Removing Semiconductor-Cocatalyst Interfacial Electron Transfer Induced Bottleneck for Efficient Photocatalysis: A Case Study on Pt/CdS Photocatalyst

Metal-Organic Frameworks-Derived Nanocarbon Materials and Nanometal Oxides for Photocatalytic Applications

Harnessing low-density solar energy and converting it into high-density chemical energy through photocatalysis has emerged as a promising avenue for the production of chemicals and remediation of environmental pollution, which contributes to alleviating the overreliance on fossil fuels. In recent years, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained widespread application in the field of photocatalysis due to their photostability, tunable structures, and responsiveness in the visible light range. However, most MOFs exhibit relatively low response to light, limiting their practical applications. MOFs-derived nanomaterials not only retain the inherent advantages of pristine MOFs but also show enhanced light adsorption and responsiveness. This review categorizes and summarizes MOFs-derived nanomaterials, including nanocarbons and nanometal oxides, providing representative examples for the synthetic strategies of each category. Subsequently, the recent research progress on MOFs-derived materials in photocatalytic applications are systematically introduced, specifically in the areas of photocatalytic water splitting to H2, photocatalytic CO2 reduction, and photocatalytic water treatment. The corresponding mechanisms involved in each photocatalytic reaction are elaborated in detail. Finally, the review discusses the challenges and further directions faced by MOFs-derived nanomaterials in the field of photocatalysis, highlighting their potential role in advancing sustainable energy production and environmental remediation.

Tailoring the catalytic sites by regulating photogenerated electron/hole pairs separation spatially for simultaneous selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol and hydrogen evolution

Photocatalytic selective oxidation of alcohols into aldehydes and H2 is a green strategy for obtaining both value-added chemicals and clean energy. Herein, a dual-purpose ZnIn2S4@CdS photocatalyst was designed and constructed for efficient catalyzing benzyl alcohol (BA) into benzaldehyde (BAD) with coupled H2 evolution. To address the deep-rooted problems of pure CdS, such as high recombination of photogenerated carriers and severe photo-corrosion, while also preserving its superiority in H2 production, ZnIn2S4 with a suitable band structure and adequate oxidizing capability was chosen to match CdS by constructing a coupled reaction. As designed, the photoexcited holes (electrons) in the CdS (ZnIn2S4) were spatially separated and transferred to the ZnIn2S4 (CdS) by electrostatic pull from the built-in electric field, leading to expected BAD production (12.1 mmol g-1 h-1) at the ZnIn2S4 site and H2 generation (12.2 mmol g-1 h-1) at the CdS site. This composite photocatalyst also exhibited high photostability due to the reasonable hole transfer from CdS to ZnIn2S4. The experimental results suggest that the photocatalytic transform of BA into BAD on ZnIn2S4@CdS is via a carbon-centered radical mechanism. This work may extend the design of advanced photocatalysts for more chemicals by replacing H2 evolution with N2 fixation or CO2 reduction in the coupled reactions.

Time Constant Estimation and Alleviation of Interior Charge Recombination for Photocatalytic Reaction Guided by Correlation with Photoelectrochemical Behaviors

Interior charge recombination that inherently competes with the separation of photogenerated charges is crucial to the photocatalytic utilization of incident photons. We here propose to simultaneously promote both the desired hole extraction and semiconductor-cocatalyst interfacial electron transfer and suppress the undesired interior charge recombination by shifting the equilibrium potential of the semiconductor in an actual photocatalytic reaction. By correlating with these interfacial electronic processes, we estimate the time constants for the occurrence of interior charge recombination, which range from several milliseconds to several deciseconds in the actual photocatalytic reaction. This time scale estimated from photoelectrochemical behaviors not only provides a substantial guide to photocatalytic reaction design but also avoids relying on a very dense photon beam that greatly deviates from actual working conditions to generate discernible optical signals in certain common methods.

g-C3N4/Ag@AgCl with Z-scheme heterojunction and Ag electron bridge for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline wastewater

Building Z-scheme heterojunctions with an electron bridge is a favored function for increasing photocatalytic activity. A facile approach for preparing g-C3N4/Ag@AgCl ternary heterojunctions by co-precipitation and photoreduction was established in this work. First, via co-precipitation, AgCl was modified on the surface of g-C3N4 to create a broad contact area between AgCl and g-C3N4. The AgCl is then reduced to Ag via an in-situ photoreduction technique, resulting in the formation of a ternary composite. The experimental results showed that when g-C3N4 modified 25% of the Ag@AgCl, that is, g-C3N4/Ag@AgCl-25 had the best photocatalytic performance, 94.9% of TC was degraded within 240 min, and the reaction rate to TC was 0.1214 min-1, which was 4.49 times and 8.12 times higher than that of g-C3N4 and Ag/AgCl, respectively. The excellent photocatalytic performance of g-C3N4/Ag@AgCl is attributed to the LSPR effect of Ag NPs and O-doping g-C3N4, which broadens the absorbance performance of g-C3N4, the establishment of Z-type heterojunctions between AgCl NPs and g-C3N4 NSs and Ag NPs as an electron transport bridge accelerate the photogenerated electrons transfer between AgCl and g-C3N4.

Conductive Polymer-Inorganic Polythiophene/Cd0.5Zn0.5S Heterojunction with Apace Charge Separation and Strong Light Absorption for Boosting Photocatalytic Activity

In order to utilize the synergistic effect between a conductive polymer and an inorganic semiconductor to efficaciously enhance charge transfer and solve the problem of unsatisfactory performance of a single photocatalyst, thiophene (Th) was polymerized on the Cd0.5Zn0.5S nanoparticle surface to prepare a conductive polymer-inorganic polythiophene/Cd0.5Zn0.5S (PTh/CZS) heterostructrue through a simple in situ oxidation polymerization for the first time. The as-prepared PTh/CZS heterostructures significantly improved photocatalytic TCH degradation and hydrogen production activities. Especially, the 15PTh/CZS sample exhibited the optimal hydrogen production rate (18.45 mmol g-1 h-1), which was 2.51 times higher than pure Cd0.5Zn0.5S nanoparticles. In addition, 15PTh/CZS also showed very fast and efficient photodegradation ability for degrading 88% of TCH in 25 min. Moreover, the degradation rate (0.06229 min-1) was five times more than that of Cd0.5Zn0.5S. The π-π* transition characteristics, high optical absorption coefficient, wide absorption wavelength of PTh, the tight contact interface, and synergistic effect of PTh and Cd0.5Zn0.5S efficiently boosted charge transfer rate and increased the light absorption of PTh/CZS photocatalysts, which greatly enhanced the photocatalytic abilities. Besides, the mechanism of improved photocatalytic activities for TCH degradation and H2 production was also carefully proposed. Undoubtedly, this work would provide new insights into coupling conductive polymers to inorganic photocatalysts for achieving multifunctional applications in the field of photocatalysis.

Evaluating a Second Time Scale for Hole Extraction in an Actual Photocatalytic Reaction: The Method

Photoinduced hole extraction, which is widely believed to occur on the picosecond-nanosecond time scale, exhibits sensitive correlation with semiconductor-cocatalyst interfacial electron transfer that occurs on a second time scale in a photocatalytic reaction. This inherent correlation means that the required high density of electrons for overcoming the potential barrier severely suppresses the survival and interfacial extraction of photogenerated holes. We here propose to evaluate the time constant for the occurring hole extraction by separately monitoring the rise and decay of the photoinduced potential. The evaluated second time scale indicates that hole extraction crucially influences the actual photocatalytic reaction. To improve photocatalytic photon utilization, we facilitate hole extraction by lowering the semiconductor-cocatalyst contact barrier.

Three-Channel Electron Transfer for Estimating Time Constants Correlated with Photocatalytic Photon Utilization

Although the potential barrier for semiconductor-cocatalyst interfacial electron transfer can be reduced by intensifying the irradiation, the photocatalytic reaction still suffers from a low photon utilization. We here propose a trichannel electron transfer model to demonstrate that the photogenerated oxidative intermediates deprive electrons from the photocatalyst and compete with the target reaction. This model can evaluate the time constant for each electronic process involved in the target reaction and predict photocatalytic photon utilization, which is closely related to the evolution of the oxidative intermediates.

Photocatalyst: To Be Dispersed or To Be Immobilized? The Crucial Role of Electron Transport in Photocatalytic Fixed Bed Reaction

Photocatalytic fixed bed reactors allow a straightforward separation from the process stream and simplify the installation and operation in practical application. However, it is widely believed that the restriction on mass transport and volume activation severely slows the reaction. Here, we demonstrate that photocatalytic fixed bed reactors can deliver a superior reaction rate to the slurry suspension by rationally modulating the electronic process and the most concerning issue of mass transport occurring on a decisecond time scale does not retard the reaction. Although the long-distance transport of photogenerated electrons in porous semiconductor films toward catalytic sites encounters boundary scattering, this electronic process can be far faster than semiconductor-cocatalyst interfacial electron transfer occurring on the decisecond-second time scale. Besides, the fixed bed reaction can be freely amplified without losing photon utilization. Under irradiation provided by a 320 W Hg lamp, we realize a reaction rate of 0.262 mol/h with 65.2% quantum yield for anaerobic dehydrogenation of ethanol.
