Micellar electrokinetic chromatography with polyelectrolyte complexes as micellar pseudo-stationary phases

Recent advances of ionic liquids and polymeric ionic liquids in capillary electrophoresis and capillary electrochromatography

Ionic liquids (ILs) and polymeric ionic liquids (PILs) with unique and fascinating properties have drawn considerable interest for their use in separation science, especially in chromatographic techniques. In this article, significant contributions of ILs and PILs in the improvement of capillary electrophoresis and capillary electrochromatography are described, and a specific overview of the most relevant examples of their applications in the last five years is also given. Accordingly, some general conclusions and future perspectives in these areas are discussed.

Application of ionic liquids in liquid chromatography and electrodriven separation

Ionic liquids (ILs) are salts in the liquid state at ambient temperature, which are nonvolatile, nonflammable with high thermal stability and dissolve easily for a wide range of inorganic and organic materials. As a kind of potential green solvent, they show high efficiency and selectivity in the field of separation research, especially in instrumental analysis. Thus far, ILs have been successfully applied by many related researchers in high-performance liquid chromatography and capillary electrophoresis as chromatographic stationary phases, mobile phase additives or electroosmotic flow modifiers. This paper provides a detailed review of these applications in the study of natural products, foods, drugs and other fine chemicals. Furthermore, the prospects of ILs in liquid chromatographic and electrodriven techniques are discussed.

MEKC as a powerful growing analytical technique

This review summarizes the principle and the developments in MEKC in terms of separation power, sensitivity, and detection approaches more than 25 years after its appearance. Newly used surfactants are mentioned. Classical and new sample concentration techniques in MEKC are described. The different detection approaches in MEKC with advantages, limitations, and future prospects are also discussed. This review highlights the wider application of MEKC in different analytical fields. Various recent selected applications of this technique in different analytical fields are reported.

Advanced separation methods of food anthocyanins, isoflavones and flavanols

In recent years, increasing knowledge of the positive health effects of food polyphenols has prompted the need to develop new separation techniques for their extraction, fractionation and analysis. This article provides an updated and exhaustive review of the application of counter-current chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography, capillary electrophoresis, and their hyphenation with mass spectrometry to the study of food polyphenols. Flavonoids constitute the largest class of polyphenols, widely spread in the plant kingdom and common in human diet which has been the most widely studied with respect to their antioxidant and biological activities. The main subgroups are anthocyanins, catechins, isoflavones, flavonols and flavones. They are reported to exhibit antioxidant, anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-atherogenic, anti-thrombotic, and immune modulating functions, among others. Since red fruit anthocyanins, soy isoflavones and flavanols from grapes and teas are currently the most used phenolic compounds for producing new nutraceuticals and functional foods, this review is focused on these three flavonoid groups.

Electrokinetic chromatography with polymeric pseudostationary phases

Recent research and development efforts concerning polymeric pseudostationary phases (PSPs) for electrokinetic chromatography are reviewed. The introduction of new materials, characterization of structural effects on performance and selectivity, applications, and the use of polymeric PSPs with mass spectrometric detection are considered. Very interesting results concerning the effects of polymer structure have been reported. Significant developments have also been reported in the development of novel applications of polymeric PSPs, particularly for sample preconcentration using micellar affinity gradient focusing. The use of mass spectrometric detection with electrokinetic chromatography has seen significant development, and recent reports indicate that this is a robust and sensitive approach.

On-line sample preconcentration by sweeping with dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide in capillary zone electrophoresis

On-line sample preconcentration of oligonucleotides with a new sweeping carrier was developed by using dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) below the critical micelle concentration (CMC). The sweeping results with DTAB below and above the CMC were compared. The use of DTAB below the CMC benefits the preconcentration of the oligonucleotides, while the use of DTAB above the CMC is good for hydrophobic small molecules. The factors affecting the sweeping results were optimized and this method was evaluated by constructing calibration curves for thrombin aptamers. The sweeping scheme produced a 112-fold sensitivity enhancement for the oligonucleotides relative to that run in a running buffer without DTAB. The sweeping method developed here can be a good reinforcement of the preconcentration scheme by sweeping when less-hydrophobic analytes or large negatively-charged molecules need to be preconcentrated.

The selectivity in MEKC of pseudo-stationary phases based on polyelectrolyte complexes: I. Composition of the complex

Polyelectrolyte-surfactant complexes (PSC) of polycarboxylic acids with alkyl-trimethylammonium salts look very promising as a new type of pseudo-stationary phase in micellar electrokinetic chromatography. PSC produce an intramolecular micellar phase, and the morphology of the micelles is significantly different from that of the corresponding "typical" surfactant micelles. Pseudo-stationary phases based on PSC have unique selectivity. In this paper, the effect of the composition (phi) of the PSC of polyacrylic acid (PAA) M(W) 130,000 with dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) and of the PSC of PAA M(W) 450,000 with DTAB on the separation of DNS-amino acids and phenol derivatives in these systems was investigated. Relative retention and relative selectivity were used to describe the electrophoretic behavior of the amino acids and phenol derivatives. The main advantage of PSC pseudo-phases is that the nature and the structure of micelle-like units, and hence the selectivity of electrophoretic separation, could easily be modified by changing the composition of the complex.

Recent advances in micellar electrokinetic chromatography

This review contains nearly 200 reference citations, and covers advances in electrokinetic capillary chromatography based on micelles, including stabilized micelle complexes, polymeric and mixed micelles from 2003-2004. Detection strategies, analyte determinations, and applications in micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography (MEKC) are discussed. Information regarding methods of analyte concentration, analyte specific analyses, and nonstandard micelles has been summarized in tabular form to provide a means of rapid access to information pertinent to the reader.

Recent progress in the use of soluble ionic polymers as pseudostationary phases for electrokinetic chromatography

This review concerns the development, characterization, and application of soluble ionic polymeric materials as pseudostationary phases for electrokinetic chromatography since 2002. Cationic polymers, anionic siloxanes, polymerized surfactants (micelle polymers), and chiral polymers are considered. The use of stable suspensions of polymer nanoparticles in electrokinetic chromatography is also reviewed.
