Abstract
Alternating sequencing of styrene-maleimide/maleic anhydride (S-MI/MA) in the copolymer chain is known for a long time. But since early 2000, this class of copolymers has been extensively studied using various living/controlled polymerization techniques to design S-MI/MA alternating copolymers with tunable molecular weight, narrow dispersity (Ð), and precise chain-end functionality. The widespread diverse applications of this polymeric backbone are due to its ease of synthesis, cheap starting materials, high precision in alternating sequencing, and facile post-polymerization functionalization with simple organic reactions. Recently, S-MI/MA alternating copolymers have been rediscovered as novel polymers with unprecedented emissive behavior. It outperforms the traditional fluorophores with no aggregation caused quenching (ACQ), aqueous solubility, and greater cell viability. Herein, the origin of alternating sequence, synthesis, and recent (2010-Present) developments in applications of these polymers in different fields are elaborately discussed, including the advantages of the unconventional luminogenic property. This review article also highlights the future research directions of the versatile S-MI/MA copolymers.

Abstract
Surfaces that have superhydrophilic characteristics are known to exhibit extreme oil repellency under water, which is attractive for applications including anti-fogging, water-oil separations, and self-cleaning. However, superhydrophilic surfaces can also be easily fouled and lose their extreme oil repellency, which limits their usage in practical applications. In this work, we create an anti-oil fouling coating by spray coating poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)-grafted SiO2 nanochains (approximately 45 nm wide and 300 nm long) onto solid surfaces, forming a nanoporous film exhibiting superhydrophilicity (water contact angle in air ≈ 0°) and underwater superoleophobicity (dichloroethane contact angle ≥ 165°). The polymer-grafted nanochain assemblies exhibit extremely low contact angle hysteresis (<1°) and small adhesion hysteresis (-0.05 mN m-1), and thus, oil can readily roll off from the surface when the coating is immersed in water. Compared to other superhydrophilic surfaces, we show that both the unique structure of spray-assembled nanochains and the hygroscopic nature of PAA are essential to enable ultrastable anti-oil fouling. Even after the PAA-grafted nanochain coating is purposely fouled by oil, oil can be readily and completely expelled and lifted-off from the coating within 10 s when placed under water. Further, we show that our coating retains underwater superoleophobicity even after being subjected to shearing under water for more than 168 h. Our approach offers a simple yet versatile method to create an ultrastable superhydrophilic and anti-oil fouling coating via a scalable manufacturing method.

Abstract
Hydration is central to mitigating surface fouling by oil and microorganisms. Immobilization of hydrophilic polymers on surfaces promotes retention of water and a reduction of direct interactions with potential foulants. While conventional surface modification techniques are surface-specific, mussel-inspired adhesives based on dopamine effectively coat many types of surfaces and thus hold potential as a universal solution to surface modification. Here, we describe a facile, one-step surface modification strategy that affords hydrophilic, and underwater superoleophobic, coatings by the simultaneous deposition of polydopamine (PDA) with poly(methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) (polyMPC). The resultant composite coating features enhanced hydrophilicity (i.e., water contact angle of ~10° in air) and antifouling performance relative to PDA coatings. PolyMPC affords control over coating thickness and surface roughness, and results in a nearly 10 fold reduction in Escherichia coli adhesion relative to unmodified glass. The substrate-independent nature of PDA coatings further promotes facile surface modification without tedious surface pretreatment, and offers a robust template for codepositing polyMPC to enhance biocompatibility, hydrophilicity and fouling resistance.

Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to a number of diseases and adverse outcomes including: osteoporosis, infections, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and even cancer. At present the vast majority of vitamin D testing is performed in large-scale laboratories at the request of a physician as part of an annual panel of blood tests. Here we present a system for rapid quantification of vitamin D levels on a smartphone. The system consists of a smartphone accessory, an app, and a test strip that allows the colorimetric detection of 25-hydroxyvitamin D using a novel gold nanoparticle-based immunoassay. We show that the system can be used to accurately measure physiological levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D with accuracy better than 15 nM and a precision of 10 nM. We compare our system with well-established ELISA test kits for serum samples of unknown concentration and demonstrate equivalency of the results. We envision this as the first step towards the development of the NutriPhone, a comprehensive system for the analysis of multiple vitamins and micronutrients on a smartphone.

Abstract
Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) has drawn much attention as a predominant ultrafiltration (UF) membrane material due to its outstanding mechanical and physicochemical properties. However, current applications suffer from the low fouling resistance of the PVDF membrane due to the intrinsic hydrophobic property of the membrane. The present study demonstrates a novel approach for the fabrication of a highly hydrophilic PVDF UF membrane via postfabrication tethering of superhydrophilic silica nanoparticles (NPs) to the membrane surface. The pristine PVDF membrane was grafted with poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) by plasma induced graft copolymerization, providing sufficient carboxyl groups as anchor sites for the binding of silica NPs, which were surface-tailored with amine-terminated cationic ligands. The NP binding was achieved through a remarkably simple and effective dip-coating technique in the presence or absence of the N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-N'-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC)/N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) cross-linking process. The properties of the membrane prepared from the modification without EDC/NHS cross-linking were comparable to those for the membrane prepared with the EDC/NHS cross-linking. Both modifications almost doubled the surface energy of the functionalized membranes, which significantly improved the wettability of the membrane and converted the membrane surface from hydrophobic to highly hydrophilic. The irreversibly bound layer of superhydrophilic silica NPs endowed the membranes with strong antifouling performance as demonstrated by three sequential fouling filtration runs using bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a model organic foulant. The results suggest promising applications of the postfabrication surface modification technique in various membrane separation areas.
