Structural, textural and adsorption characteristics of nanosilica mechanochemically activated in different media

Factors Affecting Silica/Cellulose Nanocomposite Prepared via the Sol-Gel Technique: A Review

Cellulose/silica nanocomposites, synthesised through the sol-gel technique, have garnered significant attention for their unique properties and diverse applications. The distinctive characteristics of these nanocomposites are influenced by a range of factors, including the cellulose-to-silica ratio, precursor concentration, pH, catalysts, solvent selection, temperature, processing techniques, and agitation. These variables play a pivotal role in determining the nanocomposites' structure, morphology, and mechanical properties, facilitating tailoring for specific applications. Studies by Raabe et al. and Barud et al. demonstrated well-deposited silica nanoparticles within the interstitial spaces of cellulosic fibres, achieved through TEOS precursor hydrolysis and the subsequent condensation of hydroxyl groups on the cellulose fibre surface. The introduction of TEOS established a robust affinity between the inorganic filler and the polymer matrix, emphasising the substantial impact of TEOS concentration on the size and morphology of silica nanoparticles in the final composites. The successful functionalisation of cellulose fibres with the TEOS precursor via the sol-gel method was reported, resulting in reduced water uptake and enhanced mechanical strength due to the strong chemical interaction between silica and cellulose. In research conducted by Feng et al., the silica/cellulose composite exhibited reduced weight loss compared to the pristine cellulose matrix, with the integration of silica leading to an elevated temperature of composite degradation. Additionally, Ahmad et al. investigated the effects of silica addition to cellulose acetate (CA) and polyethylene glycol membranes, noting an increase in Young's modulus, tensile strength, and elongation at break with silica incorporation. However, concentrations exceeding 4% (w/v) resulted in significant phase separations, leading to a decline in mechanical properties.

In situ synthesis of AgI on the nanosilica surface for potential application as a cloud seeding material

A series of nanosilica/AgI composites was synthesized by in situ reactions between silver nitrate and ammonium iodide deposited on the nanosilica surface using the gas-phase solvate-stimulated mechanosorption modification (GSSMSM) under both dry and wet conditions. The characterization of the synthesized materials was performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), SEM/EDX (Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-ray), thermogravimetric (TGA) and gas sorption methods. As a result of the mechanosorption modification of nanosilica, the bulk density of the samples synthesized in the dry and wet medium increases from 45 g/l for initial nanosilica to 249 g/l and 296 g/l for the modified samples, respectively. The specific surface area of the composites decreased in compared to the nanosilica precursor. The SEM data showed a denser aggregate structure of the nanocomposites compared to the initial nanosilica. The XRD, SEM/EDX and TEM/EDX data indicated the formation of AgI clusters. The AgI particle size was in the range of 6-45 nm. The ice-forming activity of the AgI-containing samples was examined as well. The sample with a smaller size of silver iodide on the surface exhibited superior ice-forming properties, and considering the quantity of utilized AgI, the prepared samples hold promise for application in this field.

Nanostructure and thermal characteristics of silica/human serum albumin systems based on a modified nanosilica entero-vulnerosorbent

Entero-vulnerosorbents based on geometrically modified (GM) (mechanical treatment at different times, tMT = 1, 4, and 7 h) fumed nanosilica A300 (NS) and protein molecules (human serum albumin/GM-nanosilica systems) were characterized with a focus on their surface, morphology, topography, and thermal properties. Microscopic, spectroscopic, and analytical techniques, including atomic force microscopy (AFM), optical profilometry (OP), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and elemental analysis (CHN), were used. The differentiation in the surface morphology, micro-nanoroughness, surface chemistry, thermal properties of the silica support, and protein/nanosilica systems were found. AFM, OP, and HRTEM microscopic methods showed that the albumin/silica composite surface is less rough, wavy, and asymmetrical; it is also smoother, flat, and homogeneous because of the formation of a continuous layer of a protein film on the support surface. CHN, XPS, and S/TEM-EDX analysis showed that HSA adsorbed on the unmodified and GM-treated silica carrier led to variations in the physical and chemical features of materials (elemental composition, element concentration, chemical states, chemical bonds between enzyme molecules, and silica surface). Thermal studies were carried out using a thermogravimetric technique linked with a quadrupole mass spectrometer (TG/DTG/DSC-QMS). The degradation of the HSA/nanosilica system is a two-stage process that takes place within the temperature range 160-450-900 °C.

Interfacial phenomena at a surface of individual and complex fumed nanooxides

Investigations of interfacial and temperature behaviors of nonpolar and polar adsorbates interacting with individual and complex fumed metal or metalloid oxides (FMO), initial and subjected to various treatments or chemical functionalization and compared to such porous adsorbents as silica gels, precipitated silica, mesoporous ordered silicas, filled polymeric composites, were analyzed. Complex nanooxides include core-shell nanoparticles, CSNP (50-200nm in size) with titania or alumina cores and silica or alumina shells in contrast to simple and smaller nanoparticles of individual FMO. CSNP could be destroyed under high-pressure cryogelation (HPCG) or mechanochemical activation (MCA). These treatments affect the structure of aggregates of nanoparticles and agglomerates of aggregates, resulting in their becoming more compacted. The analysis shows that complex FMO could be more sensitive to external actions than simple nanooxides such as fumed silica. Any treatment of 'soft' FMO affects the interfacial and temperature behaviors of polar and nonpolar adsorbates. Rearrangement of secondary particles and surface functionalization affects the freezing-melting point depression of adsorbates. For some adsorbates, open hysteresis loops became readily apparent in adsorption-desorption isotherms. Clustering of adsorbates bound in textural pores in aggregates of nanoparticles (i.e., voids between nanoparticles in secondary structures) causes reduced changes in enthalpy during phase transitions (freezing, fusion, evaporation). Freezing point depression and melting point elevation cause significant hysteresis freezing-melting effects for adsorbates bound to FMO in the textural pores. Relaxation phenomena for both low- and high-molecular weight adsorbates or filled polymeric composites are affected by the morphology of primary particles, structural organization of secondary particles of differently treated or functionalized FMO, content of adsorbates, co-adsorption order, and temperature.

Hallmarks of mechanochemistry: from nanoparticles to technology

The aim of this review article on recent developments of mechanochemistry (nowadays established as a part of chemistry) is to provide a comprehensive overview of advances achieved in the field of atomistic processes, phase transformations, simple and multicomponent nanosystems and peculiarities of mechanochemical reactions. Industrial aspects with successful penetration into fields like materials engineering, heterogeneous catalysis and extractive metallurgy are also reviewed. The hallmarks of mechanochemistry include influencing reactivity of solids by the presence of solid-state defects, interphases and relaxation phenomena, enabling processes to take place under non-equilibrium conditions, creating a well-crystallized core of nanoparticles with disordered near-surface shell regions and performing simple dry time-convenient one-step syntheses. Underlying these hallmarks are technological consequences like preparing new nanomaterials with the desired properties or producing these materials in a reproducible way with high yield and under simple and easy operating conditions. The last but not least hallmark is enabling work under environmentally friendly and essentially waste-free conditions (822 references).

Interfacial behavior of n-decane bound to weakly hydrated silica gel and nanosilica over a broad temperature range

The interfacial and temperature behavior of n-decane bound to weakly hydrated nanosilica A-400 (initial, heated, or compacted) or silica gel Si-60 was studied using low-temperature (1)H NMR spectroscopy applied to static samples that allowed us to observe signals only of mobile decane and unfrozen water molecules. For deeper insight into the phenomena studied, interactions of n-decane, 1-decanol, and water with a set of nanosilicas and silica gels were analyzed using DSC and thermoporometry. Both NMR and DSC results demonstrated that during heating of frozen samples at a heating rate of 5 K/min a portion of decane or decanol remained frozen at temperature higher than the freezing point of bulk liquid (Tf). For decane and decanol adsorbed onto silica gels Si-40, Si-60, and Si-100, the number, position, and intensity of freezing and melting peaks observed in the DSC thermograms over the 170-300 K range during cooling and heating of samples depended on the pore size distribution of silicas as well as on the amounts and type of adsorbates. The position of the main freezing peak of decane for all samples was close to Tf because the alkane amount was greater than the pore volume; i.e., a fraction of decane was bulk liquid. According to (1)H NMR data, a portion of decane, which was in a quasi-crystalline solid state characterized by fast molecular exchange (i.e., short transverse relaxation time) and not observed in the spectra, was greater than a portion of decane frozen at temperatures close to Tf during cooling that appears in the DSC endotherms of heated samples.

Silica colloid formation enhances performance of sediment microbial fuel cells in a low conductivity soil

The performance of sediment microbial fuel cells (SMFCs) is usually limited by the structure, moisture, and salt content of the soil where they are allocated. Despite the influence of soil, so far most of efforts to improve SMFCs have been limited to the hardware design of the bioelectrochemical device. Our main objective was to enhance performance of SMFCs by stimulating the in situ formation of silica colloids in a low conductivity rice paddy soil. Our results have revealed that the presence of a silica colloid network, described by cryo-SEM analysis, reduced soil resistivity, enhanced ion mobility and consequently enhanced the power production by a factor of 10. Furthermore, our silica-supplemented soil showed better utilization of the electron donor, either acetate or natural rice root exudates, by electrogenic microbial populations. Sustainable manipulation of soil micromorphology using environmentally friendly reagents such as silica offers a novel approach for enhancing the performance of in situ microbial electrochemical applications in low conductivity soils, thus silica colloid geoengineering should be considered as part of future applications of SMFCs.
