An insight into the determination of trace levels of benzodiazepines in biometric systems: Use of crab shell powder as an environmentally friendly biosorbent

Determination of Phthalate Esters in Cosmetics and Baby Care Products by a Biosorbent Based on Lawsone Capped Chitosan and Followed by Liquid Chromatography

This research presents a green synthetic pathway for the preparation of a new biosorbent and eco-friendly extraction process of three phthalate esters: dimethyl phthalate, di-butyl phthalate and benzyl butyl phthalate, from cosmetics and baby care products. Dispersive solid-phase extraction was used based on a new core-shell biomass/sorbent; chitosan-loaded lawsone. The proposed method provides fortunate trapping of phthalate esters in a one-step extraction. Under the optimized extraction conditions, the current work was presented low detection limits (0.03-0.15 ng. g-1), limits of quantification (0.1-0.5 ng·g-1) and reasonable linearity (0.1-10 000 ng. g-1). The applicability of the method was estimated by recovery experiments at different spiking levels (n = 5) for phthalate esters in the real samples.

Calcium/Copper Alginate Framework Doped with CuO Nanoparticles as a Novel Adsorbent for Micro-extraction of Benzodiazepines from Human Serum

Background:

Sample preparation is one of the most challenging phases in pharmaceutical analysis, especially in biological matrices, affecting the whole analytical methodology.

Objective:

In this study, a new Ca(II)/Cu(II)/alginate/CuO Nanoparticles Hydrogel Fiber (CCACHF) was synthesized through a simple, green procedure and applied for fiber micro solid-phase extraction (FMSPE) of diazepam (DIZ) and oxazepam (OXZ) as model drugs prior to high-performance liquid chromatography-UV detection (HPLC-UV).

Methods:

Composition and morphology of the prepared fiber were characterized and the effect of main parameters on the fiber fabrication and extraction efficiency have been studied and optimized.

Results:

In optimal conditions, calibration curves were linear, ranging between 0.1–500 μg L−1 with regression coefficients of 0.9938 and 0.9968. Limit of Detection (LOD) (S/N=3) and Limit of Quantification (LOQ) (S/N=10) of the technique for DIZ and OXZ were 0.03 to 0.1 μg L−1. Within-day and between-day Relative Standard Deviations (RSDs) for DIZ and OXZ were 6.0–12.5% and 3.3–9.4%, respectively.

Conclusion:

The fabricated adsorbent has been substantially employed to the extraction of selected benzo-diazepines (BZDs) from human serum real specimens and the obtained recoveries were also satisfactory (82.1-109.7%).

A Comprehensive Review on Developed Pharmaceutical Analysis Methods by Iranian Analysts in 2018

This article summarizes the publishing activities including bioanalytical and pharmaceutical analyses researches carried out in Iran in 2018 in order to connect academic researchers to those in industry, medical care units and hospitals. A wide spectrum of analytical methods has been used to determine and/or evaluate drug levels in the biological samples, based on physical, chemical and biochemical principles. We have compiled a concise survey of the literature covering 125 reports and tabulated the relevant analytical parameters. Chromatographic and electrochemical methods were found to be the technique of choice for many workers and almost 83% studies were performed by using these methods. This is the first annual review of the literature searching in SCOPUS database for published bioanalytical and pharmaceutical analysis researches in Iran.

Synthesis optimisation and characterisation of chitosan-calcite adsorbent from fishery-food waste for phosphorus removal

Here, Box-Behnken design (BBD) approaches were utilised to optimise synthesis methodology for the chitosan-calcite rich adsorbent (CCM) made from fishery-food waste material (crab carapace), using low-temperature activation and potassium hydroxide (KOH). The effect of activation temperature, activation time and impregnation ratio was studied. The final adsorbent material was evaluated for its phosphorus (P) removal efficiency from liquid phase. Results showed that impregnation ratio was the most significant individual factor as this acted to increase surface deacetylation of the chitin (to chitosan) and increased the number of amine groups (-NH₂) in the chitosan chain. P removal efficiency approached 75.89% (at initial P concentration of 20 mg/L) under optimised experimental conditions, i.e. where the impregnation ratio for KOH:carapace (g/g) was 1:1, the activation temperature was 105 °C and the activation time was 150 min. Predicted responses were in good agreement with the experimental data. Additionally, the pristine and CCM material were further analysed using scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller technique (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). Characterisation showed enhancements in surface chemistry (introducing positively charged amine groups), textural properties and thermal stability of the CCM.
