were discussed in the paper.

We investigated the interactions between nickel oxide and silica–alumina supports, which were applied to the catalytic oligomerization of ethylene by powder X-ray diffraction, UV diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, H2 temperature-programmed reduction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The catalytic activity was also correlated with the acidity of catalysts determined by NH3 temperature-programmed desorption and pyridine FT-IR spectroscopy. Although all the catalysts had similar Ni contents, their catalytic performances were strongly influenced by the strength of the metal oxide–support interaction. Strong interaction promoted the formation of nickel aluminate on the catalyst surface, and resulted in low catalytic activity due to reducing the amount of nickel oxide active sites. However, weak interaction favored the aggregation of nickel oxide species into larger particles, and thus resulted in low ethylene conversion and selectivity to oligomers. Eventually, the optimal activity was realized at the medium interaction strength, preserving a high amount of both active nickel oxides and acid sites.
