Catalytic properties of intermetallic platinum-tin nanoparticles with non-stoichiometric compositions

Thermally induced intermetallic Rh1Zn1 nanoparticles with high phase-purity for highly selective hydrogenation of acetylene

Ordered M1Zn1 intermetallic phases with structurally isolated atom sites offer unique electronic and geometric structures for catalytic applications, but lack reliable industrial synthesis methods that avoid forming a disordered alloy with ill-defined composition. We developed a facile strategy for preparing well-defined M1Zn1 intermetallic nanoparticle (i-NP) catalysts from physical mixtures of monometallic M/SiO2 (M = Rh, Pd, Pt) and ZnO. The Rh1Zn1 i-NPs with structurally isolated Rh atom sites had a high intrinsic selectivity to ethylene (91%) with extremely low C4 and oligomer formation, outperforming the reported intermetallic and alloy catalysts in acetylene semihydrogenation. Further studies revealed that the M1Zn1 phases were formed in situ in a reducing atmosphere at 400 °C by a Zn atom emitting-trapping-ordering (Zn-ETO) mechanism, which ensures the high phase-purity of i-NPs. This study provides a scalable and practical solution for further exploration of Zn-based intermetallic phases and a new strategy for designing Zn-containing catalysts.

Intermetallic Nanocrystals for Fuel-Cells-Based Electrocatalysis

Electrocatalysis underpins the renewable electrochemical conversions for sustainability, which further replies on metallic nanocrystals as vital electrocatalysts. Intermetallic nanocrystals have been known to show distinct properties compared to their disordered counterparts, and been long explored for functional improvements. Tremendous progresses have been made in the past few years, with notable trend of more precise engineering down to an atomic level and the investigation transferring into more practical membrane electrode assembly (MEA), which motivates this timely review. After addressing the basic thermodynamic and kinetic fundamentals, we discuss classic and latest synthetic strategies that enable not only the formation of intermetallic phase but also the rational control of other catalysis-determinant structural parameters, such as size and morphology. We also demonstrate the emerging intermetallic nanomaterials for potentially further advancement in energy electrocatalysis. Then, we discuss the state-of-the-art characterizations and representative intermetallic electrocatalysts with emphasis on oxygen reduction reaction evaluated in a MEA setup. We summarize this review by laying out existing challenges and offering perspective on future research directions toward practicing intermetallic electrocatalysts for energy conversions.

A General Concurrent Template Strategy for Ordered Mesoporous Intermetallic Nanoparticles with Controllable Catalytic Performance

We report a general concurrent template strategy for precise synthesis of mesoporous Pt-/Pd-based intermetallic nanoparticles with desired morphology and ordered mesostructure. The concurrent template not only supplies a mesoporous metal seed for re-crystallization growth of atomically ordered intermetallic phases with unique atomic stoichiometry but also provides a nanoconfinement environment for nanocasting synthesis of mesoporous nanoparticles with ordered mesostructure and rhombic dodecahedral morphology under elevated temperature. Using the selective hydrogenation of 3-nitrophenylacetylene as a proof-of-concept catalytic reaction, mesoporous intermetallic PtSn nanoparticles exhibited remarkably controllable intermetallic phase-dependent catalytic selectivity and excellent catalytic stability. This work provides a very powerful strategy for precise preparation of ordered mesoporous intermetallic nanocrystals for application in selective catalysis and fuel cell electrocatalysis.

Intermetallic Nanocatalyst for Highly Active Heterogeneous Hydroformylation

Hydroformylation is an imperative chemical process traditionally catalyzed by homogeneous catalysts. Designing a heterogeneous catalyst with high activity and selectivity in hydroformylation is challenging but essential to allow the convenient separation and recycling of precious catalysts. Here, we report the development of an outstanding catalyst for efficient heterogeneous hydroformylation, RhZn intermetallic nanoparticles. In the hydroformylation of styrene, it shows three times higher turnover frequency (3090 h^-1) compared to the benchmark homogeneous Wilkinson's catalyst (966 h^-1), as well as a high chemoselectivity toward aldehyde products. RhZn is active for a variety of olefin substrates and can be recycled without a significant loss of activity. Density functional theory calculations show that the RhZn surfaces reduce the binding strength of reaction intermediates and have lower hydroformylation activation energy barriers compared to pure Rh(111), leading to more favorable reaction energetics on RhZn. The calculations also predict potential catalyst design strategies to achieve high regioselectivity.

Elucidating the surface compositions of Pd@PtnL core-shell nanocrystals through catalytic reactions and spectroscopy probes

The catalytic behaviors or properties of bimetallic catalysts are highly dependent on the surface composition, but it has been a grand challenge to acquire such information. In this work, we employ Pd@Pt_nL core-shell nanocrystals with an octahedral shape and tunable Pt shell thickness as a model system to elucidate their surface compositions using catalytic reactions based upon the selective hydrogenation of butadiene and acetylene. Our results indicate that the surface of the core-shell nanocrystals changed from Pt-rich to Pd-rich when they were subjected to calcination under oxygen, a critical step involved in the preparation of many industrial catalysts. The inside-out migration can be attributed to both atomic interdiffusion and the oxidation of Pd atoms during the calcination process. The changes in surface composition were further confirmed using infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. This work offers insightful guidance for the development and optimization of bimetallic catalysts toward various reactions.

Alkyne Hydrogenation Catalysis across a Family of Ga/In Layered Zintl Phases

Transition-metal-free Zintl-Klemm phases have received little attention as heterogeneous catalysis. Here, we show that a large family of structurally and electronically similar layered Zintl-Klemm phases built from honeycomb layers of group 13 triel (Tr) or group 14 tetrel (Tt) networks separated by electropositive cations (A) and having a stoichiometry of ATr2 or ATrTt (A = Ca, Ba, Y, La, Eu; Tr = Ga, In; Tt = Si, Ge) exhibit varying degrees of activity for the hydrogenation of phenylacetylene to styrene and ethylbenzene at 51 bar H2 and 40-100 °C across a variety of solvents. The most active catalysts contain Ga with, formally, a half-filled pz orbital, and minimal bonding between neighboring Tr2 or TrTt layers. A 13-layer trigonal polytype of CaGaGe (13T-CaGaGe) was the most active, cyclable, and robust catalyst and under modest conditions (1 atm H2, 40 °C) had a surface specific activity (590 h-1) comparable to a commercial Lindlar's catalyst. Additionally, 13T-CaGaGe maintained 100% conversion of phenylacetylene to styrene at 51 bar H2, even after 5 months of air exposure. This work reveals the structural design elements that lead to particularly high catalytic activity in Zintl-Klemm phases, further establishing them as a promising materials platform for hydrogen-based heterogeneous catalysis.

In situ observation of the crystal structure transition of Pt-Sn intermetallic nanoparticles during deactivation and regeneration

The mechanism of the deactivation and regeneration of PtSn intermetallic compound nanoparticle (iNP) catalysts was studied by in situ TEM investigation. Our study reveals the reversible dynamic structural transition of the iNPs during deactivation and regeneration, which provides a direct correlation between the atomic structure and the catalytic activity of the iNPs.

The impact of synthetic method on the catalytic application of intermetallic nanoparticles

Intermetallic alloy nanocrystals have emerged as a promising next generation of nanocatalyst, largely due to their promise of surface tunability. Atomic control of the geometric and electronic structure of the nanoparticle surface offers a precise command of the catalytic surface, with the potential for creating homogeneous active sites that extend over the entire nanoparticle. Realizing this promise, however, has been limited by synthetic difficulties, imparted by differences in parent metal crystal structure, reduction potential, and atomic size. Further, little attention has been paid to the impact of synthetic method on catalytic application. In this review, we seek to connect the two, organizing the current synthesis methods and catalytic scope of intermetallic nanoparticles and suggesting areas where more work is needed. Such analysis should help to guide future intermetallic nanoparticle development, with the ultimate goal of generating precisely controlled nanocatalysts tailored to catalysis.

Tutorial: structural characterization of isolated metal atoms and subnanometric metal clusters in zeolites

The encapsulation of subnanometric metal entities (isolated metal atoms and metal clusters with a few atoms) in porous materials such as zeolites can be an effective strategy for the stabilization of those metal species and therefore can be further used for a variety of catalytic reactions. However, owing to the complexity of zeolite structures and their low stability under the electron beam, it is challenging to obtain atomic-level structural information of the subnanometric metal species encapsulated in zeolite crystallites. In this protocol, we show the application of a scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) technique that records simultaneously the high-angle annular dark-field (HAADF) images and integrated differential phase-contrast (iDPC) images for structural characterization of subnanometric Pt and Sn species within MFI zeolite. The approach relies on the use of a computational model to simulate results obtained under different conditions where the metals are present in different positions within the zeolite. This imaging technique allows to obtain simultaneously the spatial information of heavy elements (Pt and Sn in this work) and the zeolite framework structure, enabling direct determination of the location of the subnanometric metal species. Moreover, we also present the combination of other spectroscopy techniques as complementary tools for the STEM-iDPC imaging technique to obtain global understanding and insights on the spatial distributions of subnanometric metal species in zeolite structure. These structural insights can provide guidelines for the rational design of uniform metal-zeolite materials for catalytic applications.

Pairwise semi-hydrogenation of alkyne to cis-alkene on platinum-tin intermetallic compounds

The molecular basis for the high cis-alkene selectivity over intermetallic PtSn for alkyne semi-hydrogenation is demonstrated. Unlike the universal assumption that the bimetallic surface is saturated with atomic hydrogen, molecular hydrogen has a higher barrier for dissociative adsorption on intermetallic PtSn due to the deficiency of Pt three-fold sites. The resulting molecular behavior of adsorbed hydrogen on intermetallic PtSn nanoparticles leads to pairwise-hydrogenation of three alkynes to the corresponding cis-alkenes, satisfying both high stereoselectivity and high chemoselectivity.
