Some remarks on the calculation of the pore size distribution function of activated carbons

Treatment of aqueous diethyl phthalate by adsorption using a functional polymer resin

To study the adsorptive separation efficiency, adsorption and desorption performances of diethyl phthalate (DEP) were investigated with a functional polymer resin (NDA-702). A macroporous polymer resin (XAD-4) and a coal-based granular activated carbon (AC-750) were chosen for comparison. The kinetic adsorption data obeyed the pseudo-second-order rate model, and the adsorption processes were limited by both film and intraparticle diffusions. Adsorption equilibrium data were well fitted by the Freundlich equation, and the larger uptake and higher selection of NDA-702 than AC-750 and XAD-4 was probably due to the microporous structure, phenyl rings and polar groups on NDA-702. Thermodynamic adsorption studies indicated that the test adsorbents spontaneously adsorbed DEP, driven mainly by enthalpy change. Continuous fixed-bed runs demonstrated that there no significant loss of the resin's adsorption capacity and there was complete regeneration of NDA-702. The results suggest that NDA-702 has excellent potential as an adsorption material for water treatment.

Brownian dynamics simulations of a dispersion composed of two-types of spherical particles: for development of a new technology to improve the visibility of rivers and lakes

We have carried out Brownian dynamics simulations of sedimentation phenomena of a dispersion composed of two-kinds of spherical particles under the gravity field. This study may be the first step to develop a new technology which enables us to improve the visibility of rivers and lakes. In the present study, we have modeled sub-micrometer-dimension particles, or dirty particles, as small spherical particles, and capturing particles as large spherical particles; these two-kinds of particles conduct Brownian motion in water, and large particles adsorb small particles to sediment gradually toward the bottom in the gravity field. From the results of simulations, the influences of Brownian motion, the size of each particle, and the gravity force on the performance of the adsorption of large particles have been discussed. In addition, we have discussed what the most appropriate situation of large particles is to accomplish the most effective adsorption rate or improve the visibility of water most effectively in terms of capturing particles. The most important conclusion derived from the present results is that, in order to improve the capturing performance, the Brownian motion of large particles has to be activated in an appropriate number density without losing the influence of the gravity.

Hyper-parallel tempering Monte Carlo simulations of Ar adsorption in new models of microporous non-graphitizing activated carbon: effect of microporosity

The adsorption of gases on microporous carbons is still poorly understood, partly because the structure of these carbons is not well known. Here, a model of microporous carbons based on fullerene-like fragments is used as the basis for a theoretical study of Ar adsorption on carbon. First, a simulation box was constructed, containing a plausible arrangement of carbon fragments. Next, using a new Monte Carlo simulation algorithm, two types of carbon fragments were gradually placed into the initial structure to increase its microporosity. Thirty six different microporous carbon structures were generated in this way. Using the method proposed recently by Bhattacharya and Gubbins (BG), the micropore size distributions of the obtained carbon models and the average micropore diameters were calculated. For ten chosen structures, Ar adsorption isotherms (87 K) were simulated via the hyper-parallel tempering Monte Carlo simulation method. The isotherms obtained in this way were described by widely applied methods of microporous carbon characterisation, i.e. Nguyen and Do, Horvath-Kawazoe, high-resolution α(s) plots, adsorption potential distributions and the Dubinin-Astakhov (DA) equation. From simulated isotherms described by the DA equation, the average micropore diameters were calculated using empirical relationships proposed by different authors and they were compared with those from the BG method.

Improved adsorption of 4-nitrophenol onto a novel hHyper-cross-linked polymer

In the present study we prepared a hyper-cross-linked polymeric adsorbent (NDA-701) possessing a uniquely bimodal pore size distribution for 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) adsorption from water. A macroporous polymeric adsorbent Amberlite XAD-4 and a granular activated carbon GAC-1 were chosen for comparison. NDA-701 exhibited better mechanical strength and higher capacity of 4-NP than XAD-4, which possibly resulted from its hyper-cross-linking nature and micropore structure, respectively. 4-NP adsorption isotherm onto NDA-701 is well described by the Freundlich model, and its better kinetics performance than GAC-1 resulted from its macropore structure. After adsorption NDA-701 was amenable to an entire regeneration by using NaOH solution as regenerant, whereas only approximately 75% regeneration efficiency was observed for GAC-1. Results of continuous fixed-bed runs in pilot and industrial scale demonstrated that NDA-701 is capable of completely removing 4-NP from chemical effluent with no capacity loss, and 4-NP can be readily recovered by further treatment of the concentrated regenerant solution. It is attractive that the value of the recovered 4-NP from chemical wastewater will even engender a surplus after countervailing all the operation cost during field application.

Bimodal pore size distributions for carbons: Experimental results and computational studies

It is well known that the bimodal shape of the pore size distribution (PSD) curves is typical for various carbonaceous materials (of different origin and/or treated thermally or chemically). A systematic investigation of this effect has been discussed using the Nguyen and Do method with proposed recently the ASA algorithm. A series of numerically generated adsorption isotherms (N(2), T=77 K) and experimental data were analyzed. We investigated various possible situations related to the shape of the PSD curves, i.e., the intensity of the both peaks, their mutual location and the vanishing of one of them. Moreover, the problem in the similarity of the local adsorption isotherms from the range of pore widths corresponding to the gap between peaks is discussed. The analysis of obtained results (as well as published by others) shows that the bimodal shape of the pore size distributions is a characteristic feature for many adsorbents possessing even a small amount of micropores. It is shown that this feature results from the similarity of the local adsorption isotherm in the range of the pore widths for which the gap between peaks (related to the primary and secondary micropore filling mechanism) exists.
