A New Approach in Prebiotic Chemistry Studies: Proline Sorption Triggered by Mineral Surfaces Analysed Using XPS

The role of minerals in the origin of life and prebiotic evolution remains unknown and controversial. Mineral surfaces have the potential to facilitate prebiotic polymerization due to their ability to adsorb and concentrate biomolecules that subsequently can catalyse reactions; however, the precise nature of the interaction between the mineral host and the guest biomolecule still needs to be understood. In this context, we spectroscopically characterized, using infrared, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques, the interaction between L-proline and montmorillonite, olivine, iron disulphide, and haematite (minerals of prebiotic interest), by evaluating their interaction from a liquid medium. This work provides insight into the chemical processes occurring between proline, the only cyclic amino acid, and this selection of minerals, each of them bearing a particular chemical and crystal structures. Proline was successfully adsorbed on montmorillonite, haematite, olivine, and iron disulphide in anionic and zwitterionic chemical forms, being the predominant form directly related to the mineral structure and composition. Silicates (montmorillonite) dominate adsorption, whereas iron oxides (haematite) show the lowest molecular affinity. This approach will help to understand structure-affinity relationship between the mineral surfaces and proline, one of the nine amino acids generated in the Miller-Urey experiment.

A diamino-functionalized silsesquioxane pillared graphene oxide for CO2 capture

In the race for viable solutions that could slow down carbon emissions and help in meeting the climate change targets a lot of effort is being made towards the development of suitable CO₂ adsorbents with high surface area, tunable pore size and surface functionalities that could enhance selective adsorption. Here, we explored the use of silsesquioxane pillared graphene oxide for CO₂ capture; we modified silsesquioxane loading and processing parameters in order to obtain pillared structures with nanopores of the tailored size and surface properties to maximize the CO₂ sorption capacity. Powder X-ray diffraction, XPS and FTIR spectroscopies, thermal analysis (DTA/TGA), surface area measurements and CO₂ adsorption measurements were employed to characterize the materials and evaluate their performance. Through this optimisation process, materials with good CO₂ storage capacities of up to 1.7/1.5 mmol g⁻¹ at 273 K/298 K in atmospheric pressure, were achieved.

Designing nanoarchitecture for environmental remediation based on the clay minerals as building block

Nanoarchitecture of hybrids materials based on clay minerals as nano building blocks for the environmental remediation is summarized with the emphasis on the utilization of layered clay minerals, especially smectite group of clay minerals, as nano building blocks for designing functional nanostructures for the adsorption of molecular contaminants from the environments. Smectites are well-known adsorbents of cationic contaminants, while surface modification of smectites with organoammonium ions has given hydrophobic and microporous characters to uptake nonionic organic contaminants from environments. Not only on the designed interactions between adsorbent-adsorbate for efficient and higher capacity adsorption, the states of the adsorbed nonionic organic compounds have been altered and varied by the modification of smectites as shown by the controlled release and specific catalytic reactions. The organically modified clays are classified from the nanoarchitecture, and the functions derived from the nanoarchitectures are discussed based on the structure-property relationship.

New Porous Heterostructures Based on Organo-Modified Graphene Oxide for CO2 Capture

In this work, we report on a facile and rapid synthetic procedure to create highly porous heterostructures with tailored properties through the silylation of organically modified graphene oxide. Three silica precursors with various structural characteristics (comprising alkyl or phenyl groups) were employed to create high-yield silica networks as pillars between the organo-modified graphene oxide layers. The removal of organic molecules through the thermal decomposition generates porous heterostructures with very high surface areas (≥ 500 m²/g), which are very attractive for potential use in diverse applications such as catalysis, adsorption and as fillers in polymer nanocomposites. The final hybrid products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy and porosity measurements. As proof of principle, the porous heterostructure with the maximum surface area was chosen for investigating its CO₂ adsorption properties.

Fabrication of highly ordered Cu2+/Fe3+ decorated polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane hybrids: How metal coordination influences structure

Incorporation of isolated metal centers into well-organized nanostructures is a promising route in the development of the next generation of chemical, magnetic and electronic devices. In this work, a layer-by-layer protocol to grow highly ordered thin films of metal-decorated organic-inorganic cage-like polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) is introduced. The key strategy is to use metal ions (Cu²⁺ or Fe³⁺) as linker for the amino-functionalized cage-like POSS, which are self-assembled between arachidic acid layers during Langmuir-Schaefer deposition. The Langmuir-Schaefer films are examined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering and extended X-ray absorption fine structure in order to understand how the coordination of metal ions influences the structure in the course of the layer-by-layer formation of the films.

Insertion of Iron Decorated Organic-Inorganic Cage-Like Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxanes between Clay Platelets by Langmuir Schaefer Deposition

Tuning the architecture of multilayer nanostructures by exploiting the properties of their constituents is a versatile way to develop multifunctional films. Herein, we report a bottom-up approach for the fabrication of highly ordered hybrid films consisting of dimethyldioctadecylammonium (DODA), iron decorated polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS), and montmorillonite clay platelets. Clay platelets provided the template where Fe/POSS moieties were grafted by the use of the surfactant. Driven by the iron ions present, DODA adopted a staggered arrangement, which is essential to realize the controllable layer-by-layer growth of the film. The elemental composition of the film was studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray reflectivity confirmed the existence of smooth interfaces between the different layers.

Adsorption of Uranium (VI) from Aqueous Solutions by Amino-functionalized Clay Minerals

Silylation of clay minerals from Cherkasy deposit (Ukraine) montmorillonite (layer silicate) and palygorskite (fibrous silicate) was performed using organosilane (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES). Solvents with different polarity (ethanol, toluene) were used in synthesis. The structure of modified minerals was characterized by complex of methods (X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption at −196 °C and thermal analysis). Studies of adsorption characteristics of APTES-modified clay minerals were carried out in relation to uranium (VI). The results indicated that modified montmorillonite and palygorskite were effective materials for water purification from UO22+.

Iron-substituted cubic silsesquioxane pillared clays: Synthesis, characterization and acid catalytic activity

Novel pillared structures were developed from the intercalation of iron-substituted cubic silsesquioxanes in a sodium and an acid-activated montmorillonite nanoclay and evaluated as acid catalysts. Octameric cubic oligosiloxanes were formed upon controlled hydrolytic polycondensation of the corresponding monomer (a diamino-alkoxysilane) and reacted with iron cations to form complexes that were intercalated within the layered nanoclay matrices. Upon calcination iron oxide nanoparticles are formed which are located on the silica cubes (pillars) and on the surfaces of the clay platelets. Acid activation of the nanoclay was performed in order to increase the number of acid active sites in the pristine clay and thus increase its catalytic activity. A plethora of analytical techniques including X-ray diffraction, thermal analyses, Fourier transform infrared, electron paramagnetic resonance, Raman, Mössbauer and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies and porosimetry measurements were used in order to follow the synthesis steps and to fully characterize the final catalysts. The resulting pillared clays exhibit a high specific area and show significant acid catalytic activity that was verified using the catalytic dehydration of isopropanol asa probe reaction.

Adsorption of metal ions by clays and inorganic solids

This review deals with adsorption of metal ions, particularly those considered as hazardous, on clays and some inorganic solids and covers the publication years 2000–2013 describing and quantifying the use of isotherms to obtain the adsorption capacities of the solids.

IEP as a parameter characterizing the pH-dependent surface charging of materials other than metal oxides

The numerical values of points of zero charge (PZC, obtained by potentiometric titration) and of isoelectric points (IEP) of various materials reported in the literature have been analyzed. In sets of results reported for the same chemical compound (corresponding to certain chemical formula and crystallographic structure), the IEP are relatively consistent. In contrast, in materials other than metal oxides, the sets of PZC are inconsistent. In view of the inconsistence in the sets of PZC and of the discrepancies between PZC and IEP reported for the same material, it seems that IEP is more suitable than PZC as the unique number characterizing the pH-dependent surface charging of materials other than metal oxides. The present approach is opposite to the usual approach, in which the PZC and IEP are considered as two equally important parameters characterizing the pH-dependent surface charging of materials other than metal oxides.

Mechanism of heavy metal uptake by a hybrid MCM-41 material: surface complexation and EPR spectroscopic study

A novel hybrid MCM-41-based material was synthesized by incorporation of AEDTC [N-(2-aminoethyl)dithiocarbamate] in the MCM-41 pores. The derived MCM-41 x AEDTC material possesses high AEDTC loading 35% [w:w], and a well-defined array of regular mesopores with a specific surface area of 632 m(2)/g. Heavy metal, Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn, uptake was studied in detail at physiological pH values 6-8, by a combination of analytical and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopic techniques. The analytical data show a significant improvement, i.e., 200-500%, for Pb, Cu, and Zn uptake by the MCM-41 x AEDTC hybrid vs the unmodified MCM-41. In contrast, Cd shows an exceptional behavior: (a) Cd uptake by MCM-41 x AEDTC is very low. (b) Competitive metal uptake experiments reveal that Cd ions cause a characteristic inhibition of Cu or Pb uptake by the MCM-41 x AEDTC while Cd binding itself always remained low. The present findings are analyzed by a combination of surface complexation modeling and EPR spectroscopy. Accordingly, in the MCM-41 x AEDTC the sulfur atoms of AEDTC provide strong binding sites for metal binding, with a stoichiometry [S(AEDTC)]:[Metal] = 1:1. Cd inhibits accessibility of Cu or Pb ions in the AEDTC sites.

pH-dependent surface charging and points of zero charge. IV. Update and new approach

The recently published points of zero charge (PZC) and isoelectric points (IEPs) of various materials are compiled to update the previous compilation [M. Kosmulski, Surface Charging and Points of Zero Charge, CRC Press, Boca Raton, FL, 2009]. Unlike in previous compilations by the same author [Chemical Properties of Material Surfaces, Dekker, New York, 2001; J. Colloid Interface Sci. 253 (2002) 77; J. Colloid Interface Sci. 275 (2004) 214; J. Colloid Interface Sci. 298 (2006) 730], the materials are sorted not only by the chemical formula, but also by specific product, that is, by brand name (commercially available materials), and by recipe (home-synthesized materials). This new approach indicated that the relatively consistent PZC/IEP reported in the literature for materials having the same chemical formula are due to biased choice of specimens to be studied. Specimens which have PZC/IEP close to the "recommended" value are selected more often than other specimens (PZC/IEP not reported before or PZC/IEP reported, but different from the "recommended" value). Thus, the previously published PZC/IEP act as a self-fulfilling prophecy.
