Abstract
Dual-atom catalysts (DACs) with atomically dispersed dual-sites, as an extension of single-atom catalysts (SACs), have recently become a new hot topic in heterogeneous catalysis due to their maximized atom efficiency and dual-site diverse synergy, because the synergistic diversity of dual-sites achieved by asymmetric microenvironment tailoring can efficiently boost the catalytic activity by optimizing the electronic structure of DACs. Here, this work first summarizes the frequently-used experimental synthesis and characterization methods of DACs. Then, four synergistic catalytic mechanisms (cascade mechanism, assistance mechanism, co-adsorption mechanism and bifunction mechanism) and four key modulating methods (active site asymmetric strategy, transverse/axial-modification engineering, distance engineering and strain engineering) are elaborated comprehensively. The emphasis is placed on the effects of asymmetric microenvironment of DACs on oxygen/carbon dioxide reduction reaction. Finally, some perspectives and outlooks are also addressed. In short, the review summarizes a useful asymmetric microenvironment tailoring strategy to speed up synthesis of high-performance electrocatalysts for different reactions.

Abstract
In this study, Co/Ni-NC catalyst with hetero-diatomic Co/Ni active sites dispersed on nitrogen-doped carbon matrix is synthesized via the controlled pyrolysis of ZIF-8 containing Co2+ and Ni2+ compounds. Experimental characterizations and theoretical calculations reveal that Co and Ni are atomically and uniformly dispersed in pairs of CoN4-NiN4 with an intersite distance ≈0.41 nm, and there is long-range d-d coupling between Co and Ni with more electron delocalization for higher bifunctional activity. Besides, the in situ grown carbon nanotubes at the edges of the catalyst particles allow high electronic conductivity for electrocatalysis process. Electrochemical evaluations demonstrate the superior ORR and OER bifunctionality of Co/Ni-NC catalyst with a narrow potential gap of only 0.691 V and long-term durability, significantly prevailing over the single-atom Co-NC and Ni-NC catalysts and the benchmark Pt/C and RuO2 catalysts. Co/Ni-NC catalyzed Zn-air batteries achieve a high specific capacity of 771 mAh g-1 and a long continuous operation period up to 340 h with a small voltage gap of ≈0.65 V, also much superior to Pt/C-RuO2.

Abstract
A Fe-Co dual-metal co-doped N containing the carbon composite (FeCo-HNC) was prepared by adjusting the ratio of iron to cobalt as well as the pyrolysis temperature with the assistance of functionalized silica template. Fe1Co-HNC, which was formed with 1D carbon nanotubes and 2D carbon nanosheets including a rich mesoporous structure, exhibited outstanding oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic activities. The ORR half-wave potential is 0.86 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE), and the OER overpotential is 0.76 V at 10 mA cm-2 with the Fe1Co-HNC catalyst. It also displayed superior performance in zinc-air batteries. This method provides a promising strategy for the fabrication of efficient transition metal-based carbon catalysts.

Abstract
Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a key role in electrochemical conversion, which needs efficient and economical electrocatalyst to boost its kinetics for large-scale application. Herein, a bimetallic CoP/FeP2heterostructure with a three-dimensional ordered macroporous structure (3DOM-CoP/FeP2) was synthesized as an OER catalyst to demonstrate a heterogeneous engineering induction strategy. By adjusting the electron distribution and producing a lot of active sites, the heterogeneous interface enhances catalytic performance. High specific surface area is provided by the 3DOM structure. Additionally, at the solid-gas-electrolyte threephase interface, the electrocatalytic reaction exhibits good mass transfer. In situRaman spectroscopy characterization revealed that FeOOH and CoOOH reconstructed from CoP/FeP2were the true OER active sites. Consequently, the 3DOM-CoP/FeP2demonstrates superior OER activity with a low overpotentials of 300/420 mV at 10/100 mA cm-2and meritorious OER durability. It also reveals promising performance as the overall water splitting anode.

Abstract
Hydrogen production from electrolytic water electrolysis is considered a viable method for hydrogen production with significant social value due to its clean and pollution-free nature, high hydrogen production efficiency, and purity, but the anode oxygen evolution reaction (OER) process is complex and kinetically slow. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) with 100% atom utilization and homogeneous active sites often exhibit high catalytic activity and are expected to be extensively applied. The catalytic performance of OER can be further improved by precise regulation of the structure through electronic effects, coordination environment, heteroatomic doping, and so on. In this review, the mechanisms of OER under different conditions are introduced, the latest research progress of SACs in the field of OER is systematically summarized, and then the effects of various structural regulation strategies on catalytic performance are discussed, and principles and ideas for the design of SACs for OER are proposed. In the end, the outstanding issues and current challenges in this field are summarized.

Abstract
Infiltration of the mesoporous structure of SBA-15 silica as a hard template with phenanthroline complexes of Fe3+ and Co2+ allowed the simultaneous dispersion of nitrogen, iron and cobalt species on the surface of the obtained carbonaceous CMK-3 silica replica, with potential as bifunctional heterogeneous catalysts for the cathodic oxygen reduction and evolution reactions (ORR and OER). The textural properties and mesopore structure depended on the composition of the material. The carbonaceous FeCoNCMK-3 (1/1), obtained with an Fe/Co molar ratio of 1/1, exhibited an ordered cylindrical mesoporous structure with a high mesopore volume, a rather homogeneous composition in terms of total and surface concentrations of iron and cobalt, and a balanced presence of pyridinic-, pyrrolic- and graphitic-N species. FeCoNCMK-3 (1/1) could improve the ORR kinetics by adsorption and reduction of O2 through the 4-electron mechanism with a current density of -17.37 mA cm-2, Eonset of 1.13 V vs. RHE and E1/2 of 0.75 V when compared to metal-free, monometallic or bimetallic electrocatalysts with a higher amount of cobalt than that of iron. In addition, FeCoNCMK-3 (1/1) exhibited activity for the OER, presenting lower values of Eonset (1.52 V), Ej10 (1.78 V) and the Tafel slope (76.3 mV dec-1) with respect to other catalysts. When evaluated as a cathode in a prototype of a Zn-air battery, FeCoNCMK-3 (1/1) exhibited a high open circuit voltage of 1.41 V, a peak power density of 66.84 mW cm-2, a large specific capacity of 818.88 mA h gZn-1, and cycling for 20 h but with deactivation upon cycling.

Abstract
Fabricating highly efficient and long-life redox bifunctional electrocatalysts is vital for oxygen-related renewable energy devices. To boost the bifunctional catalytic activity of Fe-N-C single-atom catalysts, it is imperative to fine-tune the coordination microenvironment of the Fe sites to optimize the adsorption/desorption energies of intermediates during oxygen reduction/evolution reactions (ORR/OER) and simultaneously avoid the aggregation of atomically dispersed metal sites. Herein, a strategy is developed for fabricating a free-standing electrocatalyst with atomically dispersed Fe sites (≈0.89 wt.%) supported on N, F, and S ternary-doped hollow carbon nanofibers (FeN4 -NFS-CNF). Both experimental and theoretical findings suggest that the incorporation of ternary heteroatoms modifies the charge distribution of Fe active centers and enhances defect density, thereby optimizing the bifunctional catalytic activities. The efficient regulation isolated Fe centers come from the dual confinement of zeolitic imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8) and polymerized ionic liquid (PIL), while the precise formation of distinct hierarchical three-dimensional porous structure maximizes the exposure of low-doping Fe active sites and enriched heteroatoms. FeN4 -NFS-CNF achieves remarkable electrocatalytic activity with a high ORR half-wave potential (0.90 V) and a low OER overpotential (270 mV) in alkaline electrolyte, revealing the benefit of optimizing the microenvironment of low-doping iron single atoms in directing bifunctional catalytic activity.

Abstract
Rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs) with high energy density and low pollutant emissions are regarded as the promising energy storage and conversion devices. However, the sluggish kinetics and complex four-electron processes of oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reaction occurring at air electrodes in rechargeable ZABs pose significant challenges for their large-scale application. Carbon-supported single-atom catalysts (SACs) exhibit great potential in oxygen electrocatalysis, but needs to further improve their bifunctional electrocatalytic performance, which is highly related to the coordination environment of the active sites. As an extension of SACs, dual-sites SACs with wide combination of two active sites provide limitless opportunities to tailor coordination environment at the atomic level and improve catalytic performance. The review systematically summarizes recent achievements in the fabrication of dual-site SACs as bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts, starting by illustrating the design fundament of the electrocatalysts according to their catalytic mechanisms. Subsequently, metal-nonmetal-atom synergies and dual-metal-atom synergies to synthesize dual-sites SACs toward enhancing rechargeable ZABs performance are overviewed. Finally, the perspectives and challenges for the development of dual-sites SACs are proposed, shedding light on the rational design of efficient bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts for practical rechargeable ZABs.

Abstract
Ever-growing demands for rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs) call for efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts. Among various electrocatalysts, single atom catalysts (SACs) have received increasing attention due to the merits of high atom utilization, structural tunability, and remarkable activity. Rational design of bifunctional SACs relies heavily on an in-depth understanding of reaction mechanisms, especially dynamic evolution under electrochemical conditions. This requires a systematic study in dynamic mechanisms to replace current trial and error modes. Herein, fundamental understanding of dynamic oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reaction mechanisms for SACs is first presented combining in situ and/or operando characterizations and theoretical calculations. By highlighting structure-performance relationships, rational regulation strategies are particularly proposed to facilitate the design of efficient bifunctional SACs. Furthermore, future perspectives and challenges are discussed. This review provides a thorough understanding of dynamic mechanisms and regulation strategies for bifunctional SACs, which are expected to pave the avenue for exploring optimum single atom bifunctional oxygen catalysts and effective ZABs.

Abstract
Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) plays a crucial role in electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices such as metal-air batteries and water electrolyzers. Herein, a hierarchical nanoporous platinum-based metallic glass (NPMG) was developed by a facile fabrication method by dissolving in a liquid. The surface topography of the sample can be easily modulated by controlling the particle size of sodium chloride. As a result, the NPMG was proved to be efficient and robust as the ORR catalysts with super hydrophilicity and self-renewal capacity. The half-wave potential of the platinum-based porous material was 835 mV at 0.1 M KOH, even higher than that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst (823 mV) and the previously reported platinum material. In particular, platinum-based porous materials have extremely long stability (more than 500 h) through the self-renewal surface, which perfectly meets the requirements of catalyst stability in batteries. Our study has a better inspiration for developing and applying novel catalysts to prepare metal-air batteries.

Abstract
Exploring efficient noble-metal-free electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial for the development of rechargeable Zn-air batteries. Herein, a self-limiting method using an agarose gel was proposed to prepare bimetallic (iron and cobalt) nitrogen-doped carbon composites (FeCo-NC). The resulting FeCo-NC catalyst has a high surface area and a hierarchical porous structure. The optimized FeCo-NC electrocatalyst exhibits a small potential difference (ΔE) = 0.72 V between the ORR half-wave potential and the OER potential at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in alkaline media. Impressively, the FeCo-NC Zn-air battery exhibits a high open-circuit voltage, large power density, and outstanding charge-discharge cycling stability. This study provides an effective means of designing electrocatalysts and energy conversion systems.

Abstract
As one of the most competitive candidates for large-scale energy storage, zinc-air batteries (ZABs) have attracted great attention due to their high theoretical specific energy density, low toxicity, high abundance, and high safety. It is highly desirable but still remains a huge challenge, however, to achieve cheap and efficient electrocatalysts to promote their commercialization. Recently, Fe-based single-atom and dual-atom catalysts (SACs and DACs, respectively) have emerged as powerful candidates for ZABs derived from their maximum utilization of atoms, excellent catalytic performance, and low price. In this review, some fundamental concepts in the field of ZABs are presented and the recent progress on the reported Fe-based SACs and DACs is summarized, mainly focusing on the relationship between structure and performance at the atomic level, with the aim of providing helpful guidelines for future rational designs of efficient electrocatalysts with atomically dispersed active sites. Finally, the great advantages and future challenges in this field of ZABs are also discussed.

Abstract
It is necessary to develop new energy technologies because of serious environmental problems. As one of the most promising electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices, the Zn-air battery has attracted extensive research in recent years due to the advantages of abundant resources, low price, high energy density, and high reduction potential. However, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) of Zn-air battery during discharge and charge have complicated multi-electron transfer processes with slow reaction kinetics. It is important to develop efficient and stable oxygen electrocatalysts. At present, single-function catalysts such as Pt/C, RuO2, and IrO2 are regarded as the benchmark catalysts for ORR and OER, respectively. However, the large-scale application of Zn-air battery is limited by the few sources of the precious metal catalysts, as well as their high costs, and poor long-term stability. Therefore, designing bifunctional electrocatalysts with excellent activity and stability using resource-rich non-noble metals is the key to improving ORR/OER reaction kinetics and promoting the commercial application of the Zn-air battery. Metal-organic framework (MOF) is a kind of porous crystal material composed of metal ions/clusters connected by organic ligands, which has the characteristics of adjustable porosity, highly ordered pore structure, low crystal density, and large specific surface area. MOFs and their derivatives show remarkable performance in promoting oxygen reaction, and are a promising candidate material for oxygen electrocatalysts. Herein, this review summarizes the latest progress in advanced MOF-derived materials such as oxygen electrocatalysts in a Zn-air battery. Firstly, the composition and working principle of the Zn-air battery are introduced. Then, the related reaction mechanism of ORR/OER is briefly described. After that, the latest developments in ORR/OER electrocatalysts for Zn-air batteries are introduced in detail from two aspects: (i) non-precious metal catalysts (NPMC) derived from MOF materials, including single transition metals and bimetallic catalysts with Co, Fe, Mn, Cu, etc.; (ii) metal-free catalysts derived from MOF materials, including heteroatom-doped MOF materials and MOF/graphene oxide (GO) composite materials. At the end of the paper, we also put forward the challenges and prospects of designing bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts with high activity and stability derived from MOF materials for Zn-air battery.

Abstract
Dual-atom catalysts (DACs) are an important branch of single-atom catalysts (SACs), in which the former can effectively break the dilemma faced by the traditional SACs. The synergetic effects between bimetallic atoms provide many active sites, promising to improve catalytic performance and even catalyze more complex reactions. This paper reviews the recent research progresses of two kinds of DACs, including homonuclear and heteronuclear DACs, and their applications in oxygen reduction, carbon dioxide reduction, hydrogen evolution, oxygen evolution, Zn-air batteries, tandem catalytic reactions, and so on. In addition, in order to promote the further development of DACs, the challenges and perspectives of DACs are put forward.

Abstract
Heteronuclear double-atom catalysts, unlike single atom catalysts, may change the charge density of active metal sites by introducing another metal single atom, thereby modifying the adsorption energies of reaction intermediates and increasing the catalytic activities. First, density functional theory calculations are used to figure out the best combination by modeling two transition-metal atoms from Fe, Co, and Ni onto N-doped graphene. Generally, Fe and Co sites are highly active for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), respectively. The combination of Co and Fe to form CoFe-N-C not only further improves the Fe's ORR and Co's OER activities but also greatly enhances the Co site's ORR and Fe site's OER activities. Then, we synthesize the CoFe-N-C by a two-step pyrolysis process and find that the CoFe-N-C exhibits exceptional ORR and OER electrocatalytic activities in alkaline media, significantly superior to Fe-N-C and Co-N-C and even commercial catalysts.

Abstract
With the goal of improving the activity of single-atom catalysts, in-depth investigations were performed to design adjacent single-metal sites to produce a modulation effect by using symmetry breaking as an indicator of tuning the electronic structure. A CoN4-ZnN4/C catalyst composed of adjacent Co and Zn sites anchored on nitrogen-doped graphene was predicted by first-principle calculations to exhibit promising bifunctional electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction and evolution reactions with an overpotential of 0.225 and 0.264 V, respectively, which is superior to CoN4/C catalysts and outperforms commercial Pt/C and IrO2 benchmarks. The impressive catalytic activity originates from the remarkable asymmetric deformation and strong pseudo-Jahn-Teller vibronic coupling effect, through which the Zn site acts as a modulator to induce the symmetry-breaking phenomenon and tune the d-band structure and binding strength between key intermediates and the Co site. It provides mechanism-based insight for applying diatomic site catalysts for catalytic reactions and further understanding of the modulation effect.

Abstract
Next-generation batteries based on conversion reactions, including aqueous metal-air batteries, nonaqueous alkali metal-O2 and -CO2 batteries, alkali metal-chalcogen batteries, and alkali metal-ion batteries have attracted great interest. However, their use is restricted by inefficient reversible conversion of active agents. Developing bifunctional catalysts to accelerate the conversion reaction kinetics in both discharge and charge processes is urgently needed. Graphene-, or graphene-like carbon-supported atomically dispersed metal catalysts (G-ADMCs) have been demonstrated to show excellent activity in various electrocatalytic reactions, making them promising candidates. Different from G-ADMCs for catalysis, which only require high activity in one direction, G-ADMCs for rechargeable batteries should provide high activity in both discharging and charging. This review provides guidance for the design and fabrication of bifunctional G-ADMCs for next-generation rechargeable batteries based on conversion reactions. The key challenges that prevent their reversible conversion, the origin of the activity of bifunctional G-ADMCs, and the current design principles of bifunctional G-ADMCs for highly reversible conversion, have been analyzed and highlighted for each conversion-type battery. Finally, a summary and outlook on the development of bifunctional G-ADMC materials for next-generation batteries with a high energy density and excellent energy efficiency are given.

Abstract
Multifunctional electrocatalysts are vastly sought for their applications in water splitting electrolyzers, metal-air batteries, and regenerative fuel cells because of their ability to catalyze multiple reactions such as hydrogen evolution, oxygen evolution, and oxygen reduction reactions. More specifically, the application of single-atom electrocatalyst in multifunctional catalysis is a promising approach to ensure good atomic efficiency, tunability and additionally benefits simple theoretical treatment. In this review, we provide insights into the variety of single-site metal catalysts and their identification. We also summarize the recent advancements in computational modeling of multifunctional electrocatalysis on single-site catalysts. Furthermore, we explain each modeling step with open-source-based working examples of a standard computational approach.
