Heterogeneous Iron-Based Catalysts for Organic Transformation Reactions: A Brief Overview

Iron (Fe) is considered to be one of the most significant elements due to its wide applications. Recent years have witnessed a burgeoning interest in Fe catalysis as a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to noble metal catalysis in organic synthesis. The abundance and low toxicity of Fe, coupled with its competitive reactivity and selectivity, underscore its appeal for sustainable synthesis. A lot of catalytic reactions have been performed using heterogeneous catalysts of Fe oxide hybridized with support systems like aluminosilicates, clays, carbonized materials, metal oxides or polymeric matrices. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the latest advancements in Fe-catalyzed organic transformation reactions. Highlighted areas include cross-coupling reactions, C-H activation, asymmetric catalysis, and cascade processes, showcasing the versatility of Fe across a spectrum of synthetic methodologies. Emphasis is placed on mechanistic insights, elucidating the underlying principles governing iron-catalyzed reactions. Challenges and opportunities in the field are discussed, providing a roadmap for future research endeavors. Overall, this review illuminates the transformative potential of Fe catalysis in driving innovation and sustainability in organic chemistry, with implications for drug discovery, materials science, and beyond.

Bioinspired microenvironment modulation of metal-organic framework-based catalysts for selective methane oxidation

Inspiration from natural enzymes enabling creationary catalyst design is appealing yet remains extremely challenging for selective methane (CH4) oxidation. This study presents the construction of a biomimetic catalyst platform for CH4 oxidation, which is constructed by incorporating Fe-porphyrin into a robust metal-organic framework, UiO-66, furnished with saturated monocarboxylic fatty acid bearing different long alkyl chains. The catalysts demonstrate the high efficiency in the CH4 to methanol (CH3OH) conversion at 50 °C. Moreover, the selectivity to CH3OH can be effectively regulated and promoted through a fine-tuned microenvironment by hydrophobic modification around the Fe-porphyrin. The long-chain fatty acids anchored on the Zr-oxo cluster of UiO-66 can not only tune the electronic state of the Fe sites to improve CH4 adsorption, but also restrict the amount of H2O2 around the Fe sites to reduce the overoxidation. This behavior resembles the microenvironment regulation in methane monooxygenase, resulting in high CH3OH selectivity.

Oxygen Reduction Reaction Activity in Non-Precious Single-Atom (M-N/C) Catalysts-Contribution of Metal and Carbon/Nitrogen Framework-Based Sites

We examine the performance of a number of single-atom M-N/C electrocatalysts with a common structure in order to deconvolute the activity of the framework N/C support from the metal M-N₄ sites in M-N/Cs. The formation of the N/C framework with coordinating nitrogen sites is performed using zinc as a templating agent. After the formation of the electrically conducting carbon-nitrogen metal-coordinating network, we (trans)metalate with different metals producing a range of different catalysts (Fe-N/C, Co-N/C, Ni-N/C, Sn-N/C, Sb-N/C, and Bi-N/C) without the formation of any metal particles. In these materials, the structure of the carbon/nitrogen framework remains unchanged-only the coordinated metal is substituted. We assess the performance of the subsequent catalysts in acid, near-neutral, and alkaline environments toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and ascribe and quantify the performance to a combination of metal site activity and activity of the carbon/nitrogen framework. The ORR activity of the carbon/nitrogen framework is about 1000-fold higher in alkaline than it is in acid, suggesting a change in mechanism. At 0.80 V_RHE, only Fe and Co contribute ORR activity significantly beyond that provided by the carbon/nitrogen framework at all pH values studied. In acid and near-neutral pH values (pH 0.3 and 5.2, respectively), Fe shows a 30-fold improvement and Co shows a 5-fold improvement, whereas in alkaline pH (pH 13), both Fe and Co show a 7-fold improvement beyond the baseline framework activity. The site density of the single metal atom sites is estimated using the nitrite adsorption and stripping method. This method allows us to deconvolute the framework sites and metal-based active sites. The framework site density of catalysts is estimated as 7.8 × 10¹⁸ sites g^-1. The metal M-N₄ site densities in Fe-N/C and Co-N/C are 9.4 × 10¹⁸ sites^-1 and 4.8 × 10¹⁸ sites g^-1, respectively.

Hybrid Materials Based on Imidazo[4,5-b]porphyrins for Catalytic Oxidation of Sulfides

Heterogenized metalloporphyrin catalysts for oxidation reactions are extensively explored to improve chemical production. In this work, manganese meso-tetraarylporphyrins were immobilized on hydrated mesoporous titanium dioxide (SBET = 705 m2 g−1) through carboxylate or phosphonate anchoring groups separated from the macrocycle by the 2-arylimidazole linker fused across one of the pyrrolic rings of the macrocycle. The element composition of two mesoporous hybrid materials thus obtained were investigated and the integrity of the immobilized complexes was shown by different physicochemical methods. Finally, the catalytic efficiency of the more stable material Mn(TMPIP)/TiO2 with the phosphonate anchor was evaluated in the selective oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides by molecular oxygen in the presence of isobutyraldehyde (IBA). The heterogenized complex has shown excellent catalytic activity exhibiting a turnover (TON) of ~1100 in a single catalytic run of the sulfoxidation of thioanisole. The catalyst was successfully reused in seven consecutive catalytic cycles.

Recent Advances in Carbon-Based Iron Catalysts for Organic Synthesis

Carbon-based iron catalysts combining the advantages of iron and carbon material are efficient and sustainable catalysts for green organic synthesis. The present review summarizes the recent examples of carbon-based iron catalysts for organic reactions, including reduction, oxidation, tandem and other reactions. In addition, the introduction strategies of iron into carbon materials and the structure and activity relationship (SAR) between these catalysts and organic reactions are also highlighted. Moreover, the challenges and opportunities of organic synthesis over carbon-based iron catalysts have also been addressed. This review will stimulate more systematic and in-depth investigations on carbon-based iron catalysts for exploring sustainable organic chemistry.

Using molecular oxygen and Fe–N/C heterogeneous catalysts to achieve Mukaiyama epoxidations via in situ produced organic peroxy acids and acylperoxy radicals

Non-precious metal Fe–N/C heterogeneous catalysts efficiently catalyse epoxidation at 25 °C and atmospheric pressure using oxygen as oxidant. The reaction is studied using on-line oxygen consumption, electrochemistry, and UV-vis spectroscopy.

Biomimetic Aerobic Epoxidation of Alkenes Catalyzed by Cobalt Porphyrin under Ambient Conditions in the Presence of Sunflower Seeds Oil as a Co-Substrate

In this work, a mild and sustainable catalytic aerobic epoxidation of alkenes catalyzed by cobalt porphyrin was performed in the presence of sunflower seeds oil. Under ambient conditions, the conversion rate of trans-stilbene reached 99%, and selectivity toward epoxide formation was 88%. The kinetic studies showed that the aerobic epoxidation followed the Michaelis-Menten kinetics. Mass spectroscopy and in situ electron spin resonance indicated that linoleic acid was converted to fatty aldehydes via hydroperoxide intermediates. A plausible mechanism of epoxidation of alkenes was accordingly proposed.
