Liquid Metal Interfacial Engineering Strategy to Synthesize All-Carbon-Linked Porous Aromatic Frameworks for the Cycloaddition of CO2 with Epoxides

This study explores the room-temperature synthesis of porous materials and the immobilization of CO2 without the use of metals. The porous aromatic frameworks synthesized at room temperature retain the important functional group structure, and the abundance of carbon-chlorine bonds creates an excellent environment for imidazole linkage. Consequently, a catalyst conducive to the cycloaddition of carbon dioxide is obtained. Hexachloro-p-xylene is explored as the precursor, and a catalyst conducive to carbon dioxide cycloaddition is obtained. The functionalized porous aromatic frameworks (PAF-280-I/B) possess a conversion of 99.6% with a selectivity of 98.9% toward styrene carbonate (SC). The findings of this study can help mitigate the impact of greenhouse gases and enable the production of organic compounds in the circular carbonate platform, turning waste into valuable resources.

Applications of Hantzsch Esters in Organocatalytic Enantioselective Synthesis

Hantzsch esters (1,4-dihydropyridine dicarboxylates) have become, in this century, very versatile reagents for enantioselective organic transformations. They can act as hydride transfer agents to reduce, regioselectively, a variety of multiple bonds, e.g., C=C and C=N, under mild reaction conditions. They are excellent reagents for the dearomatization of heteroaromatic substances, and participate readily in cascade processes. In the last few years, they have also become useful reagents for photoredox reactions. They can participate as sacrificial electron and hydrogen donors and when 4-alkyl or 4-acyl-substituted, they can act as alkyl or acyl radical transfer agents. These last reactions may take place in the presence or absence of a photocatalyst. This review surveys the literature published in this area in the last five years.

Combining Polymerization and Templating toward Hyper-Cross-Linked Poly(propargyl aldehyde)s and Poly(propargyl alcohol)s for Reversible H2O and CO2 Capture and Construction of Porous Chiral Networks

Two series of hyper-cross-linked microporous polyacetylene networks containing either -[CH=C(CH=O)]- or -[CH=C(CH₂OH)]- monomeric units are reported. Networks are prepared by chain-growth copolymerization of acetal-protected propargyl aldehyde and acetal-protected propargyl alcohol with a 1,3,5-triethynylbenzene cross-linker followed by hydrolytic deprotection/detemplating. Deprotection not only liberates reactive CH=O and CH₂OH groups in the networks but also modifies the texture of the networks towards higher microporosity and higher specific surface area. The final networks with CH=O and CH₂OH groups attached directly to the polyene main chains of the networks have a specific surface area from 400 to 800 m²/g and contain functional groups in a high amount, up to 9.6 mmol/g. The CH=O and CH₂OH groups in the networks serve as active centres for the reversible capture of CO₂ and water vapour. The water vapour capture capacities of the networks (up to 445 mg/g at 297 K) are among the highest values reported for porous polymers, making these materials promising for cyclic water harvesting from the air. Covalent modification of the networks with (R)-(+)-3-aminopyrrolidine and (S)-(+)-2-methylbutyric acid enables the preparation of porous chiral networks and shows networks with CH=O and CH₂OH groups as reactive supports suitable for the anchoring of various functional molecules.

BINOL-Containing Chiral Porous Polymers as Platforms for Enantiorecognition

The enantioselective discrimination of racemic compounds can be achieved through the design and preparation of a new family of chiral conjugated BINOL-porous polymers (CBPPs) from enantiopure (R)- or (S)-BINOL derivatives and 1,3,5-tris(4-phenylboronic acid)benzene or 1,3,5-tris(4-ethynylphenyl)benzene, 1,3,5-triethynyl-2,4,6-trifluorobenzene, and tetra(4-ethynylphenyl)methane as comonomers following Suzuki-Miyaura and Sonogashira-Hagihara carbon-carbon coupling approaches. The obtained CBPPs show high thermal stability, a good specific surface area, and a robust framework and can be applied successfully in the fluorescence recognition of enantiomers of terpenes (limonene and α-pinene) and 1-phenylethylamine. Fluorescence titration of CBPPs-OH in acetonitrile shows that all Sonogashira hosts exhibit a preference for the (R)-enantiomer over the (S)-enantiomer of 1-phenylethylamine, the selectivity being much higher than that of the corresponding BINOL-based soluble system used as a reference. However, the Suzuki host reveals a preference toward (S)-phenylethylamine. Regarding the sensing of terpenes, only Sonogashira hosts show enantiodifferentiation with an almost total preference for the (S)-enantiomer of limonene and α-pinene. Based on the computational simulations and the experimental data, with 1-phenylethylamine as the analyte, chiral recognition is due to the distinctive binding affinities resulting from N···H-O hydrogen bonds and the π-π interaction between the host and the guest. However, for limonene, the geometry of the adsorption complex is mostly governed by the interaction between the hydroxyl group of the BINOL unit and the C═C bond of the iso-propenyl fragment. The synthetic strategy used to prepare CBPPs opens many possibilities to place chiral centers such as BINOL in porous polymers for different chiral applications such as enantiomer recognition.

High Refractive Index, Enantiopure Silicones Based on BINOL

The high refractive index aromatic compound, binaphthol (BINOL), is readily incorporated into silicone polymer chains using the Piers-Rubinsztajn reaction; alternating and random linear copolymers, and elastomers are available. The highest refractive index (RI) materials were BINOL rich. It was not possible to directly make high refractive index linear polymers with very short HSi-capped, telechelic silicone chains, as they did not react cleanly. However, chain extending short vinyl-capped BINOL macromers with simple arylsilanes using hydrosilylation led to polymers with molar mass up to 8000 and refractive indices up to 1.58. Elastomers were prepared using similar processes. The reactions are facile to practice and suggest BINOL could be harnessed in these and other processes to augment RI. Chiral Phosphoric Acids as Versatile Tools for Organocatalytic Asymmetric Transfer Hydrogenations

Herein, recent developments in the field of organocatalytic asymmetric transfer hydrogenation (ATH) of C=N, C=O and C=C double bonds using chiral phosphoric acid catalysis are reviewed. This still rapidly growing area of asymmetric catalysis relies on metal-free catalysts in combination with biomimetic hydrogen sources. Chiral phosphoric acids have proven to be extremely versatile tools in this area, providing highly active and enantioselective alternatives for the asymmetric reduction of α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds, imines and various heterocycles. Eventually, such transformations are more and more often used in multicomponent/cascade reactions, which undoubtedly shows their great synthetic potential and the bright future of organocatalytic asymmetric transfer hydrogenations.

A sensitive and selective BINOL based ratiometric fluorescence sensor for the detection of cyanide ions

A highly selective, novel BINOL based sensor BBCN has been developed for the fluorescent ratiometric detection of cyanide ions (CN⁻). The optical study revealed that BBCN exhibited unique spectral changes only with cyanide ions in the presence of other competing ions. Besides, an apparent fluorescent colour change from green to blue was observed. A clear linear relationship was observed between the fluorescence ratiometric ratio of BBCN and the concentration of CN⁻ with a reasonably low detection limit (LOD) of 189 nM (507 ppb). The optical response was due to the nucleophilic addition of CN⁻ to the dicyanovinyl group of the sensor, which compromises the probe's intramolecular charge transfer. This mechanism was well confirmed by Job's plot, ¹H-NMR and ESI-MS studies. BBCN showed immediate spectral response towards (1 second) CN⁻ and detection could be realized in a broad pH window. Furthermore, the practical utility of BBCN was studied by test paper-based analysis and the detection of CN⁻ in various water resources.

Confinement-Driven Enantioselectivity in 3D Porous Chiral Covalent Organic Frameworks

3D covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with well-defined porous channels are shown to be capable of inducing chiral molecular catalysts from non-enantioselective to highly enantioselective in catalyzing organic transformations. By condensations of a tetrahedral tetraamine and two linear dialdehydes derived from enantiopure 1,1'-binaphthol (BINOL), two chiral 3D COFs with a 9-fold or 11-fold interpenetrated diamondoid framework are prepared. Enhanced Brønsted acidity was observed for the chiral BINOL units that are uniformly distributed within the tubular channels compared to the non-immobilized acids. This facilitates the Brønsted acid catalysis of cyclocondensation of aldehydes and anthranilamides to produce 2,3-dihydroquinazolinones. DFT calculations show the COF catalyst provides preferential secondary interactions between the substrate and framework to induce enantioselectivities that are not achievable in homogeneous systems.

Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of Covalent Organic Frameworks: A Review

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are relatively recent materials. They have received great attention due to their interesting properties. However, the application of microwaves in their synthesis, despite its advantages such as faster and more reproducible processes, is a minority. Herein, a comprehensive compilation of the research results published in the microwave-assisted synthesis (MAS) of COFs is presented. This review includes articles of 2D and 3D COFs prepared using microwaves as source of energy. The articles have been classified depending on the functional groups including boronate ester, imines, enamines, azines, and triazines, among others. It compiles the main parameters of synthesis and characteristics of the materials together with some general issues related with COFs and microwaves. Additionally, current and future perspectives of the topic have been discussed.
