Calculation of the dynamic impedance of the double layer on a planar electrode by the theory of electrokinetics

Semiconducting enriched carbon nanotube aligned arrays of tunable density and their electrical transport properties

We demonstrate assembly of solution-processed semiconducting enriched (99%) single-walled carbon nanotubes (s-SWNTs) in an array with varying linear density via ac dielectrophoresis (DEP) and investigate detailed electronic transport properties of the fabricated devices. We show that (i) the quality of the alignment varies with frequency of the applied voltage and that (ii) by varying the frequency and concentration of the solution, we can control the linear density of the s-SWNTs in the array from 1/μm to 25/μm. The DEP assembled s-SWNT devices provide the opportunity to investigate the transport property of the arrays in the direct transport regime. Room temperature electron transport measurements of the fabricated devices show that with increasing nanotube density the device mobility increases while the current on-off ratio decreases dramatically. For the dense array, the device current density was 16 μA/μm, on-conductance was 390 μS, and sheet resistance was 30 kΩ/◻. These values are the best reported so far for any semiconducting nanotube array.

kT-scale colloidal interactions in high frequency inhomogeneous AC electric fields. I. Single particles

We report nonintrusive optical microscopy measurements of single micrometer-sized silica and polystyrene colloids in inhomogeneous AC electric fields as a function of field amplitude and frequency. By using a Boltzmann inversion of the time-averaged sampling of single particles within inhomogeneous electric fields, we sensitively measure induced dipole-field interactions on the kT energy scale and fN force scale. Measurements are reported for frequencies when the particle polarizability is greater and less than the medium, as well as the crossover between these conditions when dipole-field interactions vanish. For all cases, the measured interactions are well-described by theoretical potentials by fitting a nondimensional induced dipole-field magnitude. While silica dipole-field magnitudes are well-described by existing electrokinetic models, the polystyrene results suggest an anomalously high surface conductance. Sensitive measurements of dipole-field interactions in this work provide a basis to understand dipole-dipole interactions in particle ensembles in the same measurement geometry in part II.

Investigation of layer-by-layer assembled heparin and chitosan multilayer films via electrochemical spectroscopy

The layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly as a simple and effective method has been extensively used to prepare polyelectrolyte films but the buildup mechanism is expected to be further clarified. In this work, the structure and formation mechanism of LbL-assembled heparin/chitosan multilayer composite films were characterized by electrochemical system, scanning electron microscope and atom force microscope. The results revealed that the film grew linearly in the first 10 bilayers based on measured linear increase of film resistance with number of layers, while the film grew exponentially in the later 10 bilayers based on measured nonlinear increase of film resistance. The charge-transfer resistance increased in an oscillatory way or a linear way at different growing stages, which was discussed with their formation mechanism and the interfacial structure on electrode. A buildup mode of the LbL film was suggested based on the structural and electrochemical characters.

On-chip micromanipulation and assembly of colloidal particles by electric fields

We overview the ways in which electric fields can be used for on-chip manipulation and assembly of colloidal particles. Particles suspended in water readily respond to alternating (AC) or direct current (DC) electric fields. Charged particles in DC fields are moved towards oppositely charged electrodes by electrophoresis. Dielectrophoresis, particle mobility in AC fields, allows precise manipulation of particles through a range of parameters including field strength and frequency and electrode geometry. Simultaneously, DC or AC electrokinetics may drive liquid flows inside the experimental cells, which also leads to transport and redistribution of the suspended particles. Examples of dielectrophoretic manipulation and assembly of nanoparticles and microparticles by planar on-chip electrodes are presented. The structures assembled include conductive microwires from metallic nanoparticles and switchable two-dimensional crystals from polymer microspheres. We also discuss how dielectrophoresis and AC electrokinetics can be used in droplet-based microfluidic chips, biosensors, and devices for collection of particles from diluted suspensions.
