Kinetic analysis of the asymmetric hydrogenation of ß-keto esters over α-amino acid-functionalized Pt nanoparticles

Nanoarchitectured Cu based catalysts supported on alginate/glycyl leucine hybrid beads for tainted water treatment

Water pollution reached worrying point due to different dye pollutants which demands an instant solution. One of the best ways to manage water pollutants is their reduction and decolorization to less-toxic and useful compounds. However, reduction process requires an effective, stable, and recyclable catalyst to reduce such pollutants more effectively. Metal nanoparticles (M⁰) are highly effective catalysts but separation of nanoparticles after reaction is difficult and requires a high-speed centrifugation. If loaded on polymer-beads, they can be easily separated from the reaction-mixture. Hearin, alginate/glycyl leucine (AGL) hybrid-beads were prepared, and copper nanoparticles (Cu⁰) were grown on it by simple process. M⁰/AGL bead catalysts were tested toward reducing various toxic compounds. Among all developed composite-beads, the catalytic performance of Cu⁰/AGL was highest in terms of reduction kinetics. After initial screening for different pollutants, Cu⁰/AGL was much more effective for MO reduction, thus, all optimized different parameters i.e., catalyst dosage, stability, amount of reducing-agent and recyclability were experimentally determined. The Cu⁰/AGL showed high-rate constants (k_app) of 0.7566 and 2.9506 min^-1 depending on beads content. The reusability of the Cu⁰/AGL catalysts up to the 7^th cycle has been checked. With the use of AGL as support for the Cu nanoparticles, not only the catalytic activity was retained for longer times during reusability, but it helped in their easy separation.

Designing Sites in Heterogeneous Catalysis: Are We Reaching Selectivities Competitive With Those of Homogeneous Catalysts?

A critical review of different prominent nanotechnologies adapted to catalysis is provided, with focus on how they contribute to the improvement of selectivity in heterogeneous catalysis. Ways to modify catalytic sites range from the use of the reversible or irreversible adsorption of molecular modifiers to the immobilization or tethering of homogeneous catalysts and the development of well-defined catalytic sites on solid surfaces. The latter covers methods for the dispersion of single-atom sites within solid supports as well as the use of complex nanostructures, and it includes the post-modification of materials via processes such as silylation and atomic layer deposition. All these methodologies exhibit both advantages and limitations, but all offer new avenues for the design of catalysts for specific applications. Because of the high cost of most nanotechnologies and the fact that the resulting materials may exhibit limited thermal or chemical stability, they may be best aimed at improving the selective synthesis of high value-added chemicals, to be incorporated in organic synthesis schemes, but other applications are being explored as well to address problems in energy production, for instance, and to design greener chemical processes. The details of each of these approaches are discussed, and representative examples are provided. We conclude with some general remarks on the future of this field.

Anion Dependent Particle Size Control of Platinum Nanoparticles Synthesized in Ethylene Glycol

The polyol synthesis is a well-established method to form so-called “surfactant-free” nanoparticles (NPs). In the present study, the NP size resulting from the thermal reduction of the precursors H₂PtCl₆, H₂Pt(OH)₆, or Pt(acac)₂ in presence of the bases NaOH or Na(acac) at different concentrations is studied. It is shown that the size control depends more strongly on the nature of the precursor (metal salt) than on the anion present in the base. The latter is surprising as the concentration of the base anion is often an important factor to achieve a size control. The reduction of H₂PtCl₆ or H₂Pt(OH)₆ in presence of NaOH and Na(acac) confirm the observation that the NP size is determined by the OH⁻/Pt molar ratio and expands it to the base anion/Pt molar ratio. In contrast, the reduction of Pt(acac)₂ in presence of the bases NaOH (previous reports) or Na(acac) (shown in the present work) leads to larger NPs of ca. 3 nm, independent of the concentration of the base anions. Hence, the anion effect observed here seems to originate predominantly from the nature of the precursor (precursor anion dependence) and only for certain precursors as H₂PtCl₆ or H₂Pt(OH)₆ the size control depends on the base anion/Pt molar ratio.

Chirality and Surface Bonding Correlation in Atomically Precise Metal Nanoclusters

Chirality is ubiquitous in nature and occurs at all length scales. The development of applications for chiral nanostructures is rising rapidly. With the recent achievements of atomically precise nanochemistry, total structures of ligand-protected Au and other metal nanoclusters (NCs) are successfully obtained, and the origins of chirality are discovered to be associated with different parts of the cluster, including the surface ligands (e.g., swirl patterns), the organic-inorganic interface (e.g., helical stripes), and the kernel. Herein, a unified picture of metal-ligand surface bonding-induced chirality for the nanoclusters is proposed. The different bonding modes of M-X (where M = metal and X = the binding atom of ligand) lead to different surface structures on nanoclusters, which in turn give rise to various characteristic features of chirality. A comparison of Au-thiolate NCs with Au-phosphine ones further reveals the important roles of surface bonding. Compared to the Au-thiolate NCs, the Ag/Cu/Cd-thiolate systems exhibit different coordination modes between the metal and the thiolate. Other than thiolate and phosphine ligands, alkynyls are also briefly discussed. Several methods of obtaining chiroptically active nanoclusters are introduced, such as enantioseparation by high-performance liquid chromatography and enantioselective synthesis. Future perspectives on chiral NCs are also proposed.
