Pd–Pt and Fe–Ni nanoparticles formed by covalent molecular assembly in supercritical carbon dioxide

Preparation of FeCo/C-N and FeNi/C-N Nanocomposites from Acrylamide Co-Crystallizates and Their Use as Lubricant Additives

FeCo and FeNi nanoalloy particles encapsulated in a nitrogen-doped carbonized shell (FeCo/C-N and FeNi/C-N) were synthesized by thermolysis at 400 °C of polyacrylamide complexes after frontal polymerization of co-crystallizate of Fe and Co or Ni nitrates and acrylamide. During the thermolysis of polyacrylamide complexes in a self-generated atmosphere, Co(II) or Ni(II) and Fe(III) cations are reduced to form FeCo and FeNi nanoalloy particles, while polyacrylamide simultaneously forms a nitrogen-doped carbon shell layer. This unique architecture provides high chemical and thermal stability of the resulting nanocomposites. The average crystallite size of FeCo and FeNi nanoparticles is 10 and 12 nm, respectively. The nanocomposites were studied by X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The nanocomposites have been tested as antifriction and antiwear additives in lubricating oils. The optimal concentrations of nanoparticles were determined, at which the antifriction and antiwear properties of the lubricant manifest themselves in the best possible way.

Recent Developments in Plasmonic Alloy Nanoparticles: Synthesis, Modelling, Properties and Applications

Despite the traditional plasmonic materials are counted on one hand, there are a lot of possible combinations leading to alloys with other elements of the periodic table, in particular those renowned for magnetic or catalytic properties. It is not a surprise, therefore, that nanoalloys are considered for their ability to open new perspectives in the panorama of plasmonics, representing a leading research sector nowadays. This is demonstrated by a long list of studies describing multiple applications of nanoalloys in photonics, photocatalysis, sensing and magneto-optics, where plasmons are combined with other physical and chemical phenomena. In some remarkable cases, the amplification of the conventional properties and even new effects emerged. However, this field is still in its infancy and several challenges must be overcome, starting with the synthesis (control of composition, crystalline order, size, processability, achievement of metastable phases and disordered compounds) as well as the modelling of the structure and properties (accuracy of results, reliability of structural predictions, description of disordered phases, evolution over time) of nanoalloys. To foster the research on plasmonic nanoalloys, here we provide an overview of the most recent results and developments in the field, organized according to synthetic strategies, modelling approaches, dominant properties and reported applications. Considering the several plasmonic nanoalloys under development as well as the large number of those still awaiting synthesis, modelling, properties assessment and technological exploitation, we expect a great impact on the forthcoming solutions for sustainability, ultrasensitive and accurate detection, information processing and many other fields.

Synthesis of Metal Nanostructures Using Supercritical Carbon Dioxide: A Green and Upscalable Process

Metallic nanostructures have numerous applications as industrial catalysts and sensing platforms. Supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO₂ ) is a green medium for the scalable preparation of nanomaterials. Supercritical fluid reactive deposition (SFRD) and other allied techniques can be employed for the mass production of metal nanostructures for various applications. The present article reviews the recent reports on the scCO₂ -assisted preparation of zero-valent metal nanomaterials and their applications. A brief description of the science of pure supercritical fluids, especially CO₂ , and the basics of binary mixtures composed of scCO₂ and a low volatile substance, e.g., an organometallic precursor are presented. The benefits of using scCO₂ for preparing metal nanomaterials, especially as a green solvent, are also being highlighted. The experimental conditions that are useful for the tuning of particle properties are reviewed thoroughly. The range of modifications to the classical SFRD methods and the variety of metallic nanomaterials that can be synthesized are reviewed and presented. Finally, the broad ranges of applications that are reported for the metallic nanomaterials that are synthesized using scCO₂ are reviewed. A brief summary along with perspectives about future research directions is also presented.

Adsorption and Dissociation of Ni(acac)2 on Iron by Ab Initio Calculations

Among metal β-diketonates, nickel acetylacetonate (Ni(acac)₂) has been widely employed as a precursor for many chemical structures, due to its catalytic properties. Here, we investigate, by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the adsorption and dissociation of this complex: after an evaluation of the structural and electronic properties of Ni(acac)₂, a comparison between different dissociation patterns reveals that the most favorable pattern for the complex adsorbed on iron is different from the one suggested by considering the strength of the bonds in the isolated complex and an attempt to generalize this dissociation model is made in this work. Moreover, the most favorable adsorption configurations turned out to be a long bridge positioning of the nickel atom along with an on top positioning of the oxygen atoms of Ni(acac)₂, while a short bridge positioning is the most favorable for the central metallic unit alone.

Binary Diffusion Coefficients of Platinum(II) Acetylacetonate in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide

Binary diffusion coefficients (D₁₂) and retention factors (k) of platinum(II) acetylacetonate at infinitesimal concentration in supercritical (sc) carbon dioxide (CO₂) were measured by the chromatographic impulse response method with a poly(ethylene glycol) coated capillary column at temperatures from (308.15 to 343.15) K and pressures from (8.5 to 40.0) MPa, and D₁₂ in liquid ethanol at temperatures from (298.15 to 333.15) K and atmospheric pressure by the Taylor dispersion method. As has been seen for our previously reported data on other metal complexes measured in sc CO₂ and organic solvents, the D₁₂ data in sc CO₂ and liquid ethanol were represented by a function of temperature and solvent viscosity. The D₁₂ values for metal complexes were not related to the solute molecular weights. The k values in sc CO₂ were expressed by a function of temperature and CO₂ density.

Stable Organic Monolayers on Oxide-Free Silicon/Germanium in a Supercritical Medium: A New Route to Molecular Electronics

Oxide-free Si and Ge surfaces have been passivated and modified with organic molecules by forming covalent bonds between the surfaces and reactive end groups of linear alkanes and aromatic species using single-step deposition in supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO2). The process is suitable for large-scale manufacturing due to short processing times, simplicity, and high resistance to oxidation. It also allows the formation of monolayers with varying reactive terminal groups, thus enabling formation of nanostructures engineered at the molecular level. Ballistic electron emission microscopy (BEEM) spectra performed on the organic monolayer on oxide-free silicon capped by a thin gold layer reveals for the first time an increase in transmission of the ballistic current through the interface of up to three times compared to a control device, in contrast to similar studies reported in the literature suggestive of oxide-free passivation in SCCO2. The SCCO2 process combined with the preliminary BEEM results opens up new avenues for interface engineering, leading to molecular electronic devices.
