Abstract
Highly luminescent quantum dots (QDs) that emit in the visible spectrum are of interest to a number of imaging technologies, not least that of biological samples. One issue that hinders the application of luminescent markers in biology is the potential toxicity of the fluorophore. Here we show that hydrothermally synthesized ZnSe(S) QDs have low cytotoxicity to both human colorectal carcinoma cells (HCT-116) and human skin fibroblast cells (WS1). The QDs exhibited a high degree of crystallinity, with a strong blue photoluminescence at up to 29% quantum yield relative to 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) without post-synthetic UV-irradiation. Confocal microscopy images obtained of HCT-116 cells after incubation with the QDs highlighted the stability of the particles in cell media. Cytotoxicity studies showed that both HCT-116 and WS1 cells retain 100% viability after treatment with the QDs at concentrations up to 0.5g/L, which makes them of potential use in biological imaging applications.

Abstract
Theranostics have received enormous attentions for individualized diagnosis and treatment in the past few years. Especially, the availability of various nanoplatforms provides great potentials for designing of sophisticated theranostic agents including imaging, targeting and therapeutic functions. Numerous reports have been published on how to construct multifunctional nanoparticles for the targeted diagnosis and therapy simultaneously since the concept of "theranostics". This review presents recent advances of molecular imaging and nanoplatform technology, and their applications in drug discovery and development. Applications of nanoplatform-based theranostics in cancer and cardiovascular diseases will also be covered including diagnosis, assessment of drug biodistribution, and visualization of drug release from nanoparticles, as well as monitoring of therapeutic effects.

Abstract
Quantum Dots (QDs) are semiconductor nanocrystals with distinct photophysical properties finding applications in biology, biosensing, and optoelectronics. Polymeric coatings of QDs are used primarily to provide long-term colloidal stability to QDs dispersed in solutions and also as a source of additional functional groups used in further chemical derivatization of the nanoparticles. We review the coating methods, including multidentate and amphiphilic polymeric coatings, and grafting-to and grafting-from approaches. We highlight the most commonly used polymers and discuss how their chemical structure influences the coating properties.

Abstract
Using transmittance electron microscopy, fluorescence and polarizing optical microscopy, optical spectroscopy, and fluorescent correlation spectroscopy, it was shown that CdSe/ZnS quantum dots coated with a specifically designed surfactant were readily dispersed in nematic liquid crystal (LC) to form stable colloids. The mixture of an alkyl phosphonate and a dendritic surfactant, where the constituent molecules contain promesogenic units, enabled the formation of thermodynamically stable colloids that were stable for at least 1 year. Stable colloids are formed due to minimization of the distortion of the LC ordering around the quantum dots.

Abstract
A fundamental and systematic study on the fabrication of a supramolecularly assembled nanostructure of an organic ligand-capped CdS nanocrystal (NC) and multiple heptamine β-cyclodextrin ((NH(2))(7)βCD) molecules in aqueous solution has been here reported. The functionalization process of presynthesized hydrophobic CdS NCs by means of (NH(2))(7)βCD has been extensively investigated by using different spectroscopic and structural techniques, as a function of different experimental parameters, such as the composition and the concentration of CD, the concentration of CdS NCs, the nature of the NC surface capping ligand (oleic acid and octylamine), and the organic solvent. The formation of a complex based on the direct coordination of the (NH(2))(7)βCD amine groups at the NC surface has been demonstrated and found responsible for the CdS NC phase transfer process. The amine functional group in (NH(2))(7)βCD and the appropriate combination of pristine capping agent coordinating the NC surface and a suitable solvent have been found decisive for the success of the CdS NC phase transfer process. Furthermore, a layer-by-layer assembly experiment has indicated that the obtained (NH(2))(7)βCD functionalized CdS NCs are still able to perform the host-guest chemistry. Thus, they offer a model of a nanoparticle-based material with molecular receptors, useful for bio applications.

Abstract
Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are nanometre-scale crystals, which have unique photophysical properties, such as size-dependent optical properties, high fluorescence quantum yields, and excellent stability against photobleaching. These properties enable QDs as the promising optical labels for the biological applications, such as multiplexed analysis of immunocomplexes or DNA hybridization processes, cell sorting and tracing, in vivo imaging and diagnostics in biomedicine. Meanwhile, QDs can be used as labels for the electrochemical detection of DNA or proteins. This article reviews the synthesis and toxicity of QDs and their optical and electrochemical bioanalytical applications. Especially the application of QDs in biomedicine such as delivering, cell targeting and imaging for cancer research, and in vivo photodynamic therapy (PDT) of cancer are briefly discussed.

Abstract
This work is focused on the synthesis and optical properties of cone-shaped structural feature di-dendron polyamidoamine dendrimers up to the third generation with mono-Boc-protected ethylenediamine (EDA) as a core. Strong UV absorbance spectra and fluorescence spectra from di-dendron dendrimers with different terminal groups (-NH(2), -COOCH(3)) were studied under different conditions by varying experimental parameters such as concentration and pH. The optical density and fluorescence intensities increased when di-dendron dendrimers generation number increased from 0.5 to 3.0. It was confirmed that the concentration of di-dendron dendrimers plays an important role in fluorescence intensity. The increase in fluorescence intensity was linear in low concentration regions, but the intensity increased slowly in high concentration regions. The results also showed a rapid increase in fluorescence intensity at low pH. The formation of a fluorescence-emitting moiety had a close relationship to protonated tertiary amine groups in di-dendron dendrimers derived from mono-Boc-protected EDA cores. Furthermore, the formation of fluorescent chemical species was irreversible.
