Heterometal modified Fe3O4 hollow nanospheres as efficient catalysts for organic transformations

Efficient Machine Learning Model Focusing on Active Sites for the Discovery of Bifunctional Oxygen Electrocatalysts in Binary Alloys

The distinctive characteristics of alloy catalysts, encompassing composition, structure, and modifiable adsorption sites, present significant potential for the development of highly efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution/reduction reactions [oxygen evolution reactions (OERs)/oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs)]. Machine learning (ML) methods can quickly establish the relationship between material features and catalytic activity, thus accelerating the development of alloy electrocatalysts. However, the current abundance of features presents a crucial challenge in selecting the most pertinent ones. In this study, we explored seven intrinsic features directly derived from the material's structure, with a specific focus on the chemical environment of active sites and their nearest neighbors. An accurate and efficient ML model to predict potential bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts based on the intrinsic features of AB-type alloy active sites and intermediate free energies in the OERs/ORRs was established. These features possess clear physical and chemical meanings, closely linked to the electronic and geometric structures of active sites and neighboring atoms, thereby providing indispensable insights for the discovery of high-performance electrocatalysts. The ML model achieved R2 scores of 0.827, 0.913, and 0.711 for the predicted values of the three intermediate (OH, O, OOH) free energies, with corresponding mean absolute errors of 0.175, 0.242, and 0.200 eV, respectively. These results indicate that the ML model exhibits high accuracy in predicting the intermediate free energies. Furthermore, the ML model exhibited a prediction efficiency 150,000 times faster than traditional density functional theory calculations. This work will offer valuable insights and a framework for facilitating the rapid design of potential catalysts by ML methods.

Active metals decorated NiCo2O4 yolk-shell nanospheres as nanoreactors for catalytic reduction of nitroarenes and azo dyes

Transition-metal oxides (TMOs) have received a great deal of research attention and have been widely used in a variety of fields. However, conventional TMOs do not possess high specific surface area, sufficient active site on their surfaces, and limited their applications in catalysis. This study presents a two-step method for synthesizing active metal (M) decorated NiCo2O4 (M/NiCo2O4, M = Pd or Cu) nanospheres with yolk-shell nanostructures. Taking advantage of the unique morphology and the combination of dual active components (i.e., active NiCo2O4 substrate and decorated active metal), the as-prepared M/NiCo2O4 yolk-shell nanospheres can be employed as nanoreactors in the organic reactions. In catalyzing the reduction of a representative nitroarene (i.e., 4-NP) by NaBH4, the Pd/NiCo2O4 nanoreactors exhibit a superior catalytic efficiency to their counterparts (Cu/NiCo2O4 and NiCo2O4). The turnover frequency is much higher than that of various TMOs supported nanocatalysts have been reported over the past five years. Furthermore, the Pd/NiCo2O4 nanoreactors show excellent stability and common applicability of the reduction of various substituted nitrobenzenes and azo dyes. This work provides new rational design concept and preparation strategy for efficient nanoreactors with dual active components and sheds light on the practical application of chemical reactions.

Monometallic and Bimetallic Catalysts Supported on Praseodymium-Doped Ceria for the Water-Gas Shift Reaction

The water-gas shift (WGS) performance was investigated over 5%Ni/CeO2, 5%Ni/Ce0.95Pr0.05O1.975, and 1%Re4%Ni/Ce0.95Pr0.05O1.975 catalysts to decrease the CO amount and generate extra H2. CeO2 and Pr-doped CeO2 mixed oxides were synthesized using a combustion method. After that, Ni and Re were loaded onto the ceria support via an impregnation method. The structural and redox characteristics of monometallic Ni and bimetallic NiRe materials, which affect their water-gas shift performance, were investigated. The results show that the Pr addition into Ni/ceria increases the specific surface area, decreases the ceria crystallite size, and improves the dispersion of Ni on the CeO2 surface. Furthermore, Re addition results in the enhancement of the WGS performance of the Ni/Ce0.95Pr0.05O1.975 catalyst. Among the studied catalysts, the ReNi/Ce0.95Pr0.05O1.975 catalyst showed the highest catalytic activity, reaching 96% of CO conversion at 330°. It was established that the occurrence of more oxygen vacancies accelerates the redox process at the ceria surface. In addition, an increase in the Ni dispersion, Ni surface area, and surface acidity has a positive effect on hydrogen generation during the water-gas shift reaction due to favored CO adsorption.

Facile Construction of 2D/2D ZnIn2S4-Based Bifunctional Photocatalysts for H2 Production and Simultaneous Degradation of Rhodamine B and Tetracycline

A two-dimensional/two-dimensional (2D/2D) TiO2/ZnIn2S4 photocatalyst was reasonably proposed and constructed by a two-step oil bath-hydrothermal method. TiO2 nanosheets uniformly grown on the surface of ZnIn2S4 nanosheets and a synergetic effect between the TiO2 and ZnIn2S4 could highly contribute to improving the specific surface area and hydrophilicity of ZnIn2S4 as well as accelerating the separation and transfer of photon-generated e--h+ pairs, and thus enhancing the visible-light photocatalytic degradation and H2 evolution performance of ZnIn2S4. Rhodamine B (RhB) and tetracycline (TC) were simultaneously selected as the target pollutants for degradation in the work. The optimum photocatalytic RhB and TC degradation properties of TiO2/ZnIn2S4-10 wt% were almost 3.11- and 8.61-fold higher than that of pure ZnIn2S4, separately, while the highest photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate was also observed in the presence of TiO2/ZnIn2S4-10wt% and 4.28-fold higher than that of ZnIn2S4. Moreover, the possible photocatalytic mechanisms for enhanced visible-light photocatalytic degradation and H2 evolution were investigated and proposed in detail. Our research results open an easy pathway for developing efficient bifunctional photocatalysts.

Rape Straw Supported FeS Nanoparticles with Encapsulated Structure as Peroxymonosulfate and Hydrogen Peroxide Activators for Enhanced Oxytetracycline Degradation

Iron-based catalysts with high load content of iron sulfide (FeS) were commonly peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) activators to degrade organic pollutants but limited catalytic efficiency and increased risk of ferrous ion leaching restricted their use. Meanwhile, various biomass materials such as straw, peel, and branch have been extensively prepared into biochar for mechanical support for iron-based catalysts; however, the preparation process of biochar was energy-intensive. In this study, FeS nanoparticles modified rape straw composites (RS-FeS) encapsulated with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (RS-EDTA-FeS) were successfully presented by in-situ synthesis method for efficiently activating PMS and H₂O₂ to degrade oxytetracycline (OTC), which was economical and environmentally friendly. The results showed that the modified rape straw can remove OTC efficiently, and the addition of EDTA also significantly enhanced the stability and the reusability of the catalyst. In addition, EDTA also promoted the activation of H₂O₂ at neutral pH. The OTC degradation efficiency of the two catalysts by PMS was faster than that of H₂O₂, but H₂O₂ had a stronger ability to remove OTC than PMS. The highest OTC removal efficiency of RS-FeS and RS-EDTA-FeS were 87.51 and 81.15%. O₂^•- and ¹O₂ were the major reactive oxidative species (ROS) in the PMS system. Furthermore, compared with RS-FeS, the addition of EDTA inhabited the generation of O₂^•- in the PMS system. Instead, O₂^•- and ^•OH were the major ROS in the H₂O₂ system, but ¹O₂ was also identified in RS-FeS/H₂O₂ system. RS-EDTA-FeS showed a trend of rising first and then decreasing in recycle test. Instead, the removal rate of OTC by RS-FeS decreased significantly with the increase in reuse times. In the actual wastewater test, the TOC removal of two catalysts active by H₂O₂ was better than PMS, which was consistent with the test results of OTC, indicating that the two catalysts have application value in the removal of organic pollutants in actual wastewater. This study directly used plant materials as catalysts and omits the preparation process of biochar, greatly reduces the preparation cost and secondary pollution of catalysts, and provides theoretical support for the deepening of advanced oxidation technology.

Graphene Encapsulated Low-Load Nitrogen-Doped Bimetallic Magnetic Pd/Fe@N/C Catalyst for the Reductive Amination of Nitroarene Under Mild Conditions

Aniline is a group of important platform molecules that has been widely used in the synthesis of other high-value chemicals and pharmaceutical products. How to produce high-value anilines as the high-value chemical intermediates more efficiently and environmentally has always been a research topic in the industry. Catalytic hydrogenation is an environmentally friendly method for preparing halogenated anilines. Traditional noble metal catalysts face the problems of cost and noble metals residue. To improve the purity of the product as well as the activity and recyclability of the catalyst, we prepared a Pd/Fe magnetic bimetallic catalyst supported on N-doped carbon materials to reduce nitrobenzene to aniline under mild conditions. The catalyst has a low Pd loading of 2.35%. And the prepared bimetallic Pd/Fe@N/C catalyst showed excellent catalytic reactivity with the nitrobenzene conversion rate of 99%, and the aniline selectivity of 99% under mild reaction conditions of 0.8 MPa H2 and 40 °C. A variety of halogenated and aliphatic nitro compounds were well tolerated and had been transformed to the corresponding target amine products with excellent selectivity. In addition, the novel N-doped graphene-encapsulated bimetallic magnetic Pd/Fe@N/C catalyst not only had magnetic physical properties, which was easy to separate, recover, and used for the recycling of the catalyst without metal leaching but also catalyzed highly selective reductive amination of aromatics was a green, economical and environmentally friendly reaction with the only by-product of H2O.

Ni-Pd-Incorporated Fe3O4 Yolk-Shelled Nanospheres as Efficient Magnetically Recyclable Catalysts for Reduction of N-Containing Unsaturated Compounds

The use of metal-based heterogeneous catalysts for the degradation of N-containing organic dyes has attracted much attention due to their excellent treatment efficiency and capability. Here, we report the synthesis of heterometals (Ni and Pd)-incorporated Fe3O4 (Ni-Pd/Fe3O4) yolk-shelled nanospheres for the catalytic reduction of N-containing organic dyes using a facile combination of solvothermal treatment and high-temperature annealing steps. Benefiting from the magnetic properties and the yolk-shelled structure of the Fe3O4 support, as well as the uniformly dispersed active heterometals incorporated in the shell and yolk of spherical Fe3O4 nanoparticles, the as-prepared Ni-Pd/Fe3O4 composite shows excellent recyclability and enhanced catalytic activity for three N-containing organic dyes (e.g., 4-nitrophenol, Congo red, and methyl orange) compared with its mono metal counterparts (e.g., Ni/Fe3O4 and Pd/Fe3O4). In the 4-nitrophenol reduction reaction, the catalytic activity of Ni-Pd/Fe3O4 was superior to many Fe3O4-supported nanocatalysts reported within the last five years. This work provides an effective strategy to boost the activity of iron oxide-based catalytic materials via dual or even multiple heterometallic incorporation strategy and sheds new light on environmental catalysis.
