Abstract
The use of plate-like materials to induce a percolation gel-like effect in electrorheological (ER) fluids is sparsely documented. Hence, we dispersed plate-like materials, namely natural mica, synthetic mica, and glass, as well as their pulverized particles, in various concentrations in silicone oil to form ER fluids. Subsequently, the rheological properties of the fluids were evaluated and compared to identify the threshold concentration for percolating a gel-like state. The shear stress and viscoelastic moduli under zero-field conditions confirmed that plate-like materials can be used to induce percolation gel-like effects in ER fluids. This is because of the high aspect ratio of the materials, which enhances their physical stability. In practical ER investigations, ER fluids based on synthetic mica (30.0 wt%) showed the highest yield stress of 516.2 Pa under an electric field strength of 3.0 kV mm-1. This was attributed to the formation of large-cluster networks and additional polarization induced by the ions. This study provides a practical approach for developing a new type of gel-like ER fluid.

Abstract
Nonspherical polymer particles (NPPs) are nano/micro-particulates of macromolecules that are anisotropic in shape, and can be designed anisotropic in chemistry. Due to shape and surface anisotropies, NPPs bear many unique structures and fascinating properties which are distinctly different from those of spherical polymer particles (SPPs). In recent years, the research on NPPs has surprisingly blossomed in recent years, and many practical materials based on NPPs with potential applications in photonic device, material science and biomedical engineering have been generated. In this review, we give a systematic, balanced and comprehensive summary of the main aspects of NPPs related to their preparation and application, and propose perspectives for the future developments of NPPs.

Abstract
Electrorheological (ER) fluids are considered as a type of smart fluids because their rheological characteristics can be altered through an electric field. The discovery of giant ER effect revived the researchers' interest in the ER technological area. However, the poor stability including the insufficient dynamic shear stress, the large leakage current density, and the sedimentation tendency still hinders their practical applications. Herein, we report a facile and scalable coprecipitation method for synthesizing surfactant-free tin titanyl oxalate (TTO) particles with tremella-like wrinkly microstructure (W-TTO). The W-TTO-based ER fluids exhibit enhanced ER activity compared to that of the pristine TTO because of the improved wettability between W-TTO and the silicone oil. In addition, the static yield stress and leakage current of W-TTO ER fluids also show a fine time stability during the 30 day tests. More importantly, the dynamic shear stress of W-TTO ER fluids can remain stable throughout the shear rate range, which is valuable for their use in engineering applications. The results in this work provided a promising strategy to solving the long-standing problem of ER fluid stability. Moreover, this convenient route of synthesis may be considered a green approach for the mass production of giant ER materials.

Abstract
Seeded emulsion polymerization is by far the most successful synthetic method for making anisotropic particles with precise control and high throughput. However, this synthesis involves multiple steps and the types of anisotropic properties that have been made on particles are limited. Here, we demonstrate, by using two different types of nonpolymerizable swelling agents, that we can simplify this method while still producing colloidal dimers with combined anisotropic properties in geometry, interface, and composition. When we swell cross-linked polystyrene seed particles with a simple solvent toluene, without additional polymerization steps we can make dimers with asymmetric distribution of surface charges and roughness on two lobes by fast extraction of toluene. We further show that this toluene-swelling-extraction method can promote the surface modification of the second lobe selectively especially for hydrophilic and stimuli-responsive polymers, which was a significant challenge in dimer synthesis. When we change the swelling agent to a sol-gel precursor, that is, tetraethyl orthosilicate, we can make polystyrene-silica hybrid particles with different morphologies. Our method provides a facile synthetic platform for making colloidal particles with different types of anisotropic properties, which are expected to find important applications for colloidal surfactant, self-assembly, and artificial motors.

Abstract
Monodisperse core-shell-structured poly(styrene-co-butyl acrylate-co-[2-(methacryloxy)ethyl] trimethylammonium chloride)/silica (PSBM/SiO2) nanoparticles were applied as new electrorheological (ER) materials in which the particles were dispersed in an insulating oil. These nanoparticles were prepared by the consecutive precipitation of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and negatively charged tetraethylorthosilicate onto the cationic surfaces of PSBM colloidal particles. The successful deposition of the shell phase of the particles and their morphology was examined by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. Their ER properties were studied with a rotational rheometer under different shear modes: controlled shear rate, steady shear under constant shear rate, and creep test. The silica shell allowed the PSBM/SiO2 particles to exhibit typical ER performance under an applied electric field. The dielectric spectra of the PSBM/SiO2-based ER fluid were also recorded using an LCR meter, which was correlated to the ER performance of the ER fluid.

Abstract
Polystyrene (PS)/laponite composite nanoparticles were fabricated using a surfactant-free Pickering emulsion polymerization method, in which emulsions of styrene dispersed in water were stabilized by hydrophilic laponite modified with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide. The PS/laponite nanoparticles, of which their surface was covered compactly by laponite clay platelets, were observed by scanning electron microscopy. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis confirmed their chemical composition, crystallographic structure, and thermal properties and weight loss percentage of the laponite located on the surface of the PS particle, respectively. When an external electrical field was applied, the chain-like structure of the laponite coated nano-sized PS particle exhibiting electrorheological characteristics was observed by optical microscopy. The electrorheological performance of the bulk properties was also examined using a rotational rheometer equipped with a high voltage generator.

Abstract
Novel polarizable graphene oxide (GO) particles with oxidized groups on their edge and basal planes were prepared by a modified Hummers method, and their electro-responsive electrorheological (ER) characteristics when dispersed in silicone oil were examined with and without an electric field applied. The fibrillation phenomenon of this GO-based electro-responsive fluid was also observed via an optical microscope under an applied electric field. Both flow curves and dielectric spectra of the ER fluid were measured using a rotational rheometer and a LCR meter, respectively. Its viscoelastic properties of both storage and loss moduli were also examined using a vertical oscillation rheometer equipped with a high voltage generator, finding that the GO-based smart ER system behaves as a viscoelastic material under an applied electric field.
