Reaction paths of methane activation and oxidation of surface intermediates over NiO on Ceria-Zirconia catalysts studied by In-situ FTIR spectroscopy

Thermophysical Investigation of Multiform NiO Nanowalls@carbon Foam/1-Octadecanol Composite Phase Change Materials for Thermal Management

Multiform NiO nanowalls with a high specific surface area were constructed in situ on carbon foam (CF) to construct NiO@CF/OD composite phase change materials (CPCMs). The synthesis mechanism, microstructures, thermal management capability, and photothermal conversion of NiO@CF/OD CPCMs were systematically studied. Additionally, the collaborative enhancement effects of CF and multiform NiO nanowalls on the thermal properties of OD PCMs were also investigated. NiO@CF not only maintains the porous 3D network structure of CF, but also effectively prevents the aggregation of NiO nanosheets. The chemical structures of NiO@CF/OD CPCMs were analyzed using XRD and FTIR spectroscopy. When combined with CF and NiO nanosheets, OD has high compatibility with NiO@CF. The thermal conductivity of NiO@CF/OD-L CPCMs was 1.12 W/m·K, which is 366.7% higher than that of OD. The improvement in thermal conductivity of CPCMs was theoretically analyzed according to the Debye model. NiO@CF/OD-L CPCMs have a photothermal conversion efficiency up to 77.6%. This article provided a theoretical basis for the optimal design and performance prediction of thermal storage materials and systems.

Recent Progress on Sulfated Nanozirconia as a Solid Acid Catalyst in the Hydrocracking Reaction

Zirconia has advantageous thermal stability and acid–base properties. The acidity character of ZrO2 can be enhanced through the sulfation process forming sulfated zirconia (ZrO2-SO4). An acidity test of the catalyst produced proved that the sulfate loading succeeded in increasing the acidity of ZrO2 as confirmed by the presence of characteristic absorptions of the sulfate group from the FTIR spectra of the catalyst. The ZrO2-SO4 catalyst can be further modified with transition metals, such as Platinum (Pt), Chromium (Cr), and Nickel (Ni) to increase catalytic activity and catalyst stability. It was observed that variations in the concentrations of Pt, Cr, and Ni produced a strong influence on the catalytic activity as the acidity and porosity of the catalyst increased with their addition. The activity, selectivity, and catalytic stability tests of Pt/ZrO2-SO4, Cr/ZrO2-SO4 and Ni/ZrO2-SO4 were carried out with their application in the hydrocracking reaction to produce liquid fuel. The percentage of liquid fractions produced using these catalysts were higher than the fraction produced using pure ZrO2 and ZrO2-SO4 catalyst.

Characterization of Surface Species during Benzene Hydroxylation over a NiO-Ceria-Zirconia Catalyst

NiO/ceria-zirconia (CZ) is a promising catalyst for the selective oxidation of benzene, as the Lewis-acidic NiO clusters can activate C-H bonds and the redox-active CZ support can activate O₂ and supply active oxygen species for the reaction. In this study, we used transmission in situ infrared (IR) spectroscopy to examine surface species formed from benzene, water, oxygen, phenol, and catechol on a NiO/CZ catalyst. The formation of surface species from benzene and phenol was compared at different temperatures in the range of 50-200 °C in the presence and absence of water vapor. We also examined the role of the NiO clusters and the CZ support during benzene activation by comparing the surface species formed on NiO-CZ with those formed on a Ni-free CZ support and on a NiO/SiO₂ catalyst. The spectrum of surface species from dosing benzene at 180 °C provides evidence for C-H bond activation. Specifically, the observation of C-O stretching vibrations indicates the formation of phenolate species. Introduction of water enhances these IR signals and introduces several additional peaks, indicating that a variety of different surface species are formed. These results show that NiO/CZ could catalyze direct conversion of benzene to phenol.
