Synthesis and Evaluation of Gelatin-Chitosan Biofilms Incorporating Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles and 5-Fluorouracil for Cancer Treatment

In this study, a novel multifunctional biofilm was fabricated using a straightforward casting process. The biofilm comprised gelatin, chitosan, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)-conjugated zinc oxide nanoparticles, and polyvinyl alcohol plasticized with glycerol. The 5-FU-conjugated nanoparticles were synthesized via a single-step co-precipitation process, offering a unique approach. Characterization confirmed successful drug conjugation, revealing bar-shaped nanoparticles with sizes ranging from 90 to 100 nm. Drug release kinetics followed the Korsmeyer-Peppas model, indicating controlled release behavior. Maximum swelling ratio studies of the gelatin-chitosan film showed pH-dependent characteristics, highlighting its versatility. Comprehensive analysis using SEM, FT-IR, Raman, and EDX spectra confirmed the presence of gelatin, chitosan, and 5-FU/ZnO nanoparticles within the biofilms. These biofilms exhibited non-cytotoxicity to human fibroblasts and significant anticancer activity against skin cancer cells, demonstrating their potential for biomedical applications. This versatility positions the 5-FU/ZnO-loaded sheets as promising candidates for localized topical patches in skin and oral cancer treatment, underscoring their practicality and adaptability for therapeutic applications.

A Comparative Study of Cr(VI) Sorption by Aureobasidium pullulans AKW Biomass and Its Extracellular Melanin: Complementary Modeling with Equilibrium Isotherms, Kinetic Studies, and Decision Tree Modeling

Melanin as a natural polymer is found in all living organisms, and plays an important role in protecting the body from harmful UV rays from the sun. The efficiency of fungal biomass (Aureobasidium pullulans) and its extracellular melanin as Cr(VI) biosorbents was comparatively considered. The efficiency of Cr(VI) biosorption by the two sorbents used was augmented up to 240 min. The maximum sorption capacities were 485.747 (fungus biomass) and 595.974 (melanin) mg/g. The practical data were merely fitted to both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The kinetics of the biosorption process obeyed the pseudo-first-order. Melanin was superior in Cr(VI) sorption than fungal biomass. Furthermore, four independent variables (contact time, initial concentration of Cr(VI), biosorbent dosage, and pH,) were modeled by the two decision trees (DTs). Conversely, to equilibrium isotherms and kinetic studies, DT of fungal biomass had lower errors compared to DT of melanin. Lately, the DTs improved the efficacy of the Cr(VI) removal process, thus introducing complementary and alternative solutions to equilibrium isotherms and kinetic studies. The Cr(VI) biosorption onto the biosorbents was confirmed and elucidated through FTIR, SEM, and EDX investigations. Conclusively, this is the first report study attaining the biosorption of Cr(VI) by biomass of A. pullulans and its extracellular melanin among equilibrium isotherms, kinetic study, and algorithmic decision tree modeling.

Enhanced Adsorption Performance Cross-Linked Chitosan/Citrus reticulata Peel Waste Composites as Low-Cost and Green Bio-Adsorbents: Kinetic, Equilibrium Isotherm, and Thermodynamic Studies

This study revealed the synthesis of cross-linked chitosan/Citrus reticulata peel waste (C/CRPW) composites that could be used as low-cost and green bio-adsorbents for the removal of Congo red (CR) dye from aqueous solutions. C/CRPW composites containing different amounts of Citrus reticulata peel waste (CRPW) and chitosan were prepared and cross-linked with glutaraldehyde. The composites were characterized by FESEM, EDS, FTIR, XRD, BET, and zeta potential measurements. The C/CRPW composites as a new type of bio-adsorbents displayed superior adsorption capability toward anionic CR molecules, and the adsorption capacities increased with the incorporation of CRPW. Effects of different ambient conditions, such as contact time, pH, adsorbent dosage, initial adsorbate concentration, and temperature, were fully studied. The conditions which obtained 43.57 mg/g of the highest adsorption capacity were conducted at pH 4 with an initial concentration of 100 mg/L, adsorbent dosage of 2.0 g/L, and contact time of 24 h at 328 K. The adsorption data was found to follow the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich isotherm model. According to the findings of this investigation, it was observed that the C/CRWP composites could be used as adsorbents due to their advantages, including the simple preparation process, being environmentally friendly, renewable, efficient, and low-cost.

Preparation of sisal fiber/polyaniline/bio-surfactant rhamnolipid-layered double hydroxide nanocomposite for water decolorization: kinetic, equilibrium, and thermodynamic studies

Sisal fiber is a potent economical biomaterial for designing composites because of its low density, high specific strength, no toxic effects, and renewability. The present study utilized sisal fiber as a starting material and subjected it to modification to produce a sisal fiber/polyaniline/bio-surfactant rhamnolipid-layered double hydroxide nanocomposite material denoted as SF@PANI@LDH@RL. The composite was evaluated for its efficacy in removing reactive orange 16 (RO16) and methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions. The synthesized adsorbent was characterized by FTIR, XRD, and SEM-EDS techniques; these analyses indicated the successful modification of the sisal fiber. The primary factors, including contact time, adsorbent dosage, dye concentration, temperature, and pH, were optimized for achieving the most excellent adsorption efficiency. On the one hand, methylene blue removal is enhanced in the basic solution (pH = 10). On the other hand, reactive orange 16 adsorption was favored in the acidic solution (pH = 3). The highest adsorption capacities for methylene blue and reactive orange 16 were 24.813 and 23.981 mg/g at 318 K, respectively. The Temkin isotherm model, which proves the adsorption procedure of methylene blue and reactive orange 16 could be regarded as a chemisorption procedure, supplies the most suitable explanation for the adsorption of methylene blue (R² = 0.983) and reactive orange 16 (R² = 0.996). Furthermore, Elovich is the best-fitting kinetic model for both dyes (R² = 0.986 for MB and R² = 0.987 for RO16). The recommended SF@PANI@LDH@RL adsorbent was reused six consecutive times and showed stable adsorption performance. The results demonstrate that SF@PANI@LDH@RL is a perfect adsorbent for eliminating cationic and anionic organic dyes from aqueous media.

Bioreduction performance of Cr(VI) by microbial extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and the overlooked role of tryptophan

Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) have exhibited promising advantages in mitigating heavy metal contamination, e.g., single-valent silver (Ag(I)), trivalent gold (Au(III)), and hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). However, knowledge of the specific substrate in EPSs that supports Cr(VI) reduction has remained elusive. Here, we isolated a novel Cr(VI)-reducing strain with self-mediating properties in an aquatic environment with various pH values to investigate the mechanisms. After analysis by a batch assay coupled with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS) spectroscopic techniques, it was found that Cr(VI) was reduced by the strain and soluble-EPS (S-EPS), and then, organo-trivalent chromium (organo-Cr(III)) was successfully formed. In addition, compared with other components of the strain, the strain and S-EPS completely removed Cr(VI), and the S-EPS exhibited a positive effect on Cr(VI) reduction with a strong monotonic correlation (R² = 0.999, p = 9.03 × 10^-5), indicating that the reduction is an EPS-dependent process. Specifically, the Cr(VI) reduction efficiency was enhanced to 48.85% and 99.4% after EPS and EPS plus tryptophan were added; their respective efficiencies were 3.94 and 8.02 times higher than that of the control assay in which the reductant was depleted. High-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) analysis showed that the tryptophan concentration concomitantly decreased by 61.54%. These findings highlighted the importance of S-EPS and tryptophan and improved our understanding of EPS for Cr(VI) reduction, which might provide a novel strategy for decontaminating targeted heavy metals in future applications.

Carboxylate-functionalized sugarcane bagasse as an effective and renewable adsorbent to remove methylene blue

This study prepared a carboxylate-functionalized sugarcane bagasse (CF-SCB) from sugarcane bagasse (SCB) via a simple and low-toxicity chemical modification to enhance its capacity for adsorbing methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions. The success of chemical modification was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), the pore area and porosity, and zeta potential measurement analysis. The adsorption capacity of CF-SCB was investigated at different pHs, ionic strengths, temperatures, contact times and initial dye concentrations. Equilibrium data were best described by the Langmuir isotherm model, and the maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of CF-SCB (296.74 mg g^-1) was greatly improved compared with SCB (77.16 mg g^-1) at 30 °C. The thermodynamic study indicated that MB adsorption onto CF-SCB was a spontaneous, endothermic and entropy increased process. Adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second-order mode, and the adsorption mechanism was based on electrostatic interactions. The reusability study showed that CF-SCB had reasonably good reuse potential. All the results suggested that CF-SCB has high potential to be used as an effective and renewable adsorbent for MB removal from wastewater.

Polyethylenimine facilitated ethyl cellulose for hexavalent chromium removal with a wide pH range

Ethyl cellulose (EC) composites modified with 20.0 wt % polyethylenimine (PEI) (PEI/ECs) demonstrated effective hexavalent chromium, [Cr(VI)], removal from solutions with a wide pH range. For example, 4.0 mg/L Cr(VI) solution with a pH below 3.0 was completely purified by 3.0 g/L PEI/ECs within 5 min, much faster than the as-received EC (2 h) and activated carbon (several hours). These PEI/ECs adsorbents has overcome the low pH limitation of Cr(VI) removal; for example, 4.0 mg/L Cr(VI) solution with a pH of 11.0 was completely purified within 15 min. These adsorbents followed chemical adsorption as revealed from the pseudo-second-order kinetic study. These PEI/ECs following the isotherm Langmuir model have a maximum adsorption capacity of 36.8 mg/g, much higher than pure EC (12 mg/g), tetrabutylammonium-modified celluloses (16.67 mg/g), and magnetic carbon (16 mg/g). The reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) by the oxidation of amine groups and hydroxyl groups of PEI/ECs was verified as the main mechanism for the Cr(VI) removal.
