Adsorption characteristics of zwitterionic diblock copolymers at the silica/aqueous solution interface

Controlling Adsorption of Diblock Copolymer Nanoparticles onto an Aldehyde-Functionalized Hydrophilic Polymer Brush via pH Modulation

Sterically stabilized diblock copolymer nanoparticles with a well-defined spherical morphology and tunable diameter were prepared by RAFT aqueous emulsion polymerization of benzyl methacrylate at 70 °C. The steric stabilizer precursor used for these syntheses contained pendent cis-diol groups, which means that such nanoparticles can react with a suitable aldehyde-functional surface via acetal bond formation. This principle is examined herein by growing an aldehyde-functionalized polymer brush from a planar silicon wafer and studying the extent of nanoparticle adsorption onto this model substrate from aqueous solution at 25 °C using a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). The adsorbed amount, Γ, depends on both the nanoparticle diameter and the solution pH, with minimal adsorption observed at pH 7 or 10 and substantial adsorption achieved at pH 4. Variable-temperature QCM studies provide strong evidence for chemical adsorption, while scanning electron microscopy images recorded for the nanoparticle-coated brush surface after drying indicate mean surface coverages of up to 62%. This fundamental study extends our understanding of the chemical adsorption of nanoparticles on soft substrates.

A Study on the Dual Thermo- and pH-Responsive Behaviors of Well-Defined Star-like Block Copolymers Synthesize by Combining of RAFT Polymerization and Thiol-Ene Click Reaction

A series of stimuli-responsive star-like block copolymers are synthesized via the combination of reversible addition, fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, and photo-initiated thiol-ene (PITE) click reaction. The controllable block ratio and block sequence, narrow distribution of molecular weight, and customized arm numbers of the star-shaped copolymers reveal the feasibility and benefits of combination of RAFT polymerization and PITE click reaction for synthesis of well-defined star-like (co)polymers. A clear insight into the relationship among the arm number, block sequence, and block ratio of the star-like block copolymers and their stimuli-responsive aggregation behavior was achieved via dynamic light scattering and UV-vis spectroscopy study. Notably, the star-like poly(acrylic acid)-b-poly(2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate) (star-PAA-b-PDMAEMA) shows higher lower critical solution temperature (LCST) compared to star-PDMAEMA-b-PAA with the same arm number and block ratio due to the inner charged PAA segments at pH > IEP. In addition, for star-like PAA-b-PDMAEMA, higher PAA content enhances the hydrophilicity of the polymer in basic solution and leads to the LCST increase, except for star-PAA1-b-PDMAEMA4 at pH = 9.0 (≈IEP). For star-PDMAEMA-b-PAA, the PAA content shows minimal effect on their LCSTs, except for the polymer in solution with pH = 9.5, which is far from their IEP. The star-like block copolymers with well-defined structure and tunable composition, especially the facile-controlled block sequence, bring us a challenging opportunity to control the stimuli-responsive properties of star-like block copolymers.

Structure of adsorbed polyelectrolyte monolayers investigated by combining optical reflectometry and piezoelectric techniques

Polyelectrolyte monolayers on solid substrates are studied with optical reflectivity and the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). In particular, we investigate the adsorption of anionic poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS) on amino-functionalized silica as well as cationic poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly-L-lysine (PLL) on bare silica. By comparing the dry and wet masses measured on identical substrates with these two techniques, we obtain information on the layer thickness and water content of these layers. Monolayers typically feature an adsorbed dry mass of about 0.1-2 mg/m(2), a layer thickness of 0.5-2 nm, and a water content of 20-50%. One finds that the layer thickness increases with increasing concentrations of monovalent salts and polyelectrolytes.

Lysine-based zwitterionic molecular micelle for simultaneous separation of acidic and basic proteins using open tubular capillary electrochromatography

In this work, a zwitterionic molecular micelle, poly-epsilon-sodium-undecanoyl lysinate (poly-epsilon-SUK), was synthesized and employed as a coating in open tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC) for protein separation. The zwitterionic poly-epsilon-SUK containing both carboxylic acid and amine groups can be either protonated or deprotonated depending on the pH of the background electrolyte; therefore, either an overall positively or negatively charged coating can be achieved. This zwitterionic coating allows protein separations in either normal or reverse polarity mode depending on the pH of the background electrolyte. The protein mixtures contained four basic proteins (lysozyme, cytochrome c, alpha-chymotrypsinogen A, and ribonuclease A) and six acidic proteins (myoglobin, deoxyribonuclease I, beta-lactoglobulin A, beta-lactoglobulin B, alpha-lactalbumin, and albumin). Protein separations were optimized specifically for acidic (reverse mode) and basic (normal mode) pH values. Varying the polymer thickness by changing the polymer and salt concentration had a great influence on protein resolution, while nearly all peaks were also baseline resolved in both modes using the optimized poly-epsilon-SUK coating concentration of 0.4% (w/v). Proteins in human sera were separated under optimized acidic and basic conditions in order to demonstrate the general utility of this coating. Nanoscale characterizations of the poly-epsilon-SUK micellar coatings on silicon surfaces were accomplished using atomic force microscopy (AFM) to gain insight into the morphology and thickness of the zwitterionic coating. The thickness of the polymer coating ranged from 0.9 to 2.4 nm based on local measurements using nanoshaving, an AFM-based method of nanolithography.

Characterization of layer-by-layer self-assembled multilayer films of diblock copolymer micelles

The in situ layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly of low Tg diblock copolymer micelles onto a flat silica substrate is reported. The copolymers used here were a cationic poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)-block-poly(2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (50qPDMA-PDEA; 50q refers to a mean degree of quaternization of 50 mol % for the PDMA block) and zwitterionic poly(methacrylic acid)-block-poly(2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PMAA-PDEA), which has anionic character at pH 9. Alternate deposition of micelles formed by these two copolymers onto a silica substrate at pH 9 was examined. The in situ LbL buildup of the copolymer micelle films was monitored using zeta potential measurements, optical reflectometry, and a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D). For a six layer deposition, complete charge reversal was observed after the addition of each layer. The OR data indicated clearly an increase in adsorbed mass with each additional micelle layer and suggest that some interdiffusion of copolymer chains between layers and/or an increase in the film roughness, and hence in the effective surface area of the micellar multilayers, must take place as the film is built up. QCM-D data indicated that the self-assembled micellar multilayers on a flat silica substrate undergo structural changes over a prolonged period. This is attributed to longer-term interdiffusion of the copolymer chains between the outer two layers after the initial adsorption of each layer is complete. The QCM-D data further suggest that the outer adsorbed layers adopt a progressively more extended conformation, particularly for the higher numbered layers. The morphology of each successive layer was characterized using in situ soft-contact atomic force microscopy, and micelle-like surface aggregates are clearly observed within each layer of the complex film, suggesting the persistence of aggregate structures throughout the multilayer structure.
